TESTIMONIALS

What Sherpa’s Customers are Saying

I’m in the military and I had to change duty stations, so I needed to ship my car from Washington to Maryland. I went with Sherpa Auto Transport because their reviews were good and their price was more reasonable. The rep, Tim, was perfect and I loved him. I enjoyed the flex quote provided by Sherpa. The original quote I received was very accurate and it was exactly what happened after the completion of the transport. The final cost in relation to the quality of service that I got was perfect. Sherpa has reasonable prices and they would probably even give you better service.

This was my first time shipping a vehicle and I chose Sherpa as my broker, and everything went great! They chose West Coast Auto Transport for shipping my car from Washington State to Maryland, and their drivers were so kind and professional. They picked up my car on the first day of the pickup window, and the driver for delivery was very communicative about arrival and it truly was door-to-door service! I will absolutely use Sherpa again for any future car shipping needs.

I would definitely recommend Sherpa Auto Transport. They shipped the 2006 Toyota Camry from Washington state to Maryland. I called another broker and they changed the price on me three times, so I canceled with that one. After giving me the initial quote, Sherpa didn’t change the price on me. Also, their price was cheaper and there was a $200 difference in their quote compared to other transport companies. I had a very good experience with the driver. He was very accommodating, and Sherpa was able to get my car delivered on time despite the weather.

KEY FACTORS

Factors that Affect Maryland to Washington Shipping Prices

Distance

Maryland to Washington is a short trip — roughly 40 miles. That keeps shipping costs low compared to cross-country routes. Less distance means less fuel, less driver time, and a lower overall price.

Route

This route runs along major corridors like I-95 and US-50, making it carrier-friendly. Well-traveled highways attract more drivers, which increases competition and helps keep your shipping costs down.

Season

Summer and holiday seasons drive up demand for car shipping. More people are relocating or traveling, so prices rise. Shipping in late fall or winter — outside peak times — can save you real money.

Vehicle Type

Shipping a standard sedan is always cheaper than shipping an SUV or truck. Larger vehicles take up more trailer space, weigh more, and burn more fuel. Some carriers can’t accommodate oversized trucks at all.

Traffic Considerations

The DC-Maryland corridor gets extremely congested around holidays, especially Thanksgiving week. Heavy traffic slows carriers down and raises costs. Book your shipment during lighter traffic windows to avoid delays and potential price increases.

Carrier Availability

This is a short, high-demand route, so carriers are generally available. However, during peak moving season — typically May through August — availability tightens. Book early to lock in better rates and avoid waiting.

Open vs Enclosed

Open transport is the most affordable option and works well for standard vehicles on this short route. If you’re shipping a luxury or classic car, enclosed transport offers extra protection, though it does cost more.

Population Density

Washington DC is a dense, busy city with tight streets and strict traffic rules. Deliveries into the city core cost more than drop-offs in suburbs like Bethesda or Silver Spring. Consider meeting your carrier just outside the city to save money.

TIPS & TRICKS

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

Off Season Savings

Shipping during the off-season can lower your costs significantly. Even shifting your schedule by a few weeks outside peak seasons, like snowbird season, can lead to noticeable savings on your Maryland to Washington shipment.

Flexible Pickup & Delivery

Offering a five-day window for pickup and delivery gives carriers more scheduling options. This flexibility often translates to lower rates, making it one of the easiest ways to save on your shipment.

Hub City Advantages

Choosing a pickup or drop-off location near major highways in Maryland or Washington increases your carrier options. More competition among carriers means better rates, especially compared to shipping to or from a rural area.

Open Trailers

Open trailers cost less than enclosed ones and work well for most standard vehicles. If you’re shipping a luxury or classic car, an enclosed trailer offers extra protection but will come at a higher price.

HOW IT WORKS

How does Car Shipping from Maryland to Washington Work?

Picturesque view of Washington

Maryland to Washington car shipping is a straightforward process when you work with the right auto transport provider. Sherpa Auto Transport makes it easy by connecting you with vetted, reliable carriers who specialize in this cross-country route. The process begins with a free quote, where you’ll provide details about your vehicle, your preferred pickup and delivery locations, and your ideal shipping dates. Once you book, a licensed carrier is assigned to your shipment, and your car is picked up directly from your home, office, or another convenient location in Maryland.

Shipping a car from Maryland to Washington covers an average distance of approximately 2,728 miles, making this a long-distance auto transport route. Because of this, choosing an open or enclosed carrier matters. Open transport is the most affordable option and works well for standard vehicles. Enclosed transport offers extra protection and is ideal for luxury, classic, or high-value cars. Pricing for Maryland to Washington car shipping typically ranges from $1,275 to $2,150, depending on your vehicle type, transport method, and seasonal demand.

One key consideration for this route is timing. Since Maryland and Washington sit on opposite coasts, carrier availability and weather conditions along the route can affect scheduling. The good news is that this is a well-traveled auto transport corridor, meaning carriers run it regularly. You can expect your vehicle to arrive within 4 to 9 days after pickup. Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise also ensures the quote you receive is the price you pay — no surprise fees at delivery.

Before your car is loaded, a driver will complete a thorough vehicle inspection and record any pre-existing damage on a Bill of Lading. You’ll sign off on this document, and the same inspection is repeated upon delivery in Washington. This protects you throughout the entire car shipping process. With Sherpa Auto Transport, Maryland to Washington car shipping is designed to be transparent, reliable, and stress-free from start to finish.

INSIGHTS & REGULATIONS

Maryland to Washington Car Transport: State Insights and Regulations

Auto transport truck carrying vehicles

Moving from Maryland to Washington means more than just arranging auto transport — it also means navigating new vehicle laws. When you arrive, Washington requires you to register your vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency. Maryland titles transfer easily, but you’ll need a Washington State patrol inspection if your vehicle’s VIN needs verification. Budget for Washington’s weight-based registration fees, which differ from Maryland’s flat-rate system and can be higher depending on your vehicle.

Both states take emissions seriously, but the rules differ. Maryland follows EPA emissions standards with regular OBD testing. Washington also requires emissions testing, but only in certain counties, including King, Pierce, and Snohomish. If you’re moving to a rural area, you may be exempt. Washington does not allow window tint darker than 24% on front side windows, which is slightly stricter than Maryland’s 35% limit — so check your tint before completing your Maryland to Washington car shipping journey.

Washington’s weather is a big shift from Maryland’s climate. The Pacific Northwest brings heavy rain, mountain snow, and icy roads. Before or after your car shipping is complete, consider equipping your vehicle with all-season or winter tires, especially if you plan to drive through mountain passes. Washington law requires chains or traction tires on many mountain routes during winter months. Adding rain-repellent treatments to your windshield and checking your wiper blades are also smart moves for the wet climate.

Insurance is another key consideration when shipping your car from Maryland to Washington. Washington state requires minimum liability coverage of 25/50/10, compared to Maryland’s 30/60/15 minimums. While Washington’s minimums are slightly lower, costs can vary based on your new county and driving conditions. Notify your insurer before your auto transport is scheduled so your policy reflects your new address from day one. Getting local quotes after arrival can also help you find better rates suited to Washington drivers.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Maryland to Washington Vehicle Transport FAQs

Getting your car ready for transport from Maryland to Washington is simple! Follow these key steps to ensure a smooth, damage-free shipment:

  • Clean your vehicle: Wash your car before pickup so the carrier can clearly document its condition during the inspection.
  • Document existing damage: Take photos of your vehicle from all angles before handing it over. This protects you if any disputes arise.
  • Remove personal belongings: Clear out any personal items from the interior. Most carriers are not insured to cover personal property.
  • Remove toll passes and parking tags: Devices like E-ZPass can accidentally scan and charge you during transit. Take them out before shipping.
  • Remove exterior accessories: Detach roof racks, spoilers, or bike racks that could be damaged or cause damage during transport.
  • Keep the fuel tank low: Aim for about a quarter tank of gas. Enough to load and unload, but not so much that it adds unnecessary weight.
  • Check for leaks and mechanical issues: Make sure your vehicle is in good working order. Notify your carrier of any known issues ahead of time.
  • Disable car alarms: An alarm that goes off during transit can be a major hassle for your driver. Disable it or provide instructions to turn it off.
  • Leave a spare key: Provide the carrier with a key so they can safely load and unload your vehicle.

For a full checklist, visit our Vehicle Shipping Tips page. Since Maryland and Washington are relatively close, your transit time will be short — but proper preparation still makes a big difference!

Yes, your vehicle is fully insured when shipping from Maryland to Washington with Sherpa Auto Transport. Every carrier in our network is required to carry a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance.

Before your car ever leaves Maryland, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is active and in good standing. We don’t just take their word for it — we check it ourselves.

Every contracted carrier is also required to add Sherpa Auto Transport as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy. This gives us an added layer of oversight to protect you and your vehicle throughout the entire trip to Washington.

Our quotes are all-inclusive, so there are no hidden fees or surprise charges. The price you see covers everything, including that peace of mind. If you have questions about coverage, our team is happy to walk you through the details before you book.

The sooner you schedule, the better. We recommend booking your car shipment from Maryland to Washington at least two weeks in advance. However, if your move date is flexible, posting your shipment even earlier gives carriers more time to bundle your vehicle with others heading in the same direction — which can also help lower your overall cost.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Book 2–4 weeks out for the best carrier availability and rates.
  • Peak seasons matter. Summer months and holidays see higher demand, so schedule even further in advance during those times.
  • Last-minute shipments are possible, but they may cost more and offer fewer carrier options.

Since Maryland and Washington are close in proximity, transit times are short — but carrier scheduling still requires lead time. Get a free quote from Sherpa Auto Transport today and lock in your pickup date before your spot fills up.

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

When shipping your car from Maryland to Washington, you have two options: open transport and enclosed transport.

Open transport is the most popular and affordable choice. Your vehicle rides on an open-air trailer — the same kind used to deliver new cars to dealerships. It’s safe, reliable, and gets the job done for most standard vehicles.

Enclosed transport costs roughly 50% more, but offers extra protection. Your car travels inside a fully covered trailer, shielded from road debris, weather, and other elements. This is the best choice if you’re shipping a:

  • Classic or vintage car
  • Luxury or exotic vehicle
  • Car with a custom paint job or low ground clearance

For most everyday vehicles making the Maryland to Washington trip, open transport is the smart, cost-effective choice. But if your car holds significant monetary or sentimental value, the added peace of mind from enclosed transport is well worth it.

Not sure which is right for you? Check out our in-depth open vs. enclosed auto transport guide to make the best decision for your vehicle.

Yes! Sherpa Auto Transport offers door-to-door auto transport service for all shipments from Maryland to Washington. This is the most convenient and popular option for our customers.

Here’s how it works: when you book your shipment, simply provide your preferred pickup address in Maryland and your delivery address in Washington. Your assigned carrier will come directly to you — no need to drop your vehicle off at a terminal.

Keep in mind that carriers drive large trucks, so tight residential streets or low-clearance areas can sometimes be a challenge. If your address is difficult to access, your driver will work with you to find a safe, nearby alternative — such as a local parking lot or gas station. This is rare, but it’s good to know ahead of time.

Door-to-door service saves you time and keeps the process simple. It’s just one of the ways Sherpa Auto Transport makes shipping your car from Maryland to Washington as stress-free as possible.

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket.

While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.
