What our Poughkeepsie customers say about Sherpa:
“The two gentlemen that I spoke to were very helpful, nice, and professional. I initially set up with Ty and he took all of my information. The reps lived up to what they said and they didn’t charge my car until the cars arrived, with my deposit. They were also on time picking the cars up. John, one of the supervisors out in Nevada, followed my cars all the way across the country and tracked them from stop to stop. He set up to meet us at the storage facility, so we were able to drop our cars off right at the storage facility and not to have them dropped off at a third location and then drive them to where we had to leave them until we moved out there. It was a pleasurable experience from beginning to end. My cars arrived in one piece, and I was very happy about that.”
“We were sending our car down to Florida from New York, and I read reviews on the Internet that Sherpa was a good company. We called Sherpa and they were very accommodating and we took them. The car was picked up in Poughkeepsie, New York on a Wednesday, and it got to Boynton Beach, Florida on a Friday. So, it was two days of traveling. The workers were excellent. They were very pleasant. They were very efficient. They did their job, and we were pleased.”
“Needed to have a large pickup truck transported from Arizona to South Carolina. The truck was picked up on the day we said it would be ready and it was delivered to the destination in the time frame given and in good order.”

When choosing an auto transport company, it is crucial to select the best car shipping company by considering factors such as reliability, customer satisfaction, and transparency in pricing.
Factors that affect Poughkeepsie Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Poughkeepsie, NY. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
- Transport Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping in Poughkeepsie. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers extra protection for high-value vehicles against Hudson Valley’s varied weather conditions.
- Location Accessibility: Poughkeepsie’s proximity to major routes like I-84 and the Taconic State Parkway can help keep costs down. However, shipping to more remote areas in Dutchess County might increase prices.
- Seasonal Factors: Auto transport costs in Poughkeepsie can fluctuate with the seasons. Winter weather and summer’s peak moving season may affect prices and availability.
- Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger or heavier vehicles cost more to ship. Non-running cars require special equipment, increasing the price for car shipping services to or from Poughkeepsie.
- Timing and Flexibility: Rush orders for car transport in Poughkeepsie typically cost more. Flexible pickup and delivery dates can help secure better rates.
- Route Popularity: The demand for shipping along specific routes to or from Poughkeepsie can influence prices. Popular routes may offer more competitive rates due to higher carrier availability.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Poughkeepsie car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping services to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
- Consider location: Discuss pickup and drop-off locations with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors. Choosing spots near major interstates like I-84 or the Taconic State Parkway can reduce costs, as trucks consume less fuel on these routes.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
- Be flexible: Offer a range of pickup and delivery dates. The more flexible you are, the better chances of securing a lower rate for your Poughkeepsie auto transport needs.
- Opt for terminal-to-terminal: While Sherpa specializes in door-to-door service, discussing nearby terminals with our advisors might reveal cost-saving options for your car shipping from or to Poughkeepsie, NY.

Poughkeepsie, New York Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Poughkeepsie?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Poughkeepsie. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Poughkeepsie?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Poughkeepsie?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Poughkeepsie?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?

Reviews from our New York Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied New York customers:
“We were sending our car down to Florida from New York, and I read reviews on the Internet that Sherpa was a good company. We called Sherpa and they were very accommodating and we took them. The car was picked up in Poughkeepsie, New York on a Wednesday, and it got to Boynton Beach, Florida on a Friday. So, it was two days of traveling. The workers were excellent. They were very pleasant. They were very efficient. They did their job, and we were pleased.”
“Sherpa had a good rating on Better Business Bureau and it said that Sherpa was a bit more expensive than some of the other ones, but they had a guarantee to get your car moved in the appropriate time frame. I realized that in that industry, they give you a date but it would float a couple of days here or there. So, it’s not definitive because they are just an agent. They’re not actually moving the car. I was always moving out of state, so I wanted to make sure that I had that whole week. I would still be up in New York. So, I decided to call them and get a quote. I had some lowball quotes, but most of them were at 700, 800. The rep gave me a quote of 1,900 and I said to him, “Look, don’t you guys have some more guarantees than the other companies?” But $1,900, that’s more than double. He ended up inputting the wrong destination. He put it in California rather than North Carolina. So, he went back to check it, and then he said, “Oh, wait a minute. I screwed up. Hold on one second.” He then did it. They were a bit more expensive, but I wanted my car to get down there. I was moving to North Carolina and they’re based out of Charlotte. I called Sherpa the week before and they said, “Yeah, we don’t have anything yet. But typically, these things happen pretty quickly. We’ll let you know.” My first date was a Monday, 19th of July. Sherpa sent me an email on Sunday saying that, “We don’t have a driver yet, but we’re gonna keep you informed.” That was good to know that I was in the queue. I was surprised because Sherpa called me and said, “Okay, today’s the day, and guess what, we got a driver and the guy’s going to be there in a couple of hours.” He then told me the name of the company and said the guy would call me. He would be here in a couple of hours, which was accurate. So, I was prepared. I wish they gave me a bit more of a notice, but it was fine. I was home, and then the driver came. He called me when he got to my house and those folks were from North Carolina also. And the two folks from the company were very good. I gave one my daughter’s number, where he would drop the car off in North Carolina. I asked him when they would be there. Because with these auto transports, sometimes it would take three days. He said, “No, I’m going to be down there tomorrow. I’m probably not gonna get there till 5:00.” I said, “Okay, good. My daughter will be available any time after 3:00.” The driver was very courteous. I had a nice talk with him He got down there early and called my daughter. She said, “Look, I’m not going to be home until like 2:33.” He said, “Okay, no problem. I’ll hold off.” He came, dropped the car off, we had cash for him and everything worked out good. The car was in good shape, no dents. It looked exactly like it was in New York. They got my car up without incident and they were able to communicate to my destination. Everything worked out as planned and scheduled.”
“I called Sherpa Auto Transport and I got somebody. It was a person who spoke English. That made me happy because I felt we were communicating. And we had a discussion. He told me how it all worked and how much it would cost. We talked about dates. And somehow they got back to me. They set it up. It was very smooth. They told me there would be a driver. Somebody said he would call. I got anxious about the whole thing. Because I’m in the middle of Manhattan. My car is in a garage. I can drive it where they need to. But how would I do it in the middle of Manhattan? The driver called me up and said, “I’ll be there in the blah, blah, minutes”. And I went over to the garage and got the car. And I thought, “What am I going to do? I’m going to have to park it somewhere. And then I’m gonna find a parking space.” It ended up being nothing at all. So, I waited on 55th Street. Second Avenue goes from one end of Manhattan all the way down to the other end. It goes from north to south. And he said, “I’ll meet you at 54th in a second. I’ll have my transport there.” I drove over there. And there he was with the transport. He got out. And we looked at the car. We had a chit-chat about it. And he said, “All right. See you later.” He got in the car. Drove it on the transport. I turned around, took a picture of it and left. The driver was a sweetheart. He picked the car up on a Friday. And it was delivered on a Tuesday. Whoever did it in Texas was a different person than I talked to, who was the ultimate driver. He called her a half an hour. He said he was 10 miles out. But she didn’t answer the phone. So, the driver called me. And I called her. And he called her. She lives in Austin, Texas. She lives more out in the suburbs. And she said, he didn’t want to bring it on her street because there were too many trees. She said, “I just jogged over to the, you know. It wasn’t very far.” She sent me a thing and said, “There’s this little ding here.” I said, “Oh, that’s an old one.” There was nothing. And he gave her the keys. She signed it, she gave him the check, and that was that. It was very smooth. They had their stuff together. The car got there in no time. Sherpa was great. Everybody was professional. I would recommend them.”
“In October 2020, I used Sherpa Auto Transport to ship my daughter’s car from New York to Colorado. Trying to figure out the logistics of a quick move, due to a job change, had me wondering if shipping cars was even an option. A quick search on the web — yes indeed, there appear to be many companies that will ship autos. After reading many, many reviews I came to the conclusion that, according to those reviews, every company is either the best option or the worst option to use. It’s hard to filter through what can simply be unreasonable complaints vs. legitimate issues. Sherpa seemed to rank high on most websites that offered car transport company reviews so I decided to give them a call. In a very professional and friendly call the process of shipping a car and Sherpa’s role was explained to me. Very easy to follow and understand. I decided to hire Sherpa and filled out the necessary paperwork. I should mention that this came with a high level of anxiety. I’m rolling the dice on shipping a car with a lot of unknowns. I had flexibility in the pickup and delivery and scheduling was set up accordingly. As the pickup date approached I was contacted by Sherpa with confirmation that they booked a driver. I was told the driver would contact me and we’d arrange the pickup. There were a few hiccups with the communication with the driver and this is where I really appreciated the choice I made with Sherpa. They helped sort out the issues in a very timely, professional, manner and were willing to go so far as to book another driver if my confidence in the shipper they selected was low. I relied on their past positive experience with the shipper and decided to stick with them. I’m glad I did. The driver was very friendly and the entire process was smooth sailing. The pickup and drop off process was quick and without incident. Without question if I ever have the need to ship a car in the future, my choice will be Sherpa. I’m adding 2 pictures showing my daughter’s blue Ford loaded in NY and arriving in CO.”
“My boss had to transport his old Porsche from his Dad’s house in San Francisco to his Connecticut home. So, I Googled “Best shipping companies for cars” and I came across three. There was a company that was like $400 more than the cheapest and $200 more than the most expensive. I called but I didn’t follow up with them because I didn’t like that they had a five-day pick-up window because people are busy. I chose Sherpa because I liked my conversations with them and I liked the name. Sherpas are guides up in the mountains and they guide the mountain climbers up Everest and Mount Kailash in Tibet. Also, they came in line with the other three companies for the price. Crimson, the person I spoke to, was very informative. She gave me some good feedback and gave me a lot of information because being in New York City, I really don’t drive every day. Also, they were able to get KWIK. It was the shipping company they used and I got a rave review from the person who had the car in San Francisco who told me the driver was really nice, helpful, and courteous. They picked up the car on September 25th in San Francisco and they got it to Connecticut by October 2nd. The 25th was the best day in September for the person in San Francisco so, that worked out perfectly. They gave two dates for arrival and luckily for us, it came at the right time because if it came the next day, we would have been out of town and we would have had to put it in storage. My boss would have to be home to accept it because his wife was gonna be out of town. So, their customer service was great and talking to them was a pleasure. The car didn’t come damaged. They would have taken care if anything happened to the car but why put yourself in a situation where you have to do all that. I was happy because I told my boss we should go with them. I’m kind of new to working for him, so I wanted things to go smoothly. If they had done a lousy job, I would have been upset. But I was truly satisfied and everything worked out fine.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Poughkeepsie, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of New York. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
