TESTIMONIALS

What Sherpa’s Customers are Saying

My friend moved to Florida, and he wanted his car, so I googled places to transport cars from Michigan to Florida. A bunch of companies came up, then I got a text from Sherpa. The driver called and said he was six hours away, then he called when he was an hour away. I didn`t get that phone call, but it didn`t matter. We were there anyway. Three days later, my friend got his car and he couldn`t believe it. He didn`t know I was gonna send it to him. The driver didn`t tell my friend what it was, but he didn`t say peanut butter box either. That was okay though. My friend was surprised. I would use Sherpa again, definitely.

However, I didn’t hear from them afterwards, so I called them and asked what the situation was. They said they were going to get back to me as they were just in the process of looking for a driver, and that they should have a driver within 24 hours. When they found a driver, they got back to me and told me they would ship the car within a day or two, which was exactly the time frame that they had offered. I had said I would be willing to go on an open transport, but they couldn`t get one, so they sent a closed one. Then they called me and said they were gonna foot the price difference. The driver came right to the door when he picked up the car and he spoke with us. He was wonderful. Two days later, they brought the car to my son in New York right to his door. My son observed that it was in perfect shape and then gave the driver the cash.

We had two cars to transport from south Florida to San Diego. Our sons are both marines newly stationed in CA and they needed their cars. The experience with the transporter was incredible. The dispatcher called me a few days early and communicated with me the name of river and time window. Then the actual driver called me. He was an Angel! He was so kind and friendly. His truck was top notch and IMMACULATE! I knew the cars would be safe. We paid around $1300 each ($2600 total). Considering the insurance costs, gas, cost to maintain those trucks, and time, it was worth every penny. But the peace of mind was out of this world!

KEY FACTORS

Factors that Affect New York to Florida Shipping Prices

Distance

The New York to Florida route spans approximately 1,000-1,200 miles depending on your exact locations. This significant distance directly impacts fuel costs, driver time, and overall shipping expenses, making it a premium interstate route.

Route

Shipping along I-95, the main corridor between New York and Florida, typically costs less due to high carrier traffic and efficiency. Routes to smaller Florida coastal towns or rural areas may increase prices due to limited accessibility.

Season

Winter months see increased demand as snowbirds relocate to Florida, driving up prices. Summer and spring typically offer better rates with more carrier availability. Plan ahead during peak winter season to secure competitive pricing.

Vehicle Type

Sedans and compact cars cost less to ship than SUVs or trucks on this route. Larger vehicles require more trailer space, consume additional fuel, and present loading challenges, increasing your total shipping cost by several hundred dollars.

Traffic Considerations

Major holidays like Thanksgiving create highway congestion along I-95, potentially delaying delivery and increasing costs. Booking shipments during off-peak weeks ensures faster transit times and may help you avoid premium pricing for rushed deliveries.

Carrier Availability

The New York-Florida route is highly trafficked, but winter demand can extend carrier wait times to 1-2 weeks. Off-season bookings typically secure carriers within days, offering both faster service and lower rates.

Open vs Enclosed

Open transport is the economical choice for standard vehicles on this route, costing significantly less. Enclosed trailers protect luxury or classic cars from weather and road debris but increase costs by 40-60 percent.

Population Density

Pickup from Manhattan or delivery to downtown Miami costs more due to traffic, parking restrictions, and navigation challenges. Consider meeting carriers in accessible suburbs like Westchester or Fort Lauderdale to reduce expenses and simplify logistics.

TIPS & TRICKS

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

Off Season Savings

Avoid peak snowbird season (November-March) when demand surges between New York and Florida. Shipping just a few weeks earlier or later can significantly reduce your costs, as carriers have more availability during quieter periods.

Flexible Pickup & Delivery

Choose a five-day window for both pickup and delivery instead of exact dates. This flexibility allows carriers to optimize their routes and schedules, passing savings directly to you through lower shipping rates.

Hub City Advantages

Select pickup and delivery locations near major highways in both states. Highway-accessible areas attract more carriers and create competition, lowering your rates. Consider meeting at a nearby hub city if shipping to rural Florida destinations.

Open Trailers

Open trailers cost significantly less than enclosed options and work well for most vehicles. Your car ships safely alongside others, exposed to weather like highway driving. Reserve enclosed transport for luxury, classic, or high-value vehicles needing extra protection.

INSIGHTS & REGULATIONS

New York to Florida Car Transport: State Insights and Regulations

Auto transport truck carrying vehicles

When planning your New York to Florida car shipping journey, understanding the regulatory differences between these states is essential. Florida has no state income tax, but vehicle registration and insurance requirements differ significantly from New York. You’ll need to register your vehicle with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles within 10 days of establishing residency. This process requires your current registration, proof of insurance, and a VIN verification.

One major difference involves emissions testing. New York requires annual inspections including emissions checks in most counties, while Florida has no emissions testing requirements statewide. However, Florida does enforce strict window tinting laws—front side windows must allow more than 28% light transmission, which is more restrictive than New York’s 70% requirement. Additionally, vehicle frame height regulations in Florida are stringent for modified trucks and SUVs.

Before your auto transport from New York to Florida, consider weather-related modifications. You can remove winter tires and switch to all-season options, as Florida’s climate eliminates the need for cold-weather equipment. Remove unnecessary items like ice scrapers and snow brushes. The humid, salty coastal air in Florida can accelerate corrosion, so consider rust-proofing treatments after your car shipping is complete. Regular washing becomes even more important in the Sunshine State.

Insurance considerations are crucial when relocating. Florida requires Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and Property Damage Liability coverage, which differs from New York’s liability requirements. Florida is a no-fault insurance state, meaning your insurance covers your injuries regardless of who caused the accident. Insurance rates in Florida can vary significantly by region—coastal areas typically see higher premiums due to hurricane risks. Contact your insurance provider before your New York to Florida car shipping to ensure continuous coverage and understand potential rate changes. Many drivers find comparable or lower rates in Florida, though this depends on your specific location and driving record.

Your vehicle will be exposed to weather and road debris during transit, but this is perfectly safe for most everyday vehicles.

Enclosed auto transport uses fully covered trailers that protect your vehicle from the elements. This option typically costs 50-60% more than open transport, but it’s worth considering for luxury cars, classic vehicles, exotic sports cars, or any car with custom paint work.

For the New York to Florida route, most customers choose open transport and have great results. However, if you’re shipping a high-value vehicle, the extra cost of enclosed transport provides valuable peace of mind. Learn more in our open vs enclosed auto transport guide.
