Moving my car from Kansas City to Seattle, Washington was quick. The truck was in Kansas City before I was. They waited until I arrived to load the car. It took them two days to travel 1800 miles. The car was delivered unmarred at 7:00 AM.

This process of shipping my vehicle couldn’t have been any better than it was. From the time I made my first call to Sherpa and spoke with a very professional and knowledgeable customer service agent lady to the gentleman who picked up and delivered my vehicle. Only thing I would’ve changed was I was only given a 30 minute heads up that my vehicle was going to be picked up. I had to leave work to make it happen but it all worked out. Thank you so much for a great experience!

Sherpa’s reps were pleasant, courteous and very professional. I was glad that they picked the car up, and that was one less problem for me. They got here when they said they would. When the car came in, my sister received it and they made a video, and it was very nice. The car was fine and the quote was a fair price. The transport took 1,700 miles and they got it there in two days. The guys were very polite and took good care of the vehicle. I was happy with it. I will do it again if I ever need the service.

KEY FACTORS

Factors that Affect Kansas City, KS Shipping Prices

Distance

Distance plays a major role in your car shipping costs. The longer the journey, the higher the price. Shipping from Kansas City, KS to a nearby state like Missouri or Nebraska will cost less than shipping cross-country to California or New York. However, longer distances often have better per-mile rates, so you may pay more overall but less per mile traveled.

Route

Your route matters just as much as distance. Kansas City, KS sits at the crossroads of major highways like I-70 and I-35, which is great news for your wallet. Routes along these busy corridors are cheaper because carriers travel them regularly. If you’re shipping to or from a remote area or small town far from major highways, expect to pay more since carriers make fewer trips to those locations.

Season

Timing is everything in car shipping. Summer months (May through September) are peak season when demand is highest, which drives up prices. Winter months typically offer better rates, though weather can cause delays. Spring and fall provide a sweet spot with moderate pricing and reliable service. If you have flexibility, shipping during off-peak times can save you money.

Vehicle Type

The size and weight of your vehicle directly impact shipping costs. Standard sedans are the most affordable to ship. SUVs, trucks, and larger vehicles cost more because they take up more space on the trailer, add weight (increasing fuel costs), and are harder to load and unload. Some trailers can’t even accommodate oversized vehicles. If you’re shipping multiple vehicles, consider shipping the sedan first to save money.

Traffic Patterns

Heavy traffic periods can increase your shipping costs and cause delays. The week before Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other major holidays see packed highways. Summer vacation season also brings more traffic. Try to schedule your shipment during quieter periods when possible. Mid-week pickups and deliveries often work better than weekends when roads are busier.

Carrier Availability

Carrier availability fluctuates throughout the year. During peak season (summer), you might wait several weeks for an available carrier, and prices will be higher. In the off-season (winter), carriers are often available within days, and you’ll have more negotiating power on price. Book early if you’re shipping during busy times, or wait for off-peak periods if you want more options and better rates.

Open vs Enclosed

You have two main trailer options: open and enclosed. Open trailers are the standard choice and cost significantly less. They’re perfectly safe for most vehicles and how dealerships ship new cars. Enclosed trailers offer protection from weather and road debris but cost 40-60% more. They’re worth considering for luxury cars, classics, or exotic vehicles. For a typical family car, an open trailer is the smart, economical choice.

Population Density

Where you pick up and drop off your vehicle affects pricing. Kansas City, KS has good accessibility with major roads and reasonable density, which helps keep costs down. However, if you’re shipping to or from a dense urban area like downtown Chicago or Manhattan, expect higher prices due to traffic, parking challenges, and tight streets. Consider meeting your carrier in a suburban area with easier access. This simple choice can save you money and make the process smoother for everyone.

TIPS & TRICKS

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

Off Season Savings

Timing matters when shipping your vehicle. Off-season transport typically costs less than peak periods like summer or snowbird season. Even shifting your shipment by a few weeks can result in significant savings, as demand drops and carriers offer more competitive rates during slower months.

Flexible Pickup & Delivery

Flexible scheduling can reduce your shipping costs. By offering a five-day window for both pickup and delivery instead of exact dates, you give carriers more routing options. This flexibility allows them to optimize their schedules, and they pass those savings directly to you.

Hub City Advantages

Kansas City’s location near major highways like I-70, I-35, and I-435 provides excellent shipping advantages. Choose pickup or delivery spots close to these routes for better carrier access and competitive pricing. If shipping to rural areas, consider meeting carriers at highway-accessible locations to save money.

Open Trailers

Open trailers cost significantly less than enclosed options and work perfectly for most vehicles. They’re the industry standard and completely safe for everyday cars. Reserve enclosed trailers for luxury, classic, or high-value vehicles that need extra protection from weather and road debris during transport.
