Factors that affect Charleston Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Charleston, SC. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but the cost per mile typically decreases for longer trips.
- Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to Charleston. Enclosed trailers, while offering extra protection, are about 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times. They’re typically only necessary for high-value or classic cars.
- Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, cost more to ship to Charleston due to the space they occupy and their weight. Compact cars are generally less expensive to transport.
- Seasonal Factors: Charleston’s mild winters and hot summers can affect car shipping prices. Summer is often busier for auto transport, potentially leading to higher costs. Hurricane season (June to November) may also impact shipping schedules and prices.
- Route Accessibility: Charleston’s location near major highways like I-26 and I-95 can help keep costs down. However, shipping to or from more remote areas outside the city may increase prices.
- Timing and Flexibility: Opting for a flexible pickup window (typically 5 business days) can result in more competitive pricing for your Charleston car shipping needs. Expedited or guaranteed pickup dates usually come at a premium.
- Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are less expensive to ship to Charleston than inoperable ones, which require special equipment for loading and unloading.
Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from Charleston, SC. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Charleston car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Open car shipping is generally more affordable than enclosed options. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates while still providing reliable auto transport.
- Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major interstates like I-26 or I-526. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your overall car shipping price.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates potential liability issues during transport.
- Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for both pickup and delivery can help you secure better rates. Consider adjusting your schedule by a few days to take advantage of more cost-effective auto transport options to or from Charleston, SC.
- Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer. Shipping your car during off-peak times can often result in more competitive pricing for Charleston car shipping services.

3. Prepare Your Vehicle: Before the pickup date, wash your car, document any existing damage, remove personal items, and perform basic maintenance. For Charleston-specific preparation, consider the humid subtropical climate. Ensure your air conditioning is working properly, as your car may sit in the heat during transport.

Charleston Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping your car to or from Charleston, SC, it’s crucial to be aware of local regulations and prepare for your move. Charleston car shipping can be a breeze with the right knowledge. First, consider removing your E-ZPass transponder to avoid accidental toll charges during transport. South Carolina uses the PalPass system for tolls, so you’ll need to sign up if you plan to use toll roads frequently.
Vehicle registration in South Carolina is straightforward. You’ll need to visit a local DMV office within 45 days of establishing residency. Bring your out-of-state title, registration, and proof of insurance. Charleston doesn’t require city-specific parking passes, but be mindful of street cleaning schedules in residential areas.
When settling in Charleston, set up utilities early. Dominion Energy provides electricity, while the Charleston Water System handles water services. For internet, you can choose from providers like Comcast, AT&T, and WOW!. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and enroll your children in the Charleston County School District.
If you’re moving away from Charleston, remember to cancel local memberships, forward your mail, and return your library books. The city is well-connected by I-26 and I-526, making it easy for car transport companies to navigate. Whether you’re moving to enjoy the beautiful beaches or leaving the Holy City behind, choosing a reliable car shipping company will ensure your vehicle arrives safely at its destination.
Charleston, South Carolina Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Charleston?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Charleston. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Charleston?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Charleston?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Charleston?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. Reviews from our South Carolina Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied South Carolina customers:
“It’s always a daunting task to ship a vehicle. It’s not always about the lowest price, though Sherpa was right in there with their pricing. Shipped from Northern California to South Carolina. Sherpa was in continual contact with us from the get go, securing a driver within just a couple days. I always knew where we were in the process of shipment with either an email or call. Driver contact was clear and professional. Pick up was on time, drop off was on time. It really couldn’t have gone better. I would definitely recommend Sherpa to anyone shipping a vehicle.”
“If you want a no hassle easy car transport this is the company!!! I reserched so many companies and read the horrible stories. I was moving from New Jersey to South Carolina and needed 2 cars transported. I called Sherpa and they picked up my cars on the day and time I asked and delivered them on the day I asked early! I was so afraid I was going to have to rent a car to go to my new job, but not with Sherpa. They are on the ball!!! I will use them again if and when I need to and recommend them to anyone who needs this service. A1 in my book>”
“I called them to transport my car from CA to SC. They were so friendly, provided all information, assured me they will not increase the price after confirming it and they will cover up to 300$ for any rate increase which was a relief after I had terrible experience with auto transport company that increased my rate one day before shipping dramatically (from $1100 to $1800) and refused to refund my deposit and on top billed me $500. I highly recommend using Sherpa. They assigned transport company within 24 hours that was very reliable and I received my car in excellent condition in a week. Again, highly recommended to use them.”
“With so many horror stories and lack of regulations around motor transport companies, I searched over a dozen companies before choosing Sherpa Auto Transport. Reading Yelp reviews helped me narrow my choices because I trust the reviews on Yelp more than other platforms (some transport companies touted good Google reviews but their Yelp reviews were bad). Even upon choosing, I was so nervous but Dan at Sherpa assured me he would make the process a smooth one. I purchased a vehicle and Sherpa contracted with M&G Motors LLC to deliver my vehicle. M&G picked up my vehicle on 9/29 from Leesville, SC and delivered it to me on 9/30 to Wixom, MI. M&G was very responsive throughout the transport commute. Sherpa provided me with a rebate and a free car wash upon delivery of my vehicle. Thank you Sherpa for making the transport of my purchased vehicle a positive and stress free experience. I am not much of a Yelp reviewer, but I wanted to take the time to highlight my experience with Sherpa so that it will assist someone else who is nervously selecting a motor transport company.”
“Was super worried about shipping my car from SC to AZ as I had read so many horror stories. Sherpa made sure my car arrived on time ( early actually) with no damage. They were super quick to respond to anything I emailed or called about. The price was very reasonable and the price they quoted was what I paid. The only thing that could have been btr was timing, but now that I understand how the industry works I understand why they can only give a time frame and not exact dates. I’ve already recommended them to a friend, and will continue to use them when shipping my car.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Charleston, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of South Carolina. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
