TESTIMONIALS

What Sherpa’s Customers are Saying

I had purchased a car from Texas and I needed it transported to me here in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Sherpa was within $100 of the typical cost to bring it up. There were some companies that advertised $400, which I know wouldn’t even cover the gas, so I didn’t even think about them. But from looking at reviews on people that have used Sherpa, I felt comfortable with them, so I went with them.

Shawn, the driver, was wonderful. His partner reached out to me and informed me that they would be able to pick up my car. She told me what day they would be picking it up and what day to expect it here in my area for delivery. So, she kept me engaged as far as giving me a status. When they knew they weren’t gonna be able to make it a day earlier, they were very upfront, giving me a call to tell me that the driver had a delay, there was no additional fees for that delay, and was still able to get it to me on the day that they originally stated it would. So, it was very good communication.

The driver was a sweetheart. He picked the car up on a Friday. And it was delivered on a Tuesday. Whoever did it in Texas was a different person than I talked to, who was the ultimate driver. He called her a half an hour. He said he was 10 miles out. But she didn’t answer the phone. So, the driver called me. And I called her. And he called her. She lives in Austin, Texas.

KEY FACTORS

Factors that Affect California to Texas Shipping Prices

Distance

The 1,500-mile journey from Los Angeles to Houston significantly impacts shipping costs. This cross-country distance requires more fuel, driver time, and vehicle wear, making it more expensive than shorter regional routes but reasonable for major city-to-city transport.

Route

The LA-to-Houston corridor follows major interstates like I-10, keeping costs competitive. This well-traveled route offers excellent carrier availability and efficient transport times. Direct highway access in both cities eliminates difficult navigation, reducing overall shipping expenses compared to remote locations.

Season

Summer and early fall see increased demand for LA-to-Houston shipping as families relocate before school starts. Winter months typically offer better rates and faster booking. Planning your shipment during off-peak periods can save you hundreds of dollars on transport costs.

Vehicle Type

Compact cars and sedans ship most affordably from LA to Houston. Larger SUVs, trucks, and lifted vehicles cost more due to added weight, fuel consumption, and limited trailer space. Oversized vehicles may require specialized carriers, increasing both price and booking time significantly.

Traffic Considerations

Holiday periods like Thanksgiving week create highway congestion along the I-10 corridor, potentially delaying deliveries. Summer vacation months also see increased traffic. Scheduling your shipment during mid-week or non-holiday periods ensures smoother transport and helps carriers maintain their delivery timelines.

Carrier Availability

The LA-Houston route enjoys strong carrier availability year-round due to high demand between these major metros. However, peak summer months may require 1-2 weeks for booking, while winter off-season often offers pickups within days, providing flexibility and potentially lower rates.

Open vs Enclosed

Open transport is the economical choice for LA-to-Houston shipping, costing significantly less while safely transporting standard vehicles. Enclosed trailers protect luxury, classic, or exotic cars from weather and road debris but cost 40-60% more. Most customers choose open transport successfully.

Population Density

Both Los Angeles and Houston are sprawling metro areas with accessible suburbs and major highways. Urban core pickups may incur fees due to tight streets and parking challenges. Consider scheduling pickup or delivery in suburban areas with easy trailer access to reduce costs and simplify logistics.

TIPS & TRICKS

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

Off Season Savings

Timing matters when shipping your vehicle. Avoid peak seasons like summer and snowbird migration periods (October-November and March-April) when demand spikes. Booking just a few weeks outside these busy windows can significantly reduce your Los Angeles to Houston shipping costs.

Flexible Pickup & Delivery

Offering flexible pickup and delivery windows saves money. By allowing a five-day range instead of exact dates, carriers can optimize their routes and pass savings to you. This flexibility helps drivers consolidate shipments efficiently, reducing your overall cost.

Hub City Advantages

Location impacts pricing. Choose pickup and delivery spots near major highways like I-10, which connects Los Angeles and Houston directly. Highway-accessible locations attract more carriers, increasing competition and lowering rates. Rural areas typically cost more due to limited carrier access.

Open Trailers

Open trailers cost less than enclosed options. They’re perfect for standard vehicles and offer reliable protection during transport. Reserve enclosed trailers for luxury, classic, or high-value cars needing extra weather and road debris protection. Most vehicles ship safely on open carriers.

INSIGHTS & REGULATIONS

California to Texas Car Transport: State Insights and Regulations

Auto transport truck carrying vehicles

When planning car shipping from Los Angeles to Houston, understanding the regulatory differences between California and Texas is essential. Texas requires new residents to register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency. You’ll need to visit a Texas DMV office with your current registration, proof of insurance, and a passed vehicle inspection. California titles must be surrendered, and you’ll receive Texas plates immediately.

One major difference involves emissions testing. While California has strict smog check requirements, Texas eliminates this burden for most personal vehicles in Houston. However, Texas does require an annual safety inspection covering brakes, lights, and steering components. Window tinting laws also differ significantly—Texas allows darker tints (25% front side windows) compared to California’s stricter 70% requirement. If your Los Angeles vehicle has California-legal tint, it likely meets Texas standards.

Auto transport from Los Angeles to Houston means preparing for climate differences. Houston’s humid subtropical weather contrasts sharply with Southern California’s dry climate. Winter tires aren’t necessary, as Houston rarely sees freezing temperatures. However, consider checking your air conditioning system before the move, as Houston summers are intensely hot and humid. Your vehicle’s cooling system should be inspected to handle the increased moisture and heat.

Insurance considerations matter when relocating between states. Texas typically offers lower auto insurance rates than California, providing potential savings. However, Texas is an at-fault state, unlike California’s comparative negligence system. Contact your insurance provider before your Los Angeles to Houston car shipping date to ensure continuous coverage during transit. Most carriers require proof of insurance before transport. Update your policy to reflect your Texas address within 30 days of arrival to comply with state regulations and potentially reduce premiums.

Yes, your vehicle is fully insured during transport from Los Angeles to Houston. Sherpa Auto Transport works exclusively with licensed carriers who maintain comprehensive insurance coverage throughout your shipment.

Every carrier in our network is required to carry:

  • $1,000,000 in liability insurance – covers damages to third parties
  • $100,000 in cargo insurance – protects your vehicle during transit

You’ll receive a copy of the carrier’s insurance certificate before pickup. This ensures complete transparency and peace of mind as your vehicle travels the 1,500 miles from Los Angeles to Houston.

We recommend scheduling your car shipment from Los Angeles to Houston at least 1-2 weeks in advance. However, booking earlier gives you more options and often better rates.

Here’s why advance booking helps:

  • Better carrier availability: The Los Angeles to Houston route is popular, but carriers need time to plan their routes and combine shipments
  • More competitive pricing: Last-minute bookings (less than 5 days) often cost 20-30% more
  • Flexible pickup windows: More notice means you can choose dates that work best for your schedule

If you need faster service, we do offer expedited shipping with pickup in 1-5 days, though this comes at a premium price.

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

Open auto transport is the most common and affordable option. Your vehicle is loaded onto an open-air carrier (the kind you see on highways). It’s exposed to weather and road debris, but it’s perfectly safe for most vehicles and costs significantly less.

Enclosed auto transport provides full protection inside a covered trailer. It costs 40-60% more than open transport, but it’s worth considering for luxury cars, classic vehicles, or exotic models. For the LA to Houston route, enclosed transport offers extra peace of mind against desert dust and highway elements.

Most customers shipping standard vehicles from Los Angeles to Houston choose open transport—it’s reliable, economical, and used for over 90% of all car shipments nationwide. Reserve enclosed transport for high-value vehicles where maximum protection justifies the higher cost. Learn more in our open vs enclosed auto transport guide.

In most cases, we can accommodate residential addresses, business locations, and apartment complexes. This is typically a convenient public location like a shopping center parking lot or gas station within a few miles of your home.

Why choose door-to-door service? It saves you time and eliminates the hassle of driving to a terminal. For a cross-country route like Los Angeles to Houston (over 1,500 miles), the convenience is worth it for most customers.

We can also ship electric vehicles.

The city offers a unique blend of Southern hospitality, international culture, and economic opportunity that attracts newcomers from around the world.

Popular Neighborhoods

The Heights is a trendy area northwest of downtown featuring historic homes, walkable streets, and popular restaurants. River Oaks represents Houston’s upscale side with luxury homes and high-end shopping, while Katy offers suburban living with top-rated schools and easy highway access to downtown.

Practical Moving Tips

Texas requires new residents to obtain a Texas driver’s license within 90 days of establishing residency. You’ll need to register your vehicle within 30 days of moving to Texas. To register your car, you’ll need your current registration, proof of insurance, and a completed Form 130-U (Application for Texas Title and/or Registration). Texas requires annual vehicle inspections, which include both safety and emissions testing in Harris County where Houston is located. The inspection must be completed at an authorized station and costs around $25. You’ll also need to update your voter registration and vehicle insurance to reflect your new Texas address. Keep in mind that Texas has no state income tax, but vehicle registration fees and property taxes on cars can be higher than some other states.

Climate & Lifestyle

Houston has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures regularly reach the 90s with high humidity, while winters rarely drop below freezing. The city receives about 50 inches of rain annually, with occasional severe weather including hurricanes. Houston’s diverse food scene, professional sports teams, and year-round outdoor activities make it an exciting place to call home.

Getting Around Houston

The city’s highway system includes major routes like I-45, I-10, US-59/I-69, and Beltway 8, which can experience heavy traffic during rush hours. Commute times vary widely depending on your route and schedule, with some residents traveling 45 minutes or more to reach downtown.
