TESTIMONIALS

What Sherpa’s Customers are Saying

Consumer Affairs
Sherpa was on time when they picked up my vehicle in Layton, Utah and it only took them three days to deliver it here in South Carolina. During the transport, the driver called and texted. And when he got here, we weren’t here yet. I gave him my daughter and son-in-law’s phone number, so he got ahold of them and got the car delivered. The overall experience was great and it was a fair price.

I was glad that I chose Sherpa Auto Transport to transport my Buick from Utah to Oklahoma. Sherpa was quick and efficient at answering my questions, finding a driver, and making pick up and delivery times. Once I agreed on the terms, the pick up was just a few days after. There was frequent communication during the entire six days. The car arrived without any scratches or difficulties. They carry sufficient insurance. The driver was courteous, professional and answered all my questions. I am so glad that I chose to have Sherpa transport the car rather than me driving it during this winter.

Sherpa found a good driver for us who picked up and delivered our cars within the quoted time frames. The cars arrived with no damage or scratches or anything. We shipped two Subarus from southern Utah to Washington state. Sherpa offers a military discount and a clean car refund, which I appreciate. Additionally, they also allowed us to ship 100 pounds of belongings in each of the vehicles. I would use Sherpa again if I need to ship cars within the US.

KEY FACTORS

Factors that Affect Utah Shipping Prices

Distance

Longer distances cost more to ship a car to or from Utah. However, the cost per mile often drops the farther your car travels.

Route

Shipping along major Utah highways like I-15 or I-80 is cheaper. Rural or off-highway routes add cost due to limited carrier access.

Season

Summer and snowbird seasons drive prices up. Shipping in the off-season — like early spring or fall — can save you money.

Vehicle Type

Larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks take up more space and use more fuel. Expect to pay more than you would for a standard sedan.

Traffic Patterns

Busy travel weeks, like Thanksgiving or spring break, can raise prices. Booking during lighter traffic windows helps keep your shipping cost down.

Carrier Availability

During peak season, fewer carriers are available, which drives up prices. Booking early gives you more options and often a better rate.

Open vs Enclosed

Open transport is the most affordable option and works well for most vehicles. Enclosed trailers offer extra protection but come at a higher price.

Population Density

Shipping to or from a major Utah city like Salt Lake City is typically cheaper. Remote or rural areas may cost more due to limited carrier routes.

TIPS & TRICKS

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

Off Season Savings

Car shipping rates drop during the off-season. Even shifting your shipment by a few weeks can help you avoid peak demand periods and save money. Plan ahead to take advantage of lower rates.

Flexible Pickup & Delivery

Choosing a five-day window for pickup and delivery can lower your shipping costs. Flexible scheduling allows carriers to plan more efficient routes, and those savings get passed on to you.

Hub City Advantages

Pick a location near major Utah highways for your pickup or drop-off. Spots close to busy routes attract more carriers, which means more competition and better rates for you.

Open Trailers

Open trailers cost less than enclosed ones for standard vehicles. Unless your car needs extra protection, an open trailer is a smart, budget-friendly choice that most drivers use without any issues.

HOW IT WORKS

How does Car Shipping from Utah Work?

Picturesque view of Utah

Shipping a car to or from Utah is simple with Sherpa Auto Transport. Start by getting a free quote, then book your shipment and prepare your vehicle by removing personal items and documenting any existing damage. We serve 11 cities across Utah and connect them to top destinations nationwide. Once booked, a licensed carrier is assigned to your route. Open or enclosed transport options are available depending on your budget and vehicle type. Most Utah auto transport routes take between 3 to 7 days, depending on the distance and destination.

Utah’s geography plays a role in car shipping timelines. The state’s mountain terrain and rural stretches — especially along I-15 and I-80 — can affect transit times and carrier availability. Winter weather in northern Utah may also cause minor delays. That said, major corridors like Salt Lake City to Los Angeles or Salt Lake City to Denver are well-traveled routes with reliable carrier coverage. Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise® means the quote you receive is the price you pay — no surprises. Whether you’re relocating, buying a vehicle online, or snowbirding, Utah auto transport with Sherpa is straightforward, transparent, and stress-free.

INSIGHTS & REGULATIONS

UT Car Transport: State Insights and Regulations

Auto transport truck carrying vehicles

Shipping a car to Utah means navigating some specific state rules. New residents must register their vehicle with the Utah Division of Motor Vehicles within 60 days of establishing residency [Utah DMV]. Most counties in Utah — including Salt Lake, Utah, and Davis counties — require an emissions test before registration can be completed [Utah DEQ]. If you are planning auto transport to a rural county, check whether your area is exempt, as many rural counties do not require emissions testing [Utah DEQ].

Utah law also regulates window tint. Front side windows must allow at least 43% of light in, while the rear and back windows have more flexibility [Utah DPS]. For vehicle height, frame modifications must keep the body no more than three inches above the frame [Utah DMV]. These rules matter when preparing your car for shipping or after delivery.

Utah winters can be harsh, especially in mountain areas. After your car transport arrives, consider switching to winter tires for areas above 4,000 feet in elevation. Utah does not mandate winter tires, but they are strongly recommended [UDOT]. Finally, Utah follows a no-fault adjacent tort liability system, meaning drivers must carry minimum liability insurance of 25/65/15 [Utah Insurance Department]. Review your policy before your vehicle arrives.

College Car Shipping

College & University Car Shipping in Utah

Utah’s major universities — including the University of Utah (Salt Lake City), Utah State University (Logan), and Brigham Young University (Provo) — attract thousands of students annually [University]. Before shipping your car to campus, consider these tips:

  • Parking permits: Most Utah campuses require student parking permits, which can sell out quickly — apply early [University].
  • City parking: Salt Lake City and Provo have strict residential parking zones, so research your off-campus housing area in advance [StateDMV].
  • Timing your shipment: Schedule delivery around move-in dates to avoid peak congestion near dormitories.
  • Semester breaks: Consider local auto storage facilities near campus if returning home without your vehicle, as Utah winters can be harsh [University].
Military Car Shipping

Military Car Shipping in Utah

Utah is home to several key military installations, including Hill Air Force Base (the state’s largest) and Dugway Proving Ground [DoD]. If you’re PCSing to Utah, start your auto transport early — ideally 4–6 weeks before your report date — to avoid last-minute delays [USArmy]. Here are a few tips for a smooth relocation:

  • Use your PCS orders to potentially qualify for tax exemptions on vehicle shipping [DoD].
  • Register your vehicle on base within 72 hours of arrival, bringing proof of insurance, your orders, and a valid ID [USArmy].
  • Verify base access requirements for your transport carrier ahead of delivery [DoD].

Sherpa Auto Transport works regularly with military families and understands the unique demands of PCS moves.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Utah Vehicle Transport FAQs

Preparing your vehicle for auto transport is simple. Follow these steps to ensure a smooth experience when shipping your car to or from Utah:

  • Remove personal belongings: Clear out any personal items from the interior. Carriers are not liable for items left inside the vehicle, and loose objects can shift and cause damage during transit.
  • Document existing damage: Take clear photos of your vehicle from all angles before pickup. This gives you a reliable record in the unlikely event of a dispute.
  • Keep the gas tank about a quarter full: A full tank adds unnecessary weight. A quarter tank is enough for loading, unloading, and short drives at pickup and delivery.
  • Disable your alarm: An alarm that triggers during transport can cause delays and headaches for the driver. Disable it or leave instructions on how to turn it off.
  • Make sure the car is in running condition: Inform your carrier ahead of time if your vehicle is inoperable, as special equipment may be required.
  • Retract or remove accessories: Fold in side mirrors, remove roof racks, and lower any raised antennas to prevent damage — especially if you’re using open transport.
  • Check for leaks and mechanical issues: Carriers can refuse a vehicle that is actively leaking fluids, so address any known issues beforehand.

Yes — your vehicle is insured during transport. Every carrier in Sherpa Auto Transport’s network is required to carry cargo insurance, so your car is protected from the moment it’s loaded onto the truck until it’s delivered to you in Utah.

Here’s how the coverage works:

  • Carrier cargo insurance: All carriers we work with must meet strict insurance requirements before joining our network. This coverage handles damage that occurs while your vehicle is in transit.
  • Sherpa’s added protection: For extra peace of mind, Sherpa also provides an additional layer of coverage on top of what the carrier carries.

Before your vehicle is picked up, we strongly recommend doing a thorough walk-around inspection with the driver. Note any existing scratches, dents, or damage on the Bill of Lading — this document is your official record and is essential if you ever need to file a claim.

For most shipments to or from Utah, we recommend booking your auto transport at least 1–2 weeks in advance. This gives carriers enough time to plan routes and ensures you get the best available options.

That said, timing can vary based on a few key factors:

  • Peak seasons: Summer and snowbird season (fall/winter) are the busiest times for car shipping. If you’re moving during these periods, try to book 3–4 weeks ahead to lock in better rates and availability.
  • Remote Utah locations: If you’re shipping to or from a rural area — outside of Salt Lake City, Provo, or St. George — carriers may need extra lead time to arrange pickup and delivery.
  • Last-minute shipments: Need to ship quickly? Expedited transport is often available, but it typically comes at a higher cost.

One of the best ways to protect yourself from price surprises is Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise® — the price you’re quoted is the price you pay, no matter what.

Bottom line: The earlier you book, the more flexibility you have. Get a free quote today and secure your spot before your schedule fills up.

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

When shipping your car to or from Utah, you’ll choose between two main transport methods: open and enclosed auto transport.

Open transport is by far the most popular option. Your vehicle is loaded onto an open-air carrier — the same kind of truck you’ve seen hauling cars on the highway. It’s widely available, more affordable, and perfectly safe for most everyday vehicles. The trade-off is that your car is exposed to the elements, like weather and road debris, during transit.

Enclosed transport ships your vehicle inside a fully covered trailer, shielding it from weather, dust, and road hazards. This is the preferred choice for luxury cars, classic vehicles, exotics, or any car with high sentimental or monetary value. The added protection does come at a higher price — typically 30–40% more than open transport.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Open transport: More affordable, widely available, great for standard vehicles
  • Enclosed transport: Premium protection, ideal for high-value or classic cars, higher cost

Not sure which option is right for your vehicle? Check out our in-depth Open vs. Enclosed Car Shipping Guide for a full comparison. When you’re ready, get a free quote and see pricing for both options for your Utah shipment.

Yes! Sherpa Auto Transport offers door-to-door car shipping service throughout Utah and across the entire country. That means we pick up your vehicle from your home, office, or any other convenient location — and deliver it directly to your chosen destination.

Here’s how it works:

  • Pickup: We come to your specified address in Utah (or wherever you’re shipping from) to load your vehicle.
  • Transport: Your car is hauled safely by one of our vetted, professional carriers.
  • Delivery: Your vehicle is dropped off at the destination address you provide — no terminal visits required.

In some cases, a carrier may need to meet you at a nearby open area (like a parking lot) if your street is too narrow for a large truck. But our team will always communicate with you ahead of time to find the most convenient option.

Want to know what it costs? Use our instant quote tool to get a fast, accurate estimate. And with our Price Lock Promise®, the price you’re quoted is the price you pay — no surprises at delivery.

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket.

While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.
