Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our St. Augustine customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Top Line Auto Service based out of California dropped the car off. The two brothers met me. I had spoken to Joseph on the phone, and figured out what direction they were coming from, which was east from Florida. And based on where I live, I gave them the best place that I thought would be the easiest to pull up an 18-wheeler, and with a truckload of cars, to offload it and meet them to where they could easily get back on the interstate again and go about their day without having to snake through city traffic.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“It didn’t take me too long to get my date I wanted to sent my car from Crestview, Florida to Denver Colorado. I gave Shane the date May 23rd I asked for and the driver arrived on that day I asked for. The dispatcher from the company assigned for me were incredible, the lady dispatcher were on top of informing me on date when the driver will come to pick my car.”

Google
★★★★★

“Just used them to transport my mom`s old 1993 Del Sol from Inverness, FL to Pittsburgh, PA. Created the request on Sat 7 Oct. Same day I received confirmation of the booking and price (lower than the other companies I contacted). Received an email on Sun 8 Oct that they were still searching for a driver. On Mon 9 Oct, I received an email indicating a driver was located.”

Factors that affect St. Augustine Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from St. Augustine, FL. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to St. Augustine. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers extra protection from Florida’s occasional harsh weather and is ideal for high-value or classic cars.
  • Location Accessibility: St. Augustine’s proximity to I-95 makes it relatively easy to access, potentially lowering shipping costs. However, if you’re shipping to or from a more remote area away from major highways, prices may increase.
  • Seasonal Factors: St. Augustine’s mild winters and hot summers can affect car shipping prices. Summer is often busier due to tourism and relocations, potentially increasing costs. Hurricane season (June to November) might also impact pricing and availability.
  • Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger or heavier vehicles cost more to ship. Non-running cars also increase costs due to the need for special equipment. St. Augustine’s flat terrain generally doesn’t pose challenges for low-clearance vehicles.
  • Flexibility: Being flexible with pickup and delivery dates can lead to better rates when shipping a car to or from St. Augustine. Rush or guaranteed delivery services are available but at a premium.

Understanding these factors can help you plan your car shipping to or from St. Augustine more effectively. For more detailed information on car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. If you’re unsure whether to choose open or enclosed transport, our open vs. enclosed car shipping guide can help you make an informed decision.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your St. Augustine car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost savings.
  • Select strategic locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup/dropoff points near major highways like I-95 or US-1. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offer a range of dates for pickup and delivery. The more flexible you are, the better options you’ll have for cost-effective auto transport to or from St. Augustine, FL.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak shipping seasons like summer or holidays. Planning your car transport during off-peak times can result in better rates and availability.

Steps of the Car Transport Process

Navigating the Car Shipping Process in St. Augustine, FL

Shipping a car to or from St. Augustine, FL requires careful planning and consideration of local factors. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the auto transport process in the Nation’s Oldest City:

  • Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a free online quote from a reputable car shipping company. Provide details about your vehicle, desired pickup and delivery locations, and preferred shipping method.
  • Book Your Shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your auto transport service. Remember, nothing is due upfront with Sherpa Auto Transport.
  • Prepare Your Vehicle: Before the pickup date, wash your car thoroughly and document any existing damage. Remove personal items and ensure your vehicle is in good working condition. For St. Augustine’s humid climate, consider using a dehumidifier in your car to prevent moisture buildup during transport.
  • Meet the Carrier: On pickup day, you’ll meet the carrier for a vehicle inspection and to hand over the keys. In St. Augustine, be prepared for potential delays due to tourist traffic, especially around the historic district.
  • Track Your Shipment: While your car is in transit, stay informed about its progress. Most routes to and from St. Augustine will utilize I-95 or I-4, depending on the origin or destination.
  • Receive Your Vehicle: Upon delivery, inspect your car thoroughly and sign the bill of lading. Pay any remaining balance to complete the car shipping service.

When shipping a car to or from St. Augustine, consider the city’s unique characteristics. The narrow streets in the historic district may require alternate pickup or delivery locations. Additionally, during hurricane season (June to November), be prepared for potential weather-related delays in your auto transport schedule.

When planning your move to or from St. Augustine, FL, it’s crucial to consider the unique aspects of car shipping and local regulations. St. Augustine car shipping can be a breeze with the right preparation. First, remember to remove your SunPass toll transponder before transport to avoid unnecessary charges on Florida’s toll roads. Vehicle registration in Florida is straightforward, but you’ll need to complete it within 30 days of establishing residency. The St. Johns County Tax Collector’s office handles this process locally.

When using car shipping services, consider the hot, humid climate of St. Augustine. Request enclosed auto transport to protect your vehicle from potential sun damage or tropical storms.

St. Augustine, Florida Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from St. Augustine?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from St. Augustine. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from St. Augustine?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from St. Augustine?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to St. Augustine?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. Summer Considerations: From June to September, St. Augustine sees high temperatures and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. When shipping a car during this period:

“Outstanding company! I recently had death in my family and had to get my uncle’s car from Florida to Maryland. The paperwork to change ownership of the car was slow, but Sherpa Auto Transport stayed in touch with me. They called once a week to ensure me that the price we had initially agreed to would still be honored. They were very compassionate about my situation. They said as soon as I told them the car was ready, they would find a driver. Each step of the way, Sherpa Auto Transport followed up with an email. As soon as I told them the paperwork was in order, I got a call and an email within 20 minutes telling me the driver was ready to pick the car up. LMK Logistics showed up 30 minutes later. The driver was very courtesy, and I could tell he had many years of experience with loading and securing vehicles on the truck. My sister got the car within 24 hours telling her that the driver was about 30 minutes away from her home. After the car was delivered, I received another email from Sherpa Auto Transport confirming the delivery of my vehicle and to tell me that I was entitled to a free car wash on them. I have stored the name and number of this company in my phone for future reference. I highly recommend Sherpa Auto Transport to coordinate the move of any of your vehicles. You will not experience a better class of service. Thank you so much for easing my pain due to the death of my uncle. I will be using you and recommending you to others in the future.”

“Sherpa’s price lock promise was a good lock in. That was a plus on their side. They were the only ones that I saw that offered it, which might have helped me in that decision besides flipping a few coins. I spoke with the guy who set it all up for me and he sounded nice, professional and sincere, and that was also helpful. I was kept informed of where the car was and when it was expected. I paid Sherpa a $200 down payment to set the date and there was another balance of 13.50. They wanted cash on the barrelhead when I pulled in but my daughter didn’t have the cash. I could put the money in her account and she’d have to take the money out of her account to get the cash. But since I’m paying for it, it was easier that it goes directly to where I want it to go. I sent $50 while the car was en route and Eric, the driver, said it went through. I told them that I’ll do the balance when they get there, after my daughter has checked out the car. And I did. It worked fast. But at first, they were a little hesitant about that and the other people weren’t even giving me much of a choice on that either. Sherpa worked with me with the payment, the pickup and the drop-off. They were always there when I called. It was excellent. I will use them again when I need to get my car back to Florida.”

“From the moment I contacted Sherpa Auto Transport, everything was smooth and efficient. I placed a call on Friday, had a call back by Saturday morning and transport arranged by Monday. They picked the car up in FL on Wednesday morning and we had it in San Antonio, TX on Thursday night. The driver was very responsive and courteous and his truck was immaculate. I was also extremely impressed with his driving ability. We have a sloped driveway and he maneuvered the trailer deftly right up to the garage door with literally a half inch of clearance to spare. The car arrived in the exact condition it was when it left. I have never transported a car before and to say it was a little bit daunting is an understatement. After getting the run around from another carrier, Sherpa really stepped in and made things easy. They were patient, explained the process thoroughly and answered all my questions without making me feel stupid for asking. I transported a car that was my father’s (a 1964 Porsche 356) that is very special to our family and I would trust Sherpa with it again.”

“When researching companies to ship my 2012 Kia Sorento cross country Sherpa Auto Transport stood out as exceptional–by previous customers. I subsequently chose Sherpa, and they exceeded my expectations! They tell you what to expect throughout the process, and proactively followup with you at every step. Their pricing was reasonable and I even got a promised rebate for providing certain documentation at the conclusion of the shipment. The shipment went perfectly from the advanced price quote, to auto pick up, to the final delivery. Despite a snowstorm on the receiving end, my auto was delivered within 10 minutes of the agreed on meeting time– and in perfect condition. I now know first-hand why they received the top customer evaluations–they deliver on their promises & commitments! Highly Recommend for your auto transport needs from Florida!!!”

“I arranged for shipping my daughter’s vehicle from Florida to California. When I called Sherpa’s 800 number the process was fully explained, which was important to me as it was the first time I ever shipped a car. The car was picked up a day or two outside of the originally scheduled window but that was OK with me — Sherpa kept me constantly informed of the situation. The driver of the transport was very professional and took great care in loading the vehicle. The car actually arrived across the country ahead of the promised window, so the end-to-end process was timely. Also, I was able to use a credit card for payment for a $100 charge, which Sherpa promised to rebate back to me within 30 days of completion of the shipment and by mailing in a copy of the bill of lading. I received my rebate card today, about two weeks after mailing in the paperwork, so it was a promise kept on a timely basis. I would definitely call Sherpa again should the need to ship a vehicle arise.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in St. Augustine, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Florida. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
