What Sherpa’s Customers are Saying

I had a good experience with Sherpa. Working with their rep was fine. The final cost was exactly the price that they quoted. The vehicle arrived in the same condition it was in when it left. It was a very smooth transaction. If you are looking to get a car moved from one location to another, give them a call and get a quote.

The process with Sherpa went pretty smoothly. I called their main number and then the gentleman that I talked to put me in touch with the driver. Then the driver gave me a window of opportunity of when he would be there and then the next day, he called me to tell me what time I needed to meet him. It was pretty quick. They picked it up on Saturday and delivered it on Tuesday. And that was from the DC area, Frederick, Maryland to LA, so cross-country. Our driver was fabulous. He was very fair and polite.

I was very anxious to ship our car from all the reviews regarding price changes, pick up and delivery date delays, etc…. I have to say Sherpa was seamless and flexible. The price was the price. After we received the exact pick up date, we asked about the ability to adjust the location slightly. It is the carrier’s decision but Sherpa and the carrier were accommodating. The car arrived quickly; it was a CA to MD transport Picked up on Tuesday; delivered on Sunday. Car was in great shape. Thank you, Sherpa

KEY FACTORS

Factors that Affect Frederick, MD Shipping Prices

Distance

Distance plays a major role in your shipping costs. The further your vehicle travels, the more you’ll pay. Shipping from Frederick to a nearby state like Pennsylvania will cost less than shipping cross-country to California. This is straightforward—longer trips mean more fuel, more time, and higher costs.

Route

Your route matters just as much as distance. Frederick sits near I-70 and I-270, giving it excellent access to major highways. Shipping along these well-traveled routes costs less because carriers regularly service them. If you’re shipping to a remote area far from major interstates, expect to pay more due to the extra effort required to reach those locations.

Season

Timing affects your price. Summer months (May through September) see the highest demand as families move and students relocate. Winter months typically offer lower rates, though snow can complicate routes. Spring and fall provide moderate pricing. If you have flexibility, shipping during off-peak times can save you money.

Vehicle Type

What you ship impacts the cost. Standard sedans are the cheapest to transport. SUVs and trucks cost more because they’re heavier (increasing fuel costs) and harder to load. Their size also means fewer vehicles fit on a trailer. Some carriers can’t accommodate large trucks at all, which limits your options and drives up prices.

Traffic Patterns

Heavy travel periods increase costs. The week before Thanksgiving, Christmas, and major holidays see packed roads and limited carrier availability. College move-in and move-out periods (August and May) also create bottlenecks. Plan around these busy times when possible to avoid delays and premium pricing.

Carrier Availability

Carrier availability fluctuates with demand. During peak season, you might wait two to three weeks for pickup. Off-season shipping often means pickup within a few days. Frederick’s proximity to major routes helps with carrier availability year-round, but booking early during busy periods ensures you secure a spot.

Open vs Enclosed

You have two trailer options. Open trailers are the standard choice and cost less. Your vehicle is exposed to weather but perfectly safe for most cars. Enclosed trailers provide full protection and are ideal for luxury, classic, or high-value vehicles. They cost significantly more due to limited availability and added protection.

Population Density

Where you’re shipping to and from affects pricing. Frederick offers a good balance—it’s accessible without the congestion of major cities. Shipping to dense urban areas like downtown Washington D.C. or Baltimore costs more due to traffic, narrow streets, and parking challenges. Consider meeting your carrier in a suburban area with easy access if you’re shipping to or from a congested city center. This simple step can reduce your costs.

TIPS & TRICKS

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

Off Season Savings

Save money by shipping during off-peak months when demand is lower. Avoid busy periods like snowbird season, when retirees migrate south. Even shifting your shipment by a few weeks can significantly reduce costs and ensure better carrier availability for your Frederick route.

Flexible Pickup & Delivery

Flexible pickup and delivery windows can lower your shipping costs. By offering carriers a five-day window instead of exact dates, you give them routing flexibility. This makes your shipment easier to schedule, resulting in more competitive quotes for your Frederick transport.

Hub City Advantages

Frederick’s proximity to I-70, I-270, and US-15 offers excellent shipping rates. Choose pickup locations near these major highways for better carrier access and competitive pricing. If shipping to rural areas, consider meeting carriers at highway-accessible points to reduce costs.

Open Trailers

Open trailers cost significantly less than enclosed options and safely transport most vehicles. They’re ideal for standard cars and offer excellent value. Reserve enclosed trailers for luxury, classic, or high-end vehicles requiring extra protection from weather and road debris during transport.

We recommend scheduling your car shipping pickup from Frederick, MD at least 1-2 weeks in advance. However, booking earlier gives you the best chance at lower prices and more carrier options.

Here’s why advance notice helps:

  • Better pricing: Carriers can plan routes more efficiently and bundle your vehicle with others heading the same direction
  • More flexibility: You’ll have time to compare quotes and choose the best carrier for your needs
  • Peak season buffer: During busy months (May-September), booking 3-4 weeks ahead is even better

That said, we can often arrange expedited pickup in as little as 24-48 hours if you need last-minute service. Just keep in mind that rush orders typically cost more.

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

Open auto transport is the most common and affordable option. Your vehicle is loaded onto an open-air trailer alongside other cars. It’s exposed to weather and road debris, but it’s the same method dealerships use to ship new cars. Open transport costs less and has more availability.

Enclosed auto transport provides full protection inside a covered trailer. Your car is shielded from weather, dust, and road debris. This option costs 50-60% more than open transport but is ideal for luxury vehicles, classic cars, exotic cars, or vehicles with custom paint jobs.

For most standard vehicles shipping to or from Frederick, MD, open transport works perfectly fine. Choose enclosed transport if your vehicle is high-value or requires extra protection. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

This ensures safe pickup and protects both your vehicle and property.
