Factors that Impact Cost

Distance is the biggest cost driver on this route, but shipping during summer peak season or to a remote mountain town like Aspen can push your price noticeably higher.

Tips and Tricks to Save

Booking at least two weeks in advance and choosing a flexible 5-day pickup window are the easiest ways to lock in a lower rate on this route.

How Car Shipping Works

Once a carrier is assigned, your vehicle is inspected, loaded onto a trailer, and delivered door-to-door — typically within 1–4 days of leaving California.

State Insights

Colorado requires new residents to register their vehicle within 90 days, and drivers heading to mountain areas should prepare for winter road conditions that may require snow tires or chains.

TESTIMONIALS

What Sherpa’s Customers are Saying

We used them to transport our car from California and the driver called us for the pickup. My wife got the call and it was a couple hours in advance that he was coming by. He parked on a bigger street, not on our residential street because the car carrier would not fit on our street, and we drove the car out there, which was a couple hundred feet. He loaded the car up and he was very nice and personable. The car arrived in Colorado 3 days later which was still within the time quoted and my daughter received it. She paid him and it went really well.

The two people that came to get the car were very professional and knowledgeable as well. The truck was very clean, and it did not seem like it was old. Sherpa’s was a very well-maintained vehicle where they transported my car. From San Francisco, California to Denver, Colorado, it only took 24 hours. I was shocked! Other places told me it would take anywhere from three to five days. They also handled it very well with my son on the other end, and it came in perfect condition just as they picked it up.

Online form was easy to fill out. Received a call within 20 min from a representative who clearly explained the service, how it worked, and provided a quote. A bit of a snafu on pick up day as the carrier “forgot” to stop when driving through my town but we were able to catch up with him and met him the next town over. Car arrived in Denver, Colorado 4 days later and the process for pickup was very smooth. Great communication from SHERPA and I would certainly use them again. They were far superior to the previous company.

KEY FACTORS

Factors that Affect California to Colorado Shipping Prices

Distance

California to Colorado spans roughly 1,000–1,300 miles depending on your exact cities. More miles mean more fuel, more driver time, and higher costs — so expect that distance to be reflected in your quote.

Route

Most California-to-Colorado shipments travel along major interstates like I-70 or I-15, which keeps costs lower. Routes through rural or hard-to-reach areas add complexity and can push prices higher.

Season

Summer is peak moving season, meaning higher demand and higher prices. Winter can bring mountain road closures along I-70 through the Rockies, causing delays. Spring and fall tend to offer the best rates.

Vehicle Type

Standard sedans are the cheapest to ship. SUVs and trucks take up more trailer space, weigh more, and burn more fuel. Some carriers can’t accommodate oversized trucks at all, so always expect to pay more for larger vehicles.

Traffic Considerations

Avoid shipping around major holidays like Thanksgiving or Memorial Day. Carrier routes through Las Vegas and Denver get congested during peak travel weeks, causing delays and sometimes higher last-minute rates. Plan ahead when possible.

Carrier Availability

California-to-Colorado is a well-traveled route, so carriers are usually available. However, during summer peak season, booking a carrier can take longer. Reserve your shipment at least two weeks in advance to lock in better rates.

Open vs Enclosed

Open transport is the most affordable option and works well for standard vehicles on this route. If you’re shipping a luxury, classic, or exotic car, an enclosed trailer offers extra protection — especially through Colorado’s unpredictable mountain weather.

Population Density

Shipping to Denver or Colorado Springs is straightforward. However, delivering to mountain towns like Aspen or Telluride can cost more due to narrow roads and limited carrier access. Consider meeting your carrier at a nearby flatland location to save money.

TIPS & TRICKS

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

Off Season Savings

Shipping during the off-season can save you money. Avoid peak times like snowbird season. Even shifting your shipment by a few weeks can lead to noticeably lower rates on your California to Colorado route.

Flexible Pickup & Delivery

Choosing a five-day pickup and delivery window gives carriers more scheduling flexibility. That flexibility often translates to lower costs for you. If your timeline allows it, flexible dates are an easy way to save.

Hub City Advantages

Carriers travel major highways regularly, so pickup and drop-off points near those routes attract more drivers. More drivers mean more competition and better rates. If shipping to a rural Colorado area, consider a nearby hub city instead.

Open Trailers

Open trailers cost less than enclosed ones and work well for most standard vehicles. If you drive an everyday car, an open trailer is a smart, budget-friendly choice. Save enclosed trailers for luxury or classic cars needing extra protection.

HOW IT WORKS

How does Car Shipping from California to Colorado Work?

Picturesque view of Colorado

Shipping a car from California to Colorado is a straightforward process when you work with a trusted auto transport company like Sherpa Auto Transport. The route covers an average distance of 1,120 miles, taking your vehicle through the scenic Southwest and into the Rocky Mountain region. Whether you’re relocating, purchasing a vehicle, or sending a car to a family member, California to Colorado car shipping is one of the more popular interstate routes in the western United States.

The process begins with getting a quote and booking your shipment. Once you schedule your pickup, a licensed carrier is assigned to collect your vehicle from your chosen location in California. Before loading, you and the driver will complete a vehicle inspection report, documenting any pre-existing condition. Your car is then secured onto either an open or enclosed carrier and begins its journey east toward Colorado. Upon arrival, a final inspection is completed to confirm your vehicle was delivered in the same condition it was picked up.

There are a few unique considerations for this specific route. Colorado’s higher elevations and variable mountain weather — especially during fall and winter — can occasionally affect transit schedules. If you’re shipping to cities like Denver, Colorado Springs, or Boulder, carriers navigate well-traveled interstates like I-70, keeping things efficient. For mountain destinations or rural areas, additional coordination may be needed. Enclosed auto transport is worth considering if you want extra protection against road debris or harsh weather conditions along the way.

From start to finish, California to Colorado car shipping typically takes between 1 and 4 days once your vehicle is picked up. Pricing for this route generally ranges from $950 to $1,275, depending on the transport type, vehicle size, and time of year. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we make the process simple and transparent — so you always know where your car is and what you’re paying. INSIGHTS & REGULATIONS

California to Colorado Car Transport: State Insights and Regulations

Auto transport truck carrying vehicles

Moving from California to Colorado means more than just packing boxes — your vehicle needs attention too. Whether you’re planning California to Colorado car shipping or driving yourself, understanding the key differences between these two states will save you time and money. Colorado requires new residents to register their vehicle within 90 days of establishing residency. Unlike California, Colorado does not require a smog check for most vehicles, though emissions testing is required in certain counties like Denver and Boulder. California’s strict CARB (California Air Resources Board) standards won’t follow you to Colorado, but you should still confirm your vehicle meets Colorado’s local requirements before completing registration.

Vehicle laws differ in other ways too. California prohibits window tint on front side windows, while Colorado allows up to 27% light transmission on those same windows. Colorado also has more relaxed frame height and lift kit regulations compared to California. If you’ve modified your vehicle to meet California’s tighter standards, some of those restrictions may no longer apply once you’ve relocated.

One of the biggest adjustments for California drivers is Colorado’s weather. Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures are common, especially in mountain regions. Before or shortly after your auto transport is complete, consider switching to all-season or winter tires, adding an engine block heater, and stocking your car with an emergency winter kit. Colorado law also requires traction devices like snow tires or chains on certain mountain roads during winter months, so being prepared is essential.

Insurance is another area to review carefully. Colorado generally has lower minimum liability requirements than California, but that doesn’t mean you should reduce your coverage. Colorado’s unpredictable weather and higher rates of hail damage make comprehensive coverage a smart investment. Contact your insurance provider before your car shipping service delivers your vehicle to ensure your policy reflects your new state of residence and provides adequate protection year-round.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

California to Colorado Vehicle Transport FAQs

Preparing your vehicle for shipment from California to Colorado is simple. Follow these key steps to ensure a smooth transit:

  • Clean your car: Wash your vehicle before pickup so it’s easy to spot any pre-existing scratches or dents during the inspection.
  • Document the condition: Take clear photos of all sides of your car before the carrier arrives. This protects you in the rare event of a dispute.
  • Remove personal items: Clear out any personal belongings from the interior. Most carriers are not insured to cover personal items left inside.
  • Remove or secure accessories: Take off any exterior accessories like bike racks, spoilers, or antenna extensions that could be damaged in transit.
  • Remove toll passes and parking tags: Remove your FasTrak or any other toll pass to avoid unexpected charges during the drive.
  • Leave a quarter tank of gas: Keep the fuel level at about ¼ of a tank. Enough to load and unload the vehicle, but not so much that it adds unnecessary weight.
  • Check for leaks and mechanical issues: Make sure your car is in drivable condition with no major fluid leaks. Carriers may refuse a vehicle that is leaking fluids.
  • Provide a spare key: Have a working key ready to hand off to your carrier at pickup.

Yes, your vehicle is insured when shipping from California to Colorado with Sherpa Auto Transport. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Every carrier we work with is required to carry a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance.
  • Before your vehicle is ever picked up, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and active for the full duration of your shipment.
  • All contracted carriers are required to add Sherpa Auto Transport as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy — giving you an extra layer of protection.

We also recommend checking with your personal auto insurance provider before shipping. Some policies offer supplemental coverage during transport, which can give you additional peace of mind on the road from California to Colorado.

Have questions about coverage? Contact our team — we’re happy to walk you through the details before you book.

The sooner you book, the better. We recommend scheduling your pickup at least two weeks in advance — but if you can book earlier, do it. Here’s why:

  • Carrier availability: The California to Colorado route is popular, but carriers fill up fast — especially during peak moving seasons like summer and the holidays.
  • Better pricing: Last-minute shipments often cost more. Booking ahead gives you access to more competitive rates.
  • Route bundling: Carriers prefer to bundle multiple shipments along the same route. The earlier you post your order, the more likely a carrier will pick it up quickly and at a lower cost.

If you’re in a time crunch and need expedited pickup, that option is available — but expect to pay a premium. For a smooth, stress-free experience, two to four weeks of lead time is the sweet spot for shipping your car from California to Colorado.

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

Open transport is the most popular and affordable option. Your car rides on an open-air trailer — the same type used to deliver new cars to dealerships. It’s a great choice for most standard vehicles making the trip from California to Colorado. The only trade-off is exposure to weather and road debris along the route.

Enclosed transport typically costs 40–60% more than open, but it provides full protection inside a covered trailer. It’s the best choice if you’re shipping a luxury car, classic car, exotic vehicle, or anything with a custom paint job that you can’t risk getting nicked on the road.

For most everyday vehicles on the California to Colorado route, open transport is the smart, cost-effective choice. But if your car’s value or condition demands extra protection, enclosed is well worth the added cost.

Yes! Sherpa Auto Transport offers door-to-door auto transport service for all shipments from California to Colorado. This is the most convenient way to ship your car — no need to drop it off at a terminal or travel out of your way.
