What Sherpa’s Customers are Saying

Google
I had a, 1 of 1, 2013 Shelby Mustang in Arizona that I needed to get to Virginia, in a enclosed trailer. Sherpa was outstanding. Picked up within the window given (3-5 days) and delivered a day earlier than planned. Plus, only had 2 other vehicles on trailer. PERFECT!!!! Don’t overthink it. Go with Sherpa. Happy and very satisfied in Virginia.

I had two vehicles shipped from Virginia to Texas with Sherpa Auto Transport, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the entire experience. Sherpa handled everything from scheduling to delivery with complete professionalism. I’ll admit I got a little nervous as the pickup date approached, but their team was reassuring and kept me updated every step of the way. Both vehicles were picked up on time and delivered to Texas in just two days, exactly as promised. The process was smooth, stress-free, and efficient from start to finish. Excellent service would highly recommend Sherpa Auto Transport and will definitely use them again!

I am very pleased with the transport of my SUV from Fairfax VA to Mpls MN. The driver was very responsive. He called me when he was getting near my house for the pickup. He parked nearby so it was easy to load the vehicle on the street. He answered all of my questions, told me what route he was taking and when he would arrive in MN. He was very accurate in his estimate. He unloaded in front of the house. No damage to the vehicle. It arrived in good shape and on time. Good Job. I’d use this service again.

KEY FACTORS

Factors that Affect Virginia Shipping Prices

Distance

The farther your car travels, the more you’ll pay. However, longer trips often cost less per mile than shorter ones.

Route

Shipping along major highways is cheaper and faster. Rural or off-the-beaten-path routes cost more due to limited carrier access.

Season

Summer and snowbird season drive prices up. Shipping during slower months, like fall or early spring, can save you money.

Vehicle Type

Larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks take up more space and use more fuel. Expect to pay more than you would for a standard sedan.

Traffic Patterns

Busy travel weeks, like Thanksgiving, can slow down delivery times. Booking during lighter traffic windows helps keep costs and delays down.

Carrier Availability

During peak season, carriers fill up fast. You may wait longer for pickup, so book early to lock in your preferred dates.

Open vs Enclosed

Open trailers are the most affordable option. Enclosed trailers offer extra protection but cost more — ideal for luxury or classic cars.

Population Density

Shipping to or from a busy city in Virginia can cost more. Dense urban areas have more traffic and tighter access for large carriers.

TIPS & TRICKS

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

Off Season Savings

Car shipping rates drop during the off-season. Even shifting your shipment by a few weeks can lead to real savings. Avoid peak moving seasons like summer and major holidays to get the best rates.

Flexible Pickup & Delivery

Choosing a five-day window for pickup and delivery can lower your shipping cost. Carriers can plan routes more easily with flexible dates, which means more options and better pricing for you.

Hub City Advantages

For pickups and drop-offs in Virginia, choose a location near major highways. Spots close to I-95 or I-81 attract more carriers, giving you more options and more competitive rates on your shipment.

Open Trailers

Open trailers cost less than enclosed trailers and work well for most standard vehicles. If your car doesn’t need extra protection from the elements, an open trailer is the smart, budget-friendly choice.

INSIGHTS & REGULATIONS

VA Car Transport: State Insights and Regulations

Auto transport truck carrying vehicles

When shipping a car to Virginia, you’ll need to register your vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency [Virginia DMV]. New residents must provide a title, proof of insurance, and a completed safety inspection. Virginia requires a state safety inspection annually, performed at licensed inspection stations [Virginia DMV]. Unlike many states, Virginia does not require emissions testing statewide — only certain Northern Virginia localities participate in the emissions program due to air quality standards [Virginia DEQ].

Virginia law limits window tint to no more than 50% light transmission on front side windows and 35% on rear side and back windows [Virginia DMV]. Vehicle frame height (lift kit) rules also apply — bumper heights are regulated based on vehicle weight class, so check compliance before your auto transport arrives [Virginia State Police].

If you’re moving to Northern or Western Virginia, prepare your vehicle for cold winters. Consider all-season or winter tires, as mountain regions like the Shenandoah Valley can see heavy snowfall [Virginia DOT]. For insurance, Virginia previously allowed drivers to pay a $500 Uninsured Motor Vehicle fee instead of carrying liability insurance, but as of July 2024, minimum liability coverage is now mandatory [Virginia DMV]. Make sure your policy meets the 30/60/20 minimums before your car shipping is complete.

College Car Shipping

College & University Car Shipping in Virginia

Virginia is home to major universities like University of Virginia (UVA), Virginia Tech, George Mason University, and William & Mary, making auto transport a smart choice for students relocating from out of state [University]. Campus parking can be competitive and costly, often requiring permits that freshmen may not qualify for [University]. We recommend confirming your parking eligibility before shipping your vehicle. When shipping, coordinate delivery around move-in dates to avoid congestion. During winter or summer breaks, consider off-campus storage facilities near your university to avoid shipping your car home twice [StorageCafe]. Pro tip: booking your auto transport at least two to three weeks in advance ensures better rates and scheduling flexibility during peak move-in seasons.

Military Car Shipping

Military Car Shipping in Virginia

Virginia is home to some of the nation’s largest military installations, including Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Naval Station Norfolk, Fort Gregg-Adams, and Quantico Marine Corps Base [DoD]. If you’re executing a PCS move to Virginia, your vehicle shipment may be partially reimbursable — confirm eligibility through your orders and the Joint Travel Regulations [DTMO]. Key tips for service members:

  • Book your auto transport 4–6 weeks in advance of your report date [MilitaryOneSource]
  • Carry a copy of your PCS orders for base gate access and registration
  • Register your vehicle with the on-base Provost Marshal Office (PMO) within 72 hours of arrival [USArmy]
  • Ensure your insurance and registration are current before shipping [DMV]

I honestly don’t know how we could be ANY happier with our experience with Sherpa! From the initial contact (with George) it was complete, fair, honest and accurate. Then the carrier they contracted with (TK Auto Trans Inc, Bek was the driver) was unbelievably great! They picked the car up Wednesday night about 7 p.m. near Fredericksburg Virginia and dropped it mid-day today, Saturday! Unreal…the car is in perfect shape, WAY earlier than expected and the price was very good. Not sure I’ll ever need a car transported again, but we’d ONLY use Sherpa if we ever did!!! THANK YOU!

I used Sherpa Auto Transport to have a vehicle shipped from Virginia Beach to Michigan. They were more expensive than all of the other quotes I received but it was worth it. I’ve heard of so many problems within the transport industry, so I didn’t want to take a chance. They found a transport within 2 days. The company they got for me picked the vehicle up at 8am and had it delivered to me at 7am the next day. It was an excellent experience.

I shipped my Volvo XC60 a distance of roughly 3,000 miles. Sherpa did a superb job with the transport. The pickup was handled by a knowledgeable person who was punctual and the vehicle used for transport was very clean. Although the delivery was made to someone in California, the process was seamless. The quote I received was very fair, and they maintained the price lock guarantee. Overall, I highly recommend their service.

Sherpa is an awesome transport company. I recommend them highly. They were very helpful in answering all my many questions and patient as I called back several times. I had a vehicle transported from Virginia to Upper Michigan. The driver kept in touch with pick up and delivery times and the vehicle arrived in exactly the same condition as when it left. The picture was taken at delivery. I would use them again, if the need arises.

Virginia Vehicle Transport FAQs

Preparing your vehicle for auto transport in Virginia is simple. Follow these steps to ensure a smooth pickup and delivery:

  • Remove personal belongings: Clear out any personal items from the interior. Carriers are not responsible for lost or damaged personal property, and extra weight can cause issues.
  • Document existing damage: Take clear photos of your vehicle from all angles before it’s picked up. This gives you a solid record if any disputes arise after delivery.
  • Keep the gas tank about a quarter full: A full tank adds unnecessary weight. A quarter tank is enough for loading and unloading.
  • Disable alarms: Make sure any automatic car alarms are turned off or disarmed. A triggered alarm during transport can cause major headaches for the driver.
  • Ensure the car is operational: Your vehicle should be able to start, drive, and brake normally. If it’s inoperable, let your carrier know in advance.
  • Retract or remove accessories: Fold in side mirrors and remove any external accessories like roof racks, spoilers, or antennas that could be damaged in transit — especially if you’re using open transport.
  • Check for leaks: Make sure your vehicle isn’t leaking oil or other fluids, as this can damage other vehicles on the carrier.

Yes — your vehicle is insured during transport. Every carrier in Sherpa Auto Transport’s network is required to carry cargo insurance, so your car is protected from the moment it’s loaded onto the truck until it’s delivered to you in Virginia.

Here’s how the coverage works:

  • Carrier cargo insurance: All carriers we work with must maintain active cargo insurance as a condition of being in our network. This covers damage that occurs while your vehicle is in transit.
  • Sherpa’s added protection: For extra peace of mind, Sherpa also provides supplemental coverage on top of what the carrier carries.

Before your vehicle is picked up, we strongly recommend doing a thorough walkaround inspection with the driver. Note any pre-existing dents, scratches, or damage on the Bill of Lading — this document is your official record and is essential if you ever need to file a claim.

For most Virginia auto transport shipments, we recommend booking at least 1–2 weeks in advance. This gives carriers enough time to plan routes and ensures you get the best available options for your move.

That said, timing can vary based on a few key factors:

  • Peak seasons: Summer and the snowbird season (fall/spring) are the busiest times for car shipping. During these periods, book 2–4 weeks ahead to lock in your preferred dates and avoid price spikes.
  • Enclosed transport: Enclosed carriers are less common, so they book up faster. Give yourself extra lead time if you need this option.
  • Last-minute shipments: Need to ship on short notice? It’s still possible, but you may have fewer carrier choices and higher rates.

The earlier you book, the more flexibility you have — and with Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise, the quote you receive is the price you pay. No surprises at pickup.

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

When shipping your car to or from Virginia, you’ll have two main transport options: open and enclosed auto transport. Here’s what sets them apart:

Open Auto Transport is the most popular and budget-friendly choice. Your vehicle is loaded onto an open-air carrier — the same kind you’ve seen hauling cars on the highway. It’s safe, reliable, and used for the vast majority of shipments. If you’re moving a standard everyday vehicle, open transport is likely your best bet.

Enclosed Auto Transport offers a higher level of protection. Your car rides inside a fully covered trailer, shielded from weather, road debris, and dust. This option is ideal for luxury vehicles, classic cars, exotics, or any car with high sentimental or monetary value. It does come at a higher price — typically 30–40% more than open transport.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Open transport: More affordable, widely available, great for standard vehicles
  • Enclosed transport: Extra protection, higher cost, best for high-value or specialty vehicles

Not sure which option is right for your Virginia shipment? Check out our in-depth Open vs. Enclosed Car Shipping Guide for a full comparison, or get a free quote to see pricing for both options side by side.

Yes! Sherpa Auto Transport offers door-to-door car shipping service throughout Virginia and across the entire country. That means we pick up your vehicle directly from your home, office, or any other convenient location — and deliver it straight to your destination address.

You won’t need to drop your car off at a terminal or arrange extra transportation. Our goal is to make the process as easy and stress-free as possible for you.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Accessibility matters. Our carriers use large transport trucks, so if your street is narrow or has low-hanging trees, your driver may ask to meet at a nearby open spot like a parking lot. This is normal and very common.
  • Flexibility is key. Our drivers will always work with you to find the most convenient pickup and delivery point possible.
  • Your price won’t change. Thanks to our Price Lock Promise, the quote you receive is the price you pay — no surprise fees at pickup or delivery.

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket.

While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.
