Factors that Impact Cost

Distance is the biggest cost driver on this route, but choosing a flexible pickup window and shipping during the off-season can help keep your final price closer to the lower end of the range.

Tips and Tricks to Save

The single best way to save money on this route is to give yourself a flexible 5-day pickup window, which gives carriers more scheduling options and often results in a lower price.

How Car Shipping Works

Once you book, a vetted carrier picks up your vehicle in Louisiana, loads it onto a transport truck, and delivers it door-to-door in California — with Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise ensuring no surprise charges along the way.

State Insights

California requires you to register your vehicle within 20 days of establishing residency, and most cars must pass a smog inspection — so if your vehicle doesn’t already meet California’s strict emissions standards, plan for that before your car arrives.

TESTIMONIALS

What Sherpa’s Customers are Saying

We were moving our car from New Orleans to California for a vacation visit for three months. Sherpa offered a couple of incentives which made the difference. The quote was competitive, except Sherpa was offering a $100 rebate. They were also offering a $20 rebate for the carwash which was very good. We’ve also contracted with them to return our car in March. So, they picked up the car in New Orleans, they delivered it on the day they said they would, and we were really pleased. I’m satisfied enough that I’m gonna use them again when I return the car to New Orleans.

Sherpa was really good. They came on time, picked up my vehicle in California, and delivered it to Louisiana in the duration of time that they said that they were gonna deliver it. Once it was on the big transport truck, the driver acknowledged that they had the car, they were in transit, got to the destination, contacted the person on the other end that was picking the car up for me, washed the car, gave the car to the person on the other end, did the inspection, my daughter drove off with the vehicle, and everything’s great. There was no damage to the vehicle.
Derrick of Phillips Ranch, CA

During the process, I hadn’t closed the deal for the vehicle yet. But Sherpa was ready to go and I had to hold them back two or three times from shipping the car to Louisiana where I live. They worked with that and they were very cordial and gracious. They were on top of their game and as soon as I gave them the go, they went ahead. They picked the vehicle up on Friday evening, and they told me it will arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday. They drove it over the weekend and I actually got it on Monday. It’s a 20-something-hour drive and I couldn’t ask for a better experience.

KEY FACTORS

Factors that Affect Louisiana to California Shipping Prices

Distance

Shipping a car from Louisiana to California spans roughly 1,500–1,900 miles depending on your exact locations. That long haul means higher fuel and driver costs, making distance the biggest price driver.

Route

Most carriers travel I-10 West from Louisiana straight to California — a well-traveled, major interstate. Popular routes like this attract more carriers, which keeps competition healthy and your shipping costs lower.

Season

Winter snowbirds and summer movers create peak demand spikes. Shipping from Louisiana to California in spring or fall typically costs less. Plan ahead if you’re moving during the busy summer months to lock in better rates.

Vehicle Type

Shipping a standard sedan is the most affordable option. Larger trucks and SUVs take up more trailer space, add weight, and burn more fuel. Some carriers can’t accommodate oversized vehicles, so expect to pay more for them.

Traffic Considerations

Avoid scheduling your shipment around major holidays like Thanksgiving or Labor Day. Carriers get bogged down in heavy traffic, causing delays and higher costs. Booking during quieter travel windows keeps your shipment moving smoothly across the Southwest.

Carrier Availability

The I-10 corridor between Louisiana and California is a busy lane, so carriers are generally available. However, during peak summer months, availability tightens fast. Booking 2–4 weeks in advance ensures you get a carrier at a fair price.

Open vs Enclosed

Open transport is the most popular and affordable choice for this route. Enclosed trailers cost more but protect luxury or classic cars from the elements. For most standard vehicles making the Louisiana-to-California trip, open transport works perfectly well.

Population Density

Delivery into dense urban areas like downtown Los Angeles costs more than drop-off in a surrounding suburb. Wide, accessible roads make loading and unloading easier. If possible, coordinate a pickup or drop-off in a suburban area to save money.

TIPS & TRICKS

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

Off Season Savings

Shipping during the off-season can save you money. Avoid peak times like snowbird season. Even shifting your schedule by a few weeks can lead to noticeably lower rates from Louisiana to California.

Flexible Pickup & Delivery

Choosing a five-day window for pickup and delivery gives carriers more scheduling flexibility. That flexibility often translates to lower shipping costs, making it a simple and effective way to save money.

Hub City Advantages

Carriers frequent major highway hubs, so choosing pickup and delivery locations near busy interstates gives you more options and better rates. Rural areas have fewer carriers, which can drive your shipping costs higher.

Open Trailers

Open trailers cost less than enclosed ones and work great for most vehicles. However, if you’re shipping a luxury or classic car, an enclosed trailer offers extra protection worth the added cost.

HOW IT WORKS

How does Car Shipping from Louisiana to California Work?

Picturesque view of California

Louisiana to California car shipping is a popular interstate route that covers an average distance of 1,994 miles. Whether you’re relocating from New Orleans to Los Angeles or moving anywhere between these two states, understanding how auto transport works can make the process stress-free. Sherpa Auto Transport simplifies everything by connecting you with vetted carriers who specialize in long-distance routes like this one.

Getting started with car shipping is straightforward. First, you’ll request a quote — for this route, prices typically range from $1,050 to $1,550 depending on your vehicle type, chosen transport method (open or enclosed), and seasonal demand. Once you book, a licensed carrier is assigned to pick up your vehicle at an agreed location in Louisiana. Your car is then carefully loaded onto a transport truck and begins its journey west toward California.

There are a few unique considerations for Louisiana to California auto transport. Louisiana’s humid Gulf Coast climate means your vehicle may have surface moisture upon pickup, so a thorough pre-shipment inspection is essential. California, on the other hand, has strict vehicle emissions and agricultural inspection checkpoints at its borders. Carriers experienced on this route know how to navigate these stops efficiently, keeping your delivery on schedule. Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise also ensures the quote you receive is the price you pay — no surprises.

The typical timeline for Louisiana to California car shipping is 2 to 6 days once your carrier picks up the vehicle. Transit time varies based on the carrier’s route stops, weather conditions along interstates like I-10 and I-20, and delivery location within California. Urban areas like Los Angeles or San Francisco tend to have faster turnaround times. From booking to delivery, most customers complete the entire auto transport process within one to two weeks, making it a fast and reliable way to move your car across the country.

INSIGHTS & REGULATIONS

Louisiana to California Car Transport: State Insights and Regulations

Auto transport truck carrying vehicles

Moving from Louisiana to California means navigating some key vehicle differences. When you arrive, California requires you to register your car within 20 days of establishing residency. Louisiana does not have emissions testing, but California has some of the strictest smog check requirements in the country. Most vehicles must pass a smog inspection before registration can be completed. If your car is older or runs on a carbureted engine, it may need upgrades to meet California’s standards before your Louisiana to California car shipping journey is complete.

California also enforces tighter rules on window tinting. Louisiana allows darker tints on front side windows, while California limits front side windows to 70% light transmittance. Frame height regulations differ as well. California sets strict maximum lift heights based on vehicle weight, so lifted trucks common in Louisiana may need adjustments. Before booking auto transport, confirm your vehicle meets California’s standards to avoid surprises at registration.

Weather preparation is another important step. Louisiana’s humid, flat climate is very different from California’s varied terrain. If you plan to drive in mountain areas like Lake Tahoe or the Sierras, snow tires or chains are legally required in certain zones during winter. California law mandates carrying tire chains when signs require them. Many people using car shipping services to relocate simply store chains in their trunk as a precaution. You may also want to check your coolant levels and brake pads, since California’s hills put more strain on your vehicle than Louisiana’s roads.

Insurance is another area to review before your Louisiana to California car shipping move. California requires higher minimum liability coverage than Louisiana. Louisiana minimums are 15/30/25, while California requires 15/30/5 for property damage but strongly recommends higher limits due to dense traffic and higher repair costs. Switching your policy before arrival can save you from coverage gaps. Speak with your insurer early so your auto transport and arrival go smoothly.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Louisiana to California Vehicle Transport FAQs

Preparing your vehicle for shipping from Louisiana to California is simple. Follow these key steps to ensure a smooth and safe transit:

  • Clean your car: Wash the exterior so any pre-existing scratches, dents, or damage are easy to spot and document before pickup.
  • Document the condition: Take clear photos of all sides of your vehicle. This protects you if any disputes arise after delivery.
  • Remove personal items: Carriers are not licensed to transport personal belongings. Remove everything from the interior to avoid loss or added liability.
  • Remove or secure accessories: Take off exterior add-ons like spoilers, bike racks, or custom mirrors that could be damaged in transit.
  • Remove your toll pass: Disable or remove any toll transponders (like a SunPass or EZ TAG) to avoid unexpected charges during the long haul to California.
  • Check for leaks and mechanical issues: Make sure your vehicle is in good working order. Alert your carrier of any known issues ahead of time.
  • Keep the gas tank low: Fill your tank to no more than one quarter full. A lighter vehicle is safer and easier to load onto the carrier.
  • Have a key ready: Provide your carrier with a working key so they can load and unload your vehicle without any delays.

Yes, your vehicle is insured when shipping from Louisiana to California with Sherpa Auto Transport. Every carrier in our network is required to carry a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance.

Before your car ever leaves Louisiana, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is active and in good standing. We also require all contracted carriers to add Sherpa Auto Transport as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy — giving you an extra layer of protection throughout the entire trip to California.

Our quotes are all-inclusive, so there are no hidden fees or surprise charges. You can feel confident that your vehicle is covered from pickup to delivery. If you have specific questions about coverage, our team is happy to help. Contact us anytime.

The sooner you schedule, the better. We recommend booking your car shipment from Louisiana to California at least two weeks in advance. However, posting your shipment as early as possible gives carriers more time to bundle your vehicle with others heading in the same direction, which can lead to faster pickup times and better rates.

Keep in mind that the Louisiana to California route is a long haul — typically 1,500 to 2,000 miles depending on your exact locations. High-demand seasons, like summer, can make available carriers harder to find on short notice. If your move is time-sensitive, booking early helps ensure you get a reliable carrier on your preferred dates.

Need to ship on short notice? It’s still worth reaching out. Get a free quote from Sherpa Auto Transport and we’ll do our best to find a carrier that fits your schedule.

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

Open transport is the most popular and affordable option. Your car rides on an open-air trailer — the same type used to deliver cars to dealerships. It’s safe, reliable, and the right choice for most vehicles making the long haul from Louisiana to California.

Enclosed transport costs roughly 50–70% more, but it surrounds your vehicle in a fully covered trailer, protecting it from road debris, weather, and dust along the route. It’s the best choice if you’re shipping a:

  • Classic or antique car
  • Luxury or exotic vehicle
  • Car with a custom paint job or low ground clearance

For most standard vehicles, open transport is the smarter, more cost-effective choice. If your car holds significant monetary or sentimental value, the extra cost of enclosed shipping is well worth the peace of mind — especially on a long route like Louisiana to California.

Not sure which is right for you? Check out our open vs. enclosed auto transport guide for a full breakdown.

Yes! Sherpa Auto Transport offers door-to-door auto transport service for all shipments from Louisiana to California. This is the most convenient way to ship your vehicle — no need to drop it off at a terminal or drive out of your way.

Here’s how it works: When you book your shipment, simply provide your preferred pickup address in Louisiana and your delivery address in California. Your assigned carrier will come directly to you and deliver your vehicle as close to your door as safely possible.

Keep in mind that large car carriers can sometimes have difficulty navigating narrow streets, low-hanging trees, or tight residential areas. If that’s the case, your driver will communicate with you to arrange a nearby alternative — like a local parking lot or gas station. It’s a quick, easy adjustment that rarely adds any real inconvenience.

The bottom line: door-to-door service saves you time and effort, especially on a long haul like Louisiana to California. It’s the most popular option our customers choose, and we’re happy to make the process as smooth as possible for you.

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket.

While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.
