What Sherpa’s Customers are Saying

I contacted Sherpa and they were super helpful and fast. The day before, I was informed that someone had picked my truck up. And then early that morning, I was contacted by the individual that had it, and told about when he would be in town. It was easy as far as him showing up to our house and unloading. That gentleman was friendly and excellent to work with. He took exactly what Sherpa told me it would be required for me to pay him. All around an excellent experience. I would 100% recommend Sherpa to anyone.

I picked three different carriers. I chose another carrier. I was advised I needed to get insurance which was added to the balance. I was contacted and informed they have a driver, however the driver wanted more money…$300 more. I politely said, no thanks and immediately contacted Sherpa, which I should have done in first place. No hidden fees. Polite and professional. A company of their word. The driver was Gungaa with MGI Express, Inc. smooth transition, worry free. I got my car in three and a half days. Will use again!!!

KEY FACTORS

Factors that Affect Fargo, ND Shipping Prices

Distance

Distance plays a major role in your shipping costs. The further your car travels, the more you’ll pay. Shipping from Fargo to nearby Minneapolis will cost less than shipping to Los Angeles or Miami. However, longer routes often have better per-mile rates, so cross-country shipments aren’t always as expensive as you might think.

Route

Fargo sits along Interstate 29 and Interstate 94, which is great news for your wallet. Major highways mean more carriers travel these routes regularly, keeping costs down. If you’re shipping to or from a remote area off the main highways, expect to pay more since carriers have to make special detours.

Season

Winter in Fargo can affect shipping costs and availability. Many people move south during the cold months, increasing demand for routes heading to warmer states. Summer and fall are typically less expensive times to ship. Spring can also see price increases as college students and snowbirds return north.

Vehicle Type

The size and weight of your vehicle directly impacts cost. Sedans and compact cars are the cheapest to ship. SUVs, trucks, and larger vehicles cost more because they’re heavier (burning more fuel) and take up more space on the carrier. Some oversized trucks may require special equipment, adding to the expense.

Traffic Patterns

Timing matters when shipping your car. Avoid peak travel times like the week before Thanksgiving, Christmas, and major holidays when roads are congested. These busy periods slow down carriers and can increase costs. Shipping during quieter weeks means faster delivery and often better rates.

Carrier Availability

Fargo’s location means carrier availability varies by season. During peak summer months and winter migration periods, you may wait 1-2 weeks for a carrier. In the off-season (spring and fall), carriers are usually available within a few days. Booking early gives you more options and better prices.

Open vs Enclosed

Open trailers are the most affordable option and work perfectly for most vehicles. They’re exposed to weather but are safe and reliable. Enclosed trailers cost 40-60% more but protect your car from the elements—ideal for luxury vehicles, classics, or if you’re shipping during harsh North Dakota winters.

Population Density

Fargo’s manageable size works in your favor. Unlike dense cities where carriers struggle with tight streets and parking, Fargo offers easier access for large car carriers. If you’re shipping to a major metro area like New York or Chicago, consider having your car delivered to a suburban location with better truck access to save money.

TIPS & TRICKS

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

Off Season Savings

Timing matters when shipping your vehicle. Off-season transport costs significantly less than peak periods. Even shifting your shipment by a few weeks can reduce rates, especially during busy times like snowbird season when demand spikes and prices rise accordingly.

Flexible Pickup & Delivery

Flexible scheduling saves money on car shipping. Carriers offer discounts when you provide a five-day window for pickup and delivery instead of exact dates. This flexibility allows them to optimize routes and pass savings directly to you through lower rates.

Hub City Advantages

Location choice impacts your shipping costs. Select pickup points near major highways in Fargo for better rates and more carrier options. Shipping to rural areas? Consider meeting your carrier in a nearby hub city along main routes to reduce expenses.

Open Trailers

Open trailers cost less than enclosed options. Most standard vehicles ship safely on open carriers, making them the budget-friendly choice. Reserve enclosed trailers for luxury, classic, or high-end vehicles that need extra protection from weather and road debris.

INSIGHTS & REGULATIONS

Fargo, ND Car Transport: State Insights and Regulations

Auto transport truck carrying vehicles

When planning car shipping to Fargo, ND, understanding North Dakota’s vehicle requirements helps ensure a smooth transition. New residents must register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency [NDDOT]. North Dakota does not require emissions testing, making auto transport and registration simpler than many states [NDDOT]. However, the state enforces specific regulations: window tinting must allow more than 70% light transmission on front side windows, and windshield tinting is prohibited except for the top five inches [NDDOT].

Fargo’s harsh winters make vehicle preparation essential after auto transport. Winter tires are highly recommended from November through March, when temperatures regularly drop below zero [NWS]. Consider having your car shipping company deliver before winter to allow time for cold-weather modifications like engine block heaters and battery warmers. North Dakota requires minimum liability insurance of 25/50/25 ($25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, $25,000 property damage) [NDDOI]. The state also follows a no-fault insurance system, requiring Personal Injury Protection coverage, which differs from many states [NDDOI]. Most off-campus apartments include parking, but verify this before signing a lease. We recommend scheduling your car shipment from Fargo, ND at least 1-2 weeks in advance. However, booking earlier gives you the best results.

Here’s why advance notice matters:

  • Better carrier availability: Fargo’s location means fewer carriers pass through compared to major metro areas. More lead time helps us find the right carrier for your route.
  • Lower costs: Carriers can bundle your vehicle with other shipments heading the same direction, which often reduces your price.
  • Flexible scheduling: You’ll have more pickup date options to choose from.

Need faster service? We can often arrange expedited pickup within 2-5 days, though this may cost more and limit your carrier options.

For the smoothest experience, book as soon as you know your moving dates. This is especially important during peak seasons (summer and end of month) when demand is highest.

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

Open auto transport is the most common and affordable option, where your vehicle is shipped on an open-air trailer alongside other cars. It’s exposed to weather and road elements, but it’s perfectly safe for most vehicles and costs significantly less.

Enclosed auto transport protects your vehicle inside a covered trailer, shielding it from weather, dust, and debris. This option typically costs 50-60% more than open transport.

Which should you choose? Most Fargo residents choose open transport—it’s reliable, cost-effective, and used for about 90% of all car shipments. Consider enclosed transport if you’re shipping a luxury car, classic vehicle, exotic sports car, or any vehicle with custom modifications worth protecting.
