Factors that Impact Cost

Your route matters most—Asheville’s location near I-40 and I-26 offers competitive pricing, but remote mountain locations may cost more due to narrow roads and limited carrier access.

Tips and Tricks to Save

Book your Asheville car shipment 1-2 weeks in advance for the best rates and carrier availability, though we can arrange expedited pickup in 24-48 hours if needed.

How Car Shipping Works

New North Carolina residents must register their vehicle within 30 days and obtain liability insurance with minimum 30/60/25 coverage, plus pass an annual safety inspection (no emissions testing required in Buncombe County).

State Insights

Consider Asheville’s mountainous terrain when shipping—flexible pickup locations near major highways save money, and meeting carriers at accessible spots helps avoid challenges with steep, narrow residential streets.

TESTIMONIALS

What Sherpa’s Customers are Saying

I had a new car transported from NJ to Asheville, NC. The process went very well and I was pleased with the customer service, price, and delivery time (less than a week to get the car). The only minor problem was that I didn`t get a timely call from the driver, and he ended up showing up at my house – lucky I was home!

I’m very happy with my experience with Sherpa Auto Transport. They were very professional and easy to work with. The reservationist was very nice and easy to talk to. She took time to answer any questions I had. They found a great driver, James, who was so nice and professional. He has been doing this for over thirty years! He delivered my car from Asheville, North Carolina to Denver, Colorado in four days with no problems at all. From reservation to delivery, everything was a smooth ride!

Forgot the others like Montway with their bait and switch. Sherpa may present as costing more, but they will actually get the job done. Montway who quoted a price and when they never arrived one day before I was leaving town, I called them and they said, “Oh, you didn`t have a guaranteed date or price.” I was like what!!! Called Sherpa and they arrived the next day. Do it the right way the first time out, call Sherpa.

KEY FACTORS

Factors that Affect Asheville, NC Shipping Prices

Distance

Distance plays a key role in your shipping costs. The farther your vehicle travels, the higher the price. For example, shipping from Asheville to a nearby state like South Carolina will cost significantly less than shipping cross-country to California or Washington.

Route

Your route matters just as much as distance. Asheville sits near I-40 and I-26, which are major highways. Shipments along these well-traveled corridors typically cost less because carriers make regular runs on these routes. If you’re shipping to or from a remote mountain town or small community far from major interstates, expect to pay more.

Season

Timing affects your costs. Summer months and early fall see the highest demand for car shipping, which drives up prices. Winter typically offers lower rates, though weather can sometimes cause delays. If you have flexibility, shipping during the off-season can save you money.

Vehicle Type

What you’re shipping matters. Standard sedans are the most affordable to transport. SUVs and trucks cost more because they’re heavier, take up more space on the trailer, and increase fuel costs. Oversized vehicles may not fit on certain trailers, which can limit your options and increase prices.

Traffic Patterns

Peak travel times drive up costs. The week before Thanksgiving, spring break, and major holidays see heavy traffic nationwide. This congestion slows down carriers and increases demand. Book your shipment outside these busy windows when possible to get better rates and faster service.

Carrier Availability

When you book matters. During peak season, you might wait several weeks for an available carrier, and prices will be higher. During slower months, carriers are more readily available, often within just a few days, and you’ll typically get better rates.

Open vs Enclosed

You have two trailer options. Open trailers are the standard choice and cost less. Your vehicle is exposed to weather but perfectly safe for most cars. Enclosed trailers offer complete protection from the elements and are ideal for luxury, classic, or high-value vehicles. However, they cost significantly more.

Population Density

Your pickup and delivery locations impact pricing. Asheville itself is accessible, but if you’re in a remote mountain area with narrow, winding roads, carriers may charge extra or require you to meet at a more accessible location. Dense urban areas can also add costs due to parking restrictions and tight streets. Consider meeting your carrier in a suburb or at an easy-access location to save money.

TIPS & TRICKS

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

Off Season Savings

Shipping during off-peak months can significantly reduce your costs. Avoid busy periods like snowbird season when demand spikes. Even shifting your shipment by a few weeks can lead to noticeable savings and better carrier availability for your Asheville route.

Flexible Pickup & Delivery

Offering flexible pickup and delivery windows helps carriers optimize their routes, passing savings to you. By selecting a five-day window instead of exact dates, you’ll access lower rates while still getting reliable service. This simple flexibility can cut your shipping costs considerably.

Hub City Advantages

Asheville’s proximity to major highways like I-40 and I-26 offers competitive pricing advantages. Choose pickup locations near these routes for better carrier access and lower rates. If shipping to rural areas, consider meeting carriers at highway-accessible cities to reduce costs.

Open Trailers

Open trailers cost significantly less than enclosed options and work perfectly for most vehicles. Your car ships safely alongside others, exposed to weather but well-secured. Reserve enclosed trailers for luxury, classic, or high-value vehicles requiring maximum protection from elements.

INSIGHTS & REGULATIONS

Asheville, NC Car Transport: State Insights and Regulations

Auto transport truck carrying vehicles

When planning car shipping to Asheville, NC, understanding North Carolina’s vehicle requirements helps ensure a smooth transition. New residents must register their vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency and obtain a North Carolina driver’s license [NCDMV]. The state requires liability insurance with minimum coverage of 30/60/25, meaning $30,000 for bodily injury per person, $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage [NCDOI]. North Carolina follows a “fault” insurance system, so drivers should consider higher coverage limits than the minimum.

North Carolina requires annual safety inspections for all vehicles, but emissions testing only applies to certain counties—fortunately, Buncombe County (where Asheville is located) does not require emissions testing [NCDEQ]. The state has specific regulations on window tinting: front side windows must allow more than 35% light transmission, while any darkness is permitted on rear windows [NCDMV]. When using auto transport services to Asheville, consider the mountain climate. Winter weather in the Blue Ridge Mountains can be unpredictable, so all-season or winter tires are recommended from November through March. The elevation and winding mountain roads also mean regular brake maintenance is essential for safe driving in the area.

College Car Shipping

College & University Car Shipping in Asheville, NC

Students considering auto transport to Asheville, NC should understand parking logistics at local universities. At the University of North Carolina Asheville (UNCA), students must register vehicles and purchase parking permits through the campus parking services [UNCA Parking Services]. Freshmen living on campus typically cannot have cars their first year, so timing your car shipping becomes crucial. Most student apartments near campus don’t include guaranteed parking spots, requiring separate arrangements [UNCA Housing]. Before using car shipping services to ship a car to Asheville, consider the mountainous terrain—winter tires or all-season tires are recommended from November through March [NCDOT]. Students should verify their insurance coverage includes roadside assistance valid in North Carolina. For winter break storage, UNCA offers limited long-term parking options with advance registration, making it practical to leave vehicles on campus rather than arranging return car transport [UNCA Parking Services].

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Asheville, NC Vehicle Transport FAQs

Preparing your vehicle for transport from Asheville, NC is simple. Follow these key steps:

Remove personal items: Take out all belongings, toll passes, and loose items from your car. Carriers don’t insure personal property, and extra weight can affect shipping costs.

Clean your vehicle: Wash your car inside and out. This makes it easier to spot any existing damage during the inspection.

Document the condition: Take photos of your vehicle from all angles before pickup. Note any scratches or dents on the inspection report.

Check fluids and battery: Ensure your car has enough gas (about 1/4 tank), and the battery is charged. Fix any leaks before transport.

Remove accessories: Take off custom antennas, spoilers, bike racks, and other exterior add-ons that could get damaged.

Disable alarms: Turn off your car alarm to avoid issues during transit.

Provide a key: Have a working key ready for the driver at pickup.

We recommend scheduling your pickup from Asheville, NC at least 1-2 weeks in advance. However, booking earlier gives you the best rates and more carrier options.

Here’s why advance booking matters:

  • Better pricing: Early booking allows carriers to plan efficient routes and bundle shipments, which lowers costs.
  • More flexibility: You’ll have more pickup date options to choose from.
  • Peak season buffer: During summer months and holidays, book 3-4 weeks ahead when possible.

Need faster service? We offer expedited shipping with pickup in as little as 24-48 hours, though this costs more than standard service.

Bottom line: Book as soon as you know your moving dates. This gives carriers time to find the most efficient route through Asheville and saves you money.

We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

Open auto transport uses open-air trailers (like you see carrying cars on highways) and is the most popular and affordable option. Your vehicle is exposed to weather and road debris during transit, but it’s perfectly safe for most cars.

Enclosed auto transport ships your vehicle inside a covered trailer, protecting it from weather, dust, and road debris. This costs 40-60% more than open transport.

Which should you choose? Most Asheville residents use open transport—it’s reliable and cost-effective for everyday vehicles. Choose enclosed transport if you’re shipping a luxury car, classic vehicle, exotic sports car, or any car with custom paint or modifications that need extra protection.
