When choosing an auto transport company, it is crucial to select the best car shipping company by considering factors such as reliability, customer satisfaction, and transparency in pricing.
Factors that affect Austin Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: The length of the journey impacts car shipping costs to or from Austin. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
- Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and affordable option for auto transport to Austin. Enclosed trailers cost about 50% more and may take longer, but they offer protection from weather and road debris for high-value vehicles.
- Location Accessibility: Austin’s central location and major highways like I-35 and US-290 make it easier and more cost-effective for car shipping. Rural pickups or deliveries outside Austin may increase costs.
- Vehicle Size and Weight: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, typically cost more to ship to Austin than standard cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
- Season and Demand: Austin’s hot summers can affect car shipping prices. Peak moving seasons, like summer months, often see higher rates due to increased demand for auto transport services.
- Timeframe: Flexible pickup and delivery dates can lead to lower costs when shipping a car to Austin. Rush or guaranteed delivery services will increase the price.
- Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are cheaper to ship to Austin. Non-running cars require special equipment for loading, which increases the cost.
Understanding these factors can help you estimate your car shipping costs to or from Austin more accurately. For a detailed breakdown of pricing factors, check out our car shipping calculator guide. - Prepare your vehicle: Remove personal items and ensure your car is clean. This reduces weight and simplifies the auto transport process, potentially leading to cost savings.
- Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for your Austin car shipping needs. Carriers may offer discounts for filling gaps in their schedules.

Austin Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping a car to Austin, TX, or preparing for auto transport from Austin, there are several local regulations and practical considerations to keep in mind. First, let’s address vehicle-specific requirements. Austin utilizes the TxTag system for toll roads, so remember to remove your toll tag before car shipping to avoid unnecessary charges. Upon arrival, you’ll need to register your vehicle with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles within 30 days. Texas requires annual vehicle inspections, so factor this into your planning.
For those moving to Austin, setting up utilities is a crucial step. Austin Energy is the primary electricity provider, while Austin Water handles water services. For internet, you have options including AT&T, Spectrum, and Google Fiber. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and, if applicable, enroll your children in the Austin Independent School District. The Austin Public Library system offers free library cards to residents, providing access to a wealth of resources.
If you’re leaving Austin, remember to forward your mail, cancel local memberships, and notify relevant institutions of your move. When choosing a car shipping company, consider Austin’s climate. The city experiences hot summers and mild winters, so ensure your chosen auto transport service can protect your vehicle from extreme heat during transit.
Austin’s major highways include I-35, US 183, and State Highway 1 (MoPac Expressway). Inform your car transport provider about any specific pickup or delivery locations near these routes. Lastly, be aware that Austin has a thriving food truck scene and numerous parks. If you’re moving to the area, exploring these local gems can help you quickly feel at home in this vibrant city. Whether you’re shipping a car to or from Austin, proper preparation ensures a smooth transition to your new adventure.
Austin, Texas Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Austin?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Austin. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Austin?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Austin?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Austin?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. Reviews from our Texas Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Texas customers:
“Sherpa had one of the easiest websites to navigate, and then they recognized right away that with my vehicle, they couldn`t give me a quote online. They told me to call. Other websites gave me a quote and then changed it later because they realized the dimensions are not quite the same. So, I appreciated the straightforwardness of Sherpa. It was super easy to schedule a pickup. My car got there in less time than I thought it would take, and then my parents on the other end said it was really easy to pick it up and it was painless. So, everything was pretty easy. Communication with the driver was not too much, thank goodness, because I wouldn`t have wanted too much either. He called me when he was about an hour away, and then he called me when he arrived. Then, on the other end, he called my parents when he was about an hour away. He got there the night before, so he called my mom the next morning and my mom was able to go and pick it up that morning at her convenience. Overall, Sherpa was easy to book and there weren`t any surprises. Everything was very clear and straightforward and I`d use Sherpa again.”
“Sherpa was rated by the Better Business Bureau very well. They had high customer ratings. They gave a reasonable price that wasn`t too high but wasn`t alarmingly low either. Most of the other companies just seemed like a scam. After I researched everything, I already knew that I was gonna go with Sherpa and hire them to do the booking part. I was transporting my wife`s vehicle so she didn`t have to drive across the country. Sherpa had a really good pledge where they offered a portion of money. If they couldn`t get the vehicle transported within the time slot that I allotted, they would add additional funding to try to increase the transporters to take it. That was the selling point for me. It was a last minute pickup. I needed the vehicle picked up within five days of contacting Sherpa and they were able to do so. The customer service and the drivers that they hired were all well. The driver called the day of and said that he was in Austin and that he was gonna be there for the day so he could pick up the car. We told him it would be a few hours, so he waited for us and picked up the car with no issues. The vehicle was picked up in the allotted time. Delivery-wise, they were ahead of schedule. The driver communicated when he was a few hours out that he was running early. Even though I wasn`t able to be there, my sister was. It was a smooth handoff.”
“I shipped two cars using Sherpa Auto Transport during the month of DEC 2020. First car I shipped was a 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback from Austin, TX to San Diego, CA. The 2nd car I shipped was a 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT from San Diego, CA to Lehi, UT. On the first car shipment, their sales agent Angie was very helpful. She took the time to explain to me the process involved in shipping a car and she also noted that Sherpa Auto Transport has a “price lock” guarantee. This to me was one of the reasons I chose to ship with them. For the 1st car shipment, it was picked up on a Monday night in Austin, TX and it was delivered in San Diego, CA early Thursday morning. I was so impressed with this shipment that I used them again for the 2nd car shipment. For the 2nd car shipment, it was picked up early morning Wed in San Diego, CA and it arrived on a Saturday morning in Lehi, UT (Friday was Christmas Day so no delivery scheduled). To sum it up…if you want a reliable company to handle your car transport, Sherpa Auto Transport is the one you should use.”
“We used Sherpa Auto Transport to ship our car from Los Angeles to Austin. We started this online, and the whole process was very smooth and seamless. They were prompt, efficient, and friendly, and the cost to me was very reasonable. We were kept informed throughout the process. The actual transport vendor that Sherpa used in this case was also excellent. Originally, I was skeptical of shipping the car. However, after this experience, I highly recommend Sherpa Auto Transport. I was referred to Sherpa through a friend who had used their service several years ago. I highly recommend using Sherpa if you ever decides to ship a car. They were definitely beyond my expectation.”
“I am truly grateful I found Sherpa Auto Transport. This was my first time arranging transportation and needless to say it was really overwhelming. I went online and found so many companies, but just had no idea how the process even worked. I contacted some and got quotes from a lot of them, but it was just frustrating because I wasn`t convinced by any. Of course, I read reviews and spoke with a few companies. Some of which were nice and other not so much. I just couldn`t decide which company to hire. What made up my mind was that Sherpa was the only one that actually took the time to explain how the process worked. They were extremely nice and patient with me. I needed to transport two vehicles from Texas to Florida in a very short period of time and not only were they able to find a driver, the price was reasonable. I also must say the driver was friendly and helped out with the inspection, he also kept in touch and delivered right on time as he promised. Felt confidant that my vehicles would arrive safe and they did. If I ever need car transport again I will book with Sherpa and I definitely recommend them!!”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Austin, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Texas. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
