What Sherpa’s Customers are Saying

Google
Finally a reliable & professional transport company! After multiple bad experiences with other mediocre providers, we landed on Sherpa Auto Transport that delivered our cars exactly as advertised! We used Sherpa in June 2025 to transport one car from Miami to NJ and a second car from NJ to San Diego. Both transports went smoothly and on time! We were kept informed on the exact ETA (San Diego delivery even arrived a day earlier). Jeremiah, our contact @ Sherpa, was super responsive to address any question we had throughout both transports. We plan on using Sherpa again in September and recommend others to use them as well!

Sherpa was courteous, informative, helpful every step of the way. We had to ship my dad a new car from NJ to Naples Florida after the hurricane destroyed his previous car. We did a lot of research and Sherpa was by far the best company. Their price was fair and they followed through with everything they promised. They sent me updates every step of the way from beginning to end. Their driver was professional and courteous and the representative on the phone was very impressive and made me feel like our vehicle was in great hands and would be taken care of properly. I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again. There are a lot of bad transport companies out there and this is one you can trust!

I reached out to Sherpa to handle the logistics of moving my vehicle from FL to NJ. First time using a vehicle transport and they answered all my questions and I had many. They are not the cheapest but you get what you pay for. I requested Door to door service since dropping the vehicle off and picking it up at a lot was not something I could do. I had some personal items in the back and it arrived exactly how it was stored. The communication was great and they made sure the process was clear all the way to delivery. It was a very positive experience especially being my first time doing this. I would definitely use them again.

KEY FACTORS

Factors that Affect New Jersey Shipping Prices

Distance

The farther your car needs to travel, the more you’ll pay. Longer hauls mean more fuel, more driver time, and higher overall shipping costs.

Route

Shipping along major highways is cheaper and faster. Rural or off-the-beaten-path routes take more time and effort, which drives up the price.

Season

Demand for car shipping spikes in summer and during snowbird season. Higher demand means higher prices, so shipping in the off-season can save you money.

Vehicle Type

Larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks take up more space and use more fuel. Expect to pay more to ship them than a standard sedan.

Traffic Patterns

Busy travel periods, like the days before Thanksgiving, slow carriers down. Choosing a quieter window can mean faster delivery and lower costs.

Carrier Availability

During peak seasons, carriers book up fast. Less availability means longer wait times and potentially higher rates to secure a spot.

Open vs Enclosed

Open trailers are the most affordable option. Enclosed trailers offer extra protection but cost more — ideal for luxury or classic cars.

Population Density

Shipping to or from a busy city like Newark can cost more than a suburban pickup or drop-off. High traffic and limited access add time and expense.

TIPS & TRICKS

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

Off Season Savings

Car shipping rates drop during the off-season. Even shifting your shipment by a few weeks can lead to real savings. Avoid peak summer months and holiday periods to get the best prices on New Jersey auto transport.

Flexible Pickup & Delivery

Choosing a five-day window for pickup and delivery can lower your shipping cost. Carriers can plan more efficient routes when they have flexible scheduling, and they pass those savings on to you.

Hub City Advantages

Pick a pickup or drop-off location close to a major New Jersey highway, like I-95 or the New Jersey Turnpike. Carriers travel these routes often, so more options are available and rates tend to be more competitive.

Open Trailers

Open trailers cost less than enclosed trailers and work well for most standard vehicles. If your car doesn’t need extra protection from the elements, choosing an open trailer is a simple way to save money on shipping.

HOW IT WORKS

How does Car Shipping from New Jersey Work?

Picturesque view of New Jersey

Shipping a car to or from New Jersey is simple with Sherpa Auto Transport. We serve 18 cities across the state, connecting New Jersey to top destinations nationwide. The process starts with a free quote. Once you book, we match you with a trusted carrier. Most pickups are scheduled within 1–5 business days. Open transport is the most popular and affordable option, while enclosed transport offers extra protection for luxury or classic vehicles. Door-to-door auto transport is available for added convenience.

New Jersey’s dense highway network — including the I-95, I-78, and the New Jersey Turnpike — makes it a well-connected hub for auto transport. However, heavy traffic in the tri-state area can affect pickup and delivery windows. When shipping a car to or from New Jersey, keep in mind that urban areas like Newark and Jersey City may require terminal pickup in some cases. Total transit times typically range from 1–7 days depending on the destination. With Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise, the quote you receive is the price you pay — no surprises at delivery.

INSIGHTS & REGULATIONS

NJ Car Transport: State Insights and Regulations

Auto transport truck carrying vehicles

When planning car shipping to or from New Jersey, it helps to know the state’s vehicle rules. New Jersey requires new residents to register their vehicle within 60 days of establishing residency [NJ MVC]. You’ll need a valid NJ driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a passed vehicle inspection to complete registration [NJ MVC]. New Jersey mandates emissions testing for most gasoline-powered vehicles every two years [NJ DEP]. Window tint laws restrict front side windows to no more than 35% VLT (visible light transmission) [NJ MVC].

New Jersey is a no-fault insurance state, meaning your own insurance covers your injuries regardless of who caused the accident [NJDOBI]. Drivers must carry minimum liability coverage of 15/30/5, but higher coverage is strongly recommended [NJDOBI]. When using auto transport services, confirm your carrier provides adequate coverage during transit.

New Jersey winters can be harsh, so prepare your vehicle accordingly. Consider switching to winter tires, checking your antifreeze levels, and inspecting your battery before cold months arrive [AAA]. If you’re shipping a car to New Jersey in winter, inform your auto transport provider about weather delays, as coastal storms and nor’easters can affect delivery timelines. Planning ahead ensures a smooth car shipping experience.

College Car Shipping

New Jersey is home to prestigious institutions like Rutgers University, Princeton University, and Seton Hall University, attracting students from across the country [University]. Before shipping your car to campus, research parking permit requirements early — spots fill fast and costs vary by school [University]. Many urban campuses near Newark or New Brunswick have limited parking, so confirm availability before your vehicle arrives. During winter and summer breaks, consider off-campus storage facilities in cities like Trenton or Edison as a cost-effective alternative to shipping your car home [StateDMV]. Pro tip: schedule your auto transport 2–3 weeks in advance around move-in weekends to avoid delays during peak demand periods.

Military Car Shipping

Military Car Shipping in New Jersey

New Jersey is home to several key military installations, including Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst and Picatinny Arsenal [DoD]. If you’re completing a PCS move to the Garden State, start your auto transport early — military relocations move fast. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Use your PCS orders when booking transport; many carriers offer military discounts [MilitaryOneSource].
  • Register your vehicle on base promptly — Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst requires current proof of insurance, valid ID, and registration within 30 days of arrival [USArmy].
  • Coordinate delivery timing with your reporting date to avoid storage fees.
  • Confirm the transport company is FMCSA-licensed for a secure, compliant shipment [FMCSA].

I had Sherpa transport my BMW 4 Series from New Jersey to Florida. I liked when they could pick up the car, they were responsive on the telephone, they had good reviews and everything they said was true. It was everything I asked for. The car got here in the same condition when I left it in New Jersey, and it got here in two days, which was awesome. They dropped it off at our street. They contacted me and let me know that they were there. They also let me know when they were going to be there. I was super satisfied.

I recently needed a transport service to move my daughter’s car to the West Coast, and having used Sherpa Auto Transport twice in the past, I decided to go with them again. The transport was from New Jersey to California, and the process took about two weeks. The pickup was straightforward; they came to the house and inspected the car. I found their price lock promise and the quoted price to be satisfactory. I would definitely recommend Sherpa for their services.

I contacted Sherpa to transport my daughter’s car from NJ to Arizona. The experience and the communication from start to finish exceeded my expectations. The car was picked up by the carrier on day 3 of the 5 day window and delivered 4 days later and earlier than expected. The driver was so nice and provided status updates along the way. The cost was $1,500 with a $50 rebate once delivery occurred which I think was reasonable given the distance. I will not hesitate to use Sherpa again.

Could not have been an easier experience shipping my car from NJ to CO. Drivers were on time and very communicative, and were able to meet me close to home on both ends of the trip. The drivers even took a few steps to ensure that my car would be safe, and even took my EZPass off the windshield so that I would not be billed while the car was being transported. I had certainly not thought of that! This was my first experience shipping a car and it was seamless.

I had my car shipped from NJ to TX. It was a bit last minute, and I was glad they found someone to ship my car in the first place. I paid extra ($250 I believe) to have it picked up ASAP since I had a flight to Texas and the previous company I found didn’t seem to be making any moves to get my car picked up. My car got here on time and was picked up on time. I give them props for getting it picked up and here on time.

New Jersey Vehicle Transport FAQs

Preparing your vehicle for auto transport in New Jersey is simple. Follow these key steps to ensure a smooth pickup and delivery:

  • Remove personal belongings: Take out all personal items from the interior and trunk. Carriers are not licensed to transport personal property, and loose items can shift and cause damage during transit.
  • Document existing damage: Take clear photos of your vehicle from all angles before pickup. This gives you a solid record in case any disputes arise at delivery.
  • Keep the gas tank about ¼ full: Enough fuel is needed to load and unload the vehicle, but a full tank adds unnecessary weight.
  • Disable your alarm: An alarm that goes off during transport can cause major delays. Disable it or leave instructions for the driver.
  • Ensure the vehicle is operable: Make sure your car starts and drives. If your vehicle is inoperable, notify your carrier in advance, as special equipment may be required.
  • Retract or secure loose parts: Fold in mirrors, remove spoilers or custom accessories if possible, and secure any loose parts that could be damaged by wind or road debris.
  • Give it a wash: A clean car makes it much easier to spot any pre-existing scratches or dings during the inspection process.

Yes — your vehicle is insured during transport. Every carrier in Sherpa Auto Transport’s network is required to carry cargo insurance as a condition of working with us. This means your car is protected from the moment it’s loaded onto the truck until it’s delivered to you in New Jersey.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Carrier cargo insurance covers damage that occurs during transit. Coverage limits vary by carrier, but all carriers in our network meet minimum federal insurance requirements.
  • Sherpa’s added protection goes a step further. We provide additional coverage on top of the carrier’s policy for extra peace of mind.
  • Before transport, a Bill of Lading is completed at pickup. This document records the current condition of your vehicle. Always review it carefully and note any pre-existing damage before signing.
  • At delivery, inspect your vehicle thoroughly before signing the final Bill of Lading. If you notice any new damage, note it on the form immediately.

For most shipments to or from New Jersey, we recommend booking at least 1–2 weeks in advance. This gives carriers enough time to plan their routes and ensures you have flexibility in your pickup window.

That said, timing can vary based on a few key factors:

  • Peak seasons: Summer and the snowbird season (fall/spring) are the busiest times for auto transport. During these periods, book 2–4 weeks ahead to secure the best rates and availability.
  • Last-minute shipping: Need to ship on short notice? It’s possible, but expedited options typically cost more and offer fewer carrier choices.
  • New Jersey traffic and logistics: The tri-state area is one of the busiest corridors in the country. Booking early helps carriers navigate dense pickup and delivery schedules more efficiently.

The earlier you book, the more control you have over your schedule — and your price. With Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise, the quote you receive is the price you pay, so locking in early protects you from rate fluctuations.

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

When shipping your car to or from New Jersey, you’ll choose between two main transport methods: open and enclosed auto transport.

Open transport is the most popular and budget-friendly option. Your vehicle is loaded onto an open-air carrier — the same kind you’ve likely seen hauling cars on the highway. It’s safe, reliable, and works great for most standard vehicles. The trade-off is that your car is exposed to the elements, like weather and road debris, during transit.

Enclosed transport places your vehicle inside a fully covered trailer, shielding it from weather, dust, and road hazards. This option costs more — typically 30–40% higher than open transport — but it’s the preferred choice for luxury cars, classic vehicles, exotics, or any car with high sentimental or monetary value.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Open Transport: Lower cost, widely available, ideal for everyday vehicles
  • Enclosed Transport: Higher cost, added protection, best for high-value or classic cars

Yes! Sherpa Auto Transport offers door-to-door car shipping service throughout New Jersey — and across the entire country. That means we pick up your vehicle directly from your home, office, or any other specified address and deliver it as close to your destination as safely and legally possible.

Door-to-door service is the most convenient option for most customers. You don’t have to drive your car to a terminal or worry about arranging extra transportation. We come to you.

Keep in mind that “door-to-door” doesn’t always mean the carrier will pull directly into your driveway. Large car haulers sometimes need to meet you at a nearby open area — like a parking lot or wide street — due to size and road restrictions. But our team will always work with you to find the most convenient pickup and drop-off spot possible.

Here’s what you can expect with Sherpa’s door-to-door service:

  • Flexible pickup locations — your home, workplace, or another address of your choice
  • Direct delivery — your vehicle goes straight to your destination, not to a storage terminal
  • Price transparency — thanks to our Price Lock Promise, the quote you receive won’t change at pickup

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket.

While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.
