Factors that Affect Illinois Shipping Prices
Distance
Longer distances naturally increase shipping costs. A car shipped from Illinois to California will cost significantly more than transport to a neighboring state like Wisconsin.
Route
Major highways like I-80 or I-55 offer cheaper rates due to higher carrier traffic. Remote rural routes typically cost more because fewer carriers service these areas.
Season
Summer and fall see peak demand for car shipping, driving prices up. Winter months often offer lower rates due to decreased demand and more carrier availability.
Vehicle Type
Larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks cost more to ship. They’re heavier, consume more trailer space, burn more fuel, and are harder to load safely.
Traffic Patterns
Holiday periods like Thanksgiving week create shipping bottlenecks and delays. Booking during off-peak times can save money and ensure faster delivery for your vehicle.
Carrier Availability
During busy seasons, carriers fill up quickly, extending wait times. Booking early or choosing flexible dates helps secure better rates and faster pickup times.
Open vs Enclosed
Open trailers expose vehicles to weather but cost less. Enclosed trailers protect luxury or classic cars from elements but add 40-60% to shipping costs.
Population Density
Dense Chicago metro areas may cost more due to traffic and access challenges. Suburban or rural Illinois locations often offer simpler logistics and competitive pricing.
Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
Off Season Savings
Shipping your car during off-peak seasons can reduce costs significantly. Even waiting a few weeks to avoid busy periods like summer or holidays can lead to better rates and availability.
Flexible Pickup & Delivery
Offering a flexible five-day window for pickup and delivery helps carriers optimize their routes. This flexibility translates directly into lower shipping costs while still ensuring timely service for your vehicle.
Hub City Advantages
Select pickup locations near major Illinois highways like I-80, I-90, or I-55. Highway-accessible spots attract more carriers, increasing competition and giving you access to better rates and faster service options.
Open Trailers
Open trailers cost less than enclosed options for standard vehicles. Unless your car requires special protection, open transport is safe, reliable, and the most budget-friendly choice for Illinois shipping.

IL Car Transport: State Insights and Regulations

When planning car shipping to Illinois, understanding state-specific requirements helps ensure a smooth transition. Illinois requires vehicle registration within 30 days of establishing residency [Illinois Secretary of State]. New residents must provide proof of ownership, insurance, and pass a VIN inspection at a designated facility. The state mandates emissions testing for vehicles in the Chicago and Metro-East St. Louis areas, though vehicles four years old or newer are exempt [Illinois EPA].
Illinois law permits window tinting with specific limits: non-reflective tint is allowed on the top six inches of the windshield, while front side windows must allow more than 35% light transmission [625 ILCS 5/12-503]. The state requires minimum liability insurance coverage of 25/50/20, meaning $25,000 for bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, and $20,000 for property damage [Illinois Department of Insurance].
Those using auto transport services to Illinois should prepare vehicles for harsh winters. Consider installing winter tires and ensuring antifreeze levels are adequate for temperatures below zero. Road salt is heavily used, so undercoating protection is recommended. When shipping from Illinois, schedule auto transport before winter weather complicates logistics. Always verify your car shipping company is licensed and insured for interstate transport.

College & University Car Shipping in Illinois
Illinois hosts over 180 colleges and universities, with major student hubs in Champaign-Urbana (University of Illinois), Chicago (Northwestern, DePaul, University of Chicago), and Normal (Illinois State University) [Illinois Board of Higher Education]. When shipping your vehicle to campus, verify parking permit requirements early—many universities have limited freshman parking or require permits costing $200-$600 annually [University]. Students moving to Illinois should plan auto transport 2-3 weeks before semester starts to ensure timely delivery. Consider shipping your car home during winter and summer breaks to avoid campus storage fees, which can exceed $500 per semester [University]. Off-campus storage facilities near major universities typically charge $50-$150 monthly for vehicle storage [Self Storage Association]. Coordinate delivery addresses with your housing office, as many residence halls don’t allow direct vehicle drop-off.
Military Car Shipping in Illinois
Military personnel relocating to Illinois have several key installations to consider, including Scott Air Force Base near Belleville and the Rock Island Arsenal [DoD]. When planning a PCS move to Illinois, service members should arrange auto transport 2-3 weeks in advance to ensure timely delivery [USTRANSCOM]. Upon arrival, you’ll need to register your vehicle with the Illinois Secretary of State within 30 days and obtain base decals from your installation’s Vehicle Registration Office [Illinois SOS]. Active-duty members are exempt from Illinois emissions testing if maintaining out-of-state registration [DMDC]. Sherpa Auto Transport offers military discounts and flexible scheduling to accommodate last-minute orders, ensuring your vehicle arrives safely at your new duty station. We coordinate directly with base access requirements to streamline the delivery process.

Yes, your vehicle is insured during transport. All carriers in the Sherpa Auto Transport network are required to carry cargo insurance that covers your vehicle while it’s being shipped.
Sherpa also provides additional coverage for extra peace of mind. This means your car has protection from the moment it’s picked up until it’s delivered to your door.
Before transport begins, your carrier will provide proof of insurance. We recommend reviewing this documentation and taking photos of your vehicle before shipping. If any damage occurs during transit, you’ll be protected.
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

- Route popularity: Common routes to and from major Illinois cities like Chicago often have more carriers available, allowing for shorter notice.
- Flexibility: If your dates are flexible, you may find better rates even with less advance notice.
