Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Gardena customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“They came on time and everything was right. Also, they were accommodating. When they came, they looked at the position where they will be able to park because of the long trailer. It wasn`t close. They went to the major road, parked there, and drove the car up. The condition that they took it as is the condition they delivered it.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I’ve had horrible experiences making calls a 2 yrs ago, planning a move and needing my car shipped. I was getting hammered for a couple weeks by annoying calls, texts, and emails from many transport companies that didn’t seem legit. Fast forward, my moving plans fell through, and this time around, I took my time researching for reliable transport companies. I stumbled upon Sherpa reviews here, which made me more comfortable and confident to call, needing my car shipped from San Diego to Florida.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“We shipped a Chrysler 200 from Palm Springs, California to Chicago, Illinois. I looked at Sherpa because I got a good track record with them. I had three good experiences in a row. The quote I got was very fair. I like that they have a program whereby for $100 more, you can tighten the pickup and delivery window, which is really important when you’re traveling and you are gonna get on an airplane.”

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey from or to Gardena, CA significantly impacts car shipping costs. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and affordable option for auto transport to or from Gardena. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers extra protection for high-value vehicles against Gardena’s occasional rain or coastal elements.
  • Location Accessibility: Gardena’s proximity to major highways like I-110 and I-405 can help reduce costs. Urban areas are typically cheaper for car shipping than rural locations due to easier access for carriers.
  • Vehicle Size and Weight: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, cost more to ship to or from Gardena than standard cars due to the space and fuel they require.
  • Seasonal Demand: Auto transport prices in Gardena may fluctuate with seasonal demand. Summer months and January often see higher rates due to increased relocation activity.
  • Delivery Timeframe: Flexible pickup and delivery dates can lead to more competitive pricing for Gardena car shipping. Expedited services are available but come at a premium.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are cheaper to transport to or from Gardena. Non-running cars require special equipment, increasing the cost.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Gardena car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-110 or I-405. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your price.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offer a range of dates for pickup and delivery. This flexibility can help you secure better rates and options for your Gardena auto transport needs.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer. Scheduling your car shipping during off-peak times can result in more competitive pricing.
  • Prepare your vehicle: Ensure your car is in good working condition. A well-maintained vehicle is easier to load and transport, potentially reducing handling costs.

When planning car shipping to or from Gardena, CA, it’s crucial to understand local vehicle requirements and regulations. California has strict emissions standards, so ensure your vehicle complies before shipping. If you’re moving to Gardena, you’ll need to register your vehicle with the California DMV within 20 days of establishing residency. The process involves completing a registration application, providing proof of insurance, and passing a smog check for most vehicles.

For those using auto transport services to Gardena, remember to remove your FasTrak transponder if you have one. This toll collection device is used on many Southern California highways, and you don’t want to incur charges while your car is being shipped. Additionally, Gardena’s proximity to Los Angeles means you may need to consider parking permits depending on your new neighborhood.

When settling in Gardena, set up utilities promptly. Golden State Water Company provides water services, while Southern California Edison handles electricity. For internet, you have options like Spectrum and Frontier. Don’t forget to update your address with the USPS and register to vote in your new city.

Gardena’s Mediterranean climate means mild winters and warm summers. When shipping a car here, consider the timing. Summer months might see higher demand for car shipping services, potentially affecting prices and availability.

Gardena, California Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Gardena?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Gardena. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Gardena?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Gardena?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Gardena?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

When scheduling car shipping to or from Gardena, CA, it’s crucial to consider the area’s unique climate and seasonal factors. Gardena experiences a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters, which generally favors year-round auto transport. During summer months (June to September), temperatures can soar, potentially affecting your vehicle during transport. To protect your car:

  • Place a sunshade under the windshield to reduce interior heat
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items from the vehicle

While Gardena rarely experiences extreme winter conditions, occasional rainstorms can occur from November to March. For winter car transport:

  • Ensure your vehicle has proper tire tread for wet conditions
  • Check that windshield wipers are in good condition
  • Avoid storing moisture-sensitive items in the car

When choosing a car shipping company for Gardena auto transport, consider these seasonal factors:

“I was moving across the country from California to Virginia and I needed a transport service. After looking at 15 different transport companies, I chose Sherpa Auto Transport because of the way they broker people. I asked them a couple of quality management questions and they answered these well. I asked them how they got their subcontractors so I would know that my car would be safe. They were good and the way they answered my questions made me feel comfortable. The rep`s knowledge and expertise on the service they offered were very good and these were enough for me to wanna pay $1300 for the service. Sherpa was $200 more expensive than other transport companies, but they told me how the process works when they bid, so I understood a lot of things that made me be okay with their price. He fulfilled his commitment and what I paid them in total was what was quoted. Also, my understanding was they were a new company and I have a little bit of favoritism for new people trying to make a way in the world. So that sort of swayed me a little bit.”

“I wanted something that was one to three days, not a five-plus days and I had to pay Sherpa a little bit more but it was worth it. They kept their word. It was very good dealing with the reps and they told me how it all worked. They found out that when I was looking around for quotes, someone had put my name on a board. One of those companies put my name on there so there was gonna be an issue with me trying to book something because it would look like I would have two bookings. The agent was nice and told me what to do, so I`m very happy about that. Because at the last minute, they may cancel both reservations. I was just so upset. If he didn`t tell me, I would have had a problem. I just had to go back in my emails and look at the companies that I was getting quotes from and send all of them an email telling them to take my name off the board immediately. I found out who the company was and it worked. They took it off. I was impressed with Sherpa’s service. The delivery of the vehicle went great. The guy came at the scheduled time. He called me a week before saying this is when he would be coming. He called me the day before and then the day of, saying he`ll be here within an hour. He communicated. The vehicle was just as when he picked it up. It was fine. The guy made sure everything was noted correctly upon pickup and drop off, and he gave me the bill of lading. During the drop off, he gave it to me as well and then, I paid him. I’m very happy with Sherpa.”

“My daughter moved to North Carolina and I looked at dozens of different transport companies before choosing Sherpa Auto Transport. We went through various Yelp and other rating web services, and Consumer Reports rated Sherpa as the best choice. The customer service rep at Sherpa was great, very informative, and had a great demeanor. The initial quote was higher than everybody else, but I wasn’t willing to take a chance with a company that wasn’t rated well. The vehicle was shipped from my house in California to where my daughter is in North Carolina and they did fine. They showed up when they said they were going to. However, because of the flooding in North Carolina, the driver had to talk her through how he was gonna get there. My daughter didn’t have any transportation to get to where the car was potentially going to be delivered, but the driver finally got it within a mile off where she was living. The cost was good and the drivers on both ends did a good job. My only gripe at the whole thing is when they loaded the vehicle on to the long distance transport, it wasn’t taking off. Something happened to the back of the car after it left my house and before it got to North Carolina because there was a dime-sized ding in the back bumper. My daughter said she was gonna either call Sherpa or the transport company to find out what she could get done about it. Overall, it was a good experience. They handled the transport well especially considering the fact that it was an unknown situation in North Carolina when we were trying to ship the car. Sherpa did a good job.”

Consumer Affairs

“Sherpa Auto was the third company to book my vehicle, a 2010 Toyota Camry, for shipping from Georgia to California. The first company and second company failed to do their jobs, I was calling them more than they were calling me, and I almost gave up shipping my car and was going to resort to putting it in storage until I finished with school. Being that I was on military orders and I had to report to school by a certain time. The first company set a date for pickup and they never followed through. That date came and went. The second Company told me what I wanted to hear and took advantage of the situation by their knowledge of knowing what happened with my first experience. But I called Sherpa on Thursday and they got my vehicle booked and shipped by Saturday morning. 2 days!!! Not to mention my car was delivered within 4 days… ACROSS THE COUNTRY! Their customer service is awesome and they understand the importance of moving from one place to the next and owning two vehicles that can’t be driven at the same time. If you are booked with any other company besides Sherpa, cancel the order and call them now. Yes, the shipping price is a little costly than other companies, but if you want guaranteed service without the headaches, pay the extra money. Thank you Sherpa Auto for your awesome service. Your efforts and reliability are greatly appreciated.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Gardena, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of California. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel.
