Factors that Impact Cost

Distance is the biggest cost driver on this route, but because it runs along the busy I-95 corridor, high carrier availability helps keep prices competitive compared to off-highway routes.

Tips and Tricks to Save

Offering a flexible five-day pickup window is the single best way to lower your shipping cost, as it allows carriers to fit your vehicle into an already-planned route.

How Car Shipping Works

Before your car is loaded, the driver will complete a thorough vehicle inspection and document its condition on a Bill of Lading — your most important protection if any damage dispute arises at delivery.

State Insights

North Carolina requires new residents to register their vehicle within 30 days, but you must first obtain a NC driver’s license and pass a state safety and emissions inspection before you can do so.

TESTIMONIALS

What Sherpa’s Customers are Saying

Sherpa was the 2nd company I booked with after cancelling with a randomly chosen shipper who was a nightmare from the start. I was a last minute customer for Sherpa with a narrow pickup window. From booking to pickup to delivery of my new Bronco I could not have had a more pleasant experience. They listened patiently to my concerns, were professional, friendly and efficient. There was never a problem with communication and the car was picked up and delivered in record time, in fact a day before earliest expected date. I highly recommend Sherpa auto transport to anyone. Sherpa is not one of them! Very satisfied customer.

This is the 4th year using Sherpa and I could not be happier with them. They provide a 5-day pick-up date but I have yet to wait the whole 5 days. Last Sunday I called to get a quote, and by Tuesday, the car was picked up and by Thursday my son’s car shipped from North Carolina to Rhode Island! They are quick to get shipments completed and their communication throughout the whole process is incredible. Don’t be fooled by other transportation companies. Do yourself a favor and don’t bother with the other companies, Sherpa is honestly the best for your transportation needs.

First time shipping a car and Sherpa Auto Transport made it a great experience. We transported our Lincoln Aviator from Rhode Island to Florida during a major February snowstorm, and even with weather delays their communication was excellent. They even offered to cancel due to the weather, which showed real integrity. The carrier they selected was outstanding. Our driver treated the car like it was his own, communicated perfectly along the way, and arrived exactly when promised. Sherpa may cost a little more, but it’s absolutely worth it. Highly recommend.

KEY FACTORS

Factors that Affect Rhode Island to North Carolina Shipping Prices

Distance

Rhode Island to North Carolina spans roughly 700–800 miles. That distance means more fuel, more driver hours, and higher costs. Longer hauls cost more, but the per-mile rate often drops compared to shorter routes.

Route

This route runs along the heavily traveled I-95 corridor, which is great news for your wallet. Major highways mean easier access for carriers, more frequent runs, and lower prices than rural or off-highway routes.

Season

Summer and early fall are peak moving seasons, driving prices up. Winter shipping is cheaper but can cause delays due to weather. Spring offers a sweet spot — reasonable rates and manageable road conditions along the East Coast.

Vehicle Type

Shipping a standard sedan is the most affordable option. SUVs and trucks take up more trailer space, weigh more, and are harder to load. Some carriers can’t accommodate oversized vehicles, which limits availability and raises your cost.

Traffic Considerations

I-95 gets brutally congested during holidays like Thanksgiving and July 4th. Heavy traffic slows carriers down, increasing fuel costs and delivery times. Try to schedule your shipment outside of major holiday travel windows to save money.

Carrier Availability

The I-95 East Coast corridor is one of the busiest routes in the country, so carriers are generally available. However, during peak summer months, demand surges. Booking early — at least two weeks out — helps you lock in better rates.

Open vs Enclosed

Open transport is the most popular and affordable option for this route. Enclosed transport costs more but protects your vehicle from road debris and weather. If you’re shipping a luxury or classic car, the extra cost for enclosed is worth it.

Population Density

Providence and Charlotte are manageable cities for carriers, but congested urban cores still add cost. If you’re near a dense downtown area, consider meeting your carrier at a nearby suburban spot. It can speed up delivery and reduce your final price.

TIPS & TRICKS

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

Off Season Savings

Shipping during the off-season can lower your costs significantly. Even shifting your schedule by a few weeks — especially around the busy snowbird season — can make a noticeable difference in your final quote.

Flexible Pickup & Delivery

Offering a five-day window for pickup and delivery gives carriers more scheduling options. That flexibility often translates into lower rates, since drivers can fit your car into an already-planned route more easily.

Hub City Advantages

Choosing a pickup or drop-off location near major highways in Rhode Island or North Carolina increases your carrier options. More competition along busy routes means better pricing — especially compared to rural, hard-to-reach destinations.

Open Trailers

Open trailers are the most affordable shipping option and work well for most standard vehicles. However, if you’re transporting a luxury or classic car, an enclosed trailer offers added protection and may be worth the extra cost.

HOW IT WORKS

How does Car Shipping from Rhode Island to North Carolina Work?

Picturesque view of North Carolina

Rhode Island to North Carolina car shipping is a straightforward interstate route that covers an average distance of 708 miles. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we make the process simple and stress-free. It starts with getting a quote and booking your shipment. Once booked, we match you with a vetted, licensed carrier from our trusted network. A driver will then pick up your vehicle at a location convenient for you — whether that’s your home, office, or another agreed-upon spot in Rhode Island.

Before your car is loaded onto the transport carrier, the driver will conduct a thorough vehicle inspection. This documents your car’s current condition using a Bill of Lading, which protects both you and the carrier. Your vehicle is then secured onto either an open or enclosed trailer for the journey south along the I-95 corridor — the primary highway connecting New England to the Carolinas. This well-traveled route means reliable carrier availability and competitive pricing.

When shipping a car from Rhode Island to North Carolina, there are a few key considerations to keep in mind. Weather can vary significantly between the two states, especially during winter months when Rhode Island may experience snow and ice. If you’re transporting a luxury or classic vehicle, enclosed auto transport offers extra protection from the elements. Additionally, North Carolina has multiple major metro areas — including Charlotte, Raleigh, and Durham — which are well-served by carriers, making delivery scheduling flexible and efficient.

The typical timeline for Rhode Island to North Carolina auto transport is just 0 to 3 days once your carrier picks up the vehicle. From first contact to delivery, the full process usually takes between 3 and 7 days depending on scheduling and carrier availability. With a price range of $750 to $1,125, Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise ensures the quote you receive is the price you pay — no surprises at delivery. Our team is with you every step of the way.

INSIGHTS & REGULATIONS

Rhode Island to North Carolina Car Transport: State Insights and Regulations

Auto transport truck carrying vehicles

When planning Rhode Island to North Carolina car shipping, it helps to understand how the two states differ in vehicle rules. Rhode Island requires new residents to register their vehicles within 30 days of moving. North Carolina also requires registration within 30 days, but you must first get a North Carolina driver’s license and pass a vehicle inspection. NC inspections check safety equipment and emissions, so make sure your car is in good shape before your auto transport arrives.

Each state has its own vehicle laws worth knowing. Rhode Island does not require emissions testing statewide, while North Carolina requires both safety and emissions inspections annually in most counties. Window tinting laws also differ. Rhode Island allows tint up to 70% VLT on front side windows. North Carolina requires 35% VLT or more on front side windows. If your car has heavy tint, you may need to adjust it after your move. North Carolina also enforces stricter rules on vehicle lift height, so lifted trucks or SUVs should be checked for compliance.

Moving from Rhode Island means leaving behind harsh winters. North Carolina has a milder climate, so winter tires are rarely needed. However, western NC can see snow and ice, so all-season tires are a smart choice. You can also ease up on rust-proofing treatments since NC roads use less road salt. After your car shipping is complete, consider having your vehicle serviced to adjust for the warmer, more humid climate in the Carolinas.

Insurance is another key area to review before your Rhode Island to North Carolina car shipping move. North Carolina uses a unique system where your driving record affects your insurance rate through a points-based surcharge. Rates in NC are often lower than in Rhode Island, which is one of the more expensive states for auto insurance. Notify your insurer before your move and update your policy once you establish residency. Getting quotes from NC-based providers can help you find the best local rates.

Rhode Island to North Carolina Vehicle Transport FAQs

Getting your car ready for transport from Rhode Island to North Carolina is simple. Follow these key steps to ensure a smooth shipment:

  • Remove personal items: Take out any valuables, loose items, and personal belongings from the interior. Carriers are not licensed to transport personal goods.
  • Remove accessories: Detach any exterior add-ons like spoilers, roof racks, or custom mirrors that could be damaged in transit.
  • Disable toll passes: Remove or deactivate your E-ZPass or any other toll transponder to avoid unexpected charges along the route.
  • Check fluid levels and tire pressure: Make sure there are no active leaks and that your tires are properly inflated.
  • Leave a quarter tank of gas: Enough fuel is needed to load and unload the vehicle, but a full tank adds unnecessary weight.
  • Document existing damage: Take clear photos of your vehicle from all angles before pickup. This protects you if any disputes arise upon delivery in North Carolina.
  • Provide a working key: Your carrier will need a key to move the vehicle on and off the transport truck.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

When shipping your car from Rhode Island to North Carolina, you have two options: open transport and enclosed transport.

Open transport is the most popular and affordable choice. Your vehicle rides on an open-air trailer — the same type used to deliver cars to dealerships. It’s safe, reliable, and works great for everyday vehicles. Most Rhode Island to North Carolina shipments use this method.

Enclosed transport typically costs 50% more than open transport. However, it gives your vehicle full protection inside a covered trailer, shielding it from road debris, weather, and the elements. It’s the best choice if you’re shipping a:

  • Classic or antique car
  • Luxury or exotic vehicle
  • Car with a custom paint job or low ground clearance

For most standard vehicles making the trip from Rhode Island to North Carolina, open transport is the smarter, more cost-effective option. If you’re unsure which is right for you, check out our open vs. enclosed auto transport guide for a full breakdown.
