What Sherpa’s Customers are Saying

I was a bit nervous purchasing a car in California sight unseen and having it transported to North Carolina. I connected with Sherpa on-line to receive a quote and timing. I was pleasantly surprised to not only receive the quote in email but a phone call to review the quote and details. Long story short the team at Sherpa was always available to answer any questions I had along the way and very transparent throughout the entire process. The car was picked up and delivered within the window of time promised and our driver was courteous, professional and extremely kind. #bestserviceever 🙂

It was my first time shipping a car so I was very nervous! I had a great experience with Sherpa Auto since the first call they were very nice and patience explaining all the process. They always answered my calls and kept me updated with the details. Sherpa had a good price to send my car from Texas to North Carolina, the best price compared to other companies and the best thing that they do it is that they lock your price so there is never extra charges or fees making sure the car was transported with an excellent carrier and with a fair price. The driver was always responsive and very helpful. My car made it safe and sound to the new destination and I would definitely contact Sherpa again if I need to ship a car!

Sherpa made me feel comfortable explaining the process in detail, I why I should go with them instead of the other companies. I am glad I listened. Saved a lot of trouble vetting other companies.

KEY FACTORS

Factors that Affect North Carolina Shipping Prices

Distance

Longer distances naturally increase shipping costs. A cross-country transport from North Carolina to California costs significantly more than a regional move to Virginia or Georgia.

Route

Major highways like I-95 and I-40 offer cheaper rates due to frequent carrier traffic. Remote rural routes require special trips, increasing your overall cost.

Season

Summer and fall see higher demand for car shipping, driving up prices. Winter typically offers lower rates, though weather may cause delays in some regions.

Vehicle Type

Larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks cost more to ship. They take up more trailer space, add weight, and consume more fuel during transport.

Traffic Patterns

Holiday periods and peak travel times increase shipping costs. Booking during slower periods can save you money and ensure faster pickup and delivery times.

Carrier Availability

During busy seasons, fewer carriers are available, potentially delaying your shipment. Booking early helps secure better rates and faster service for your vehicle.

Open vs Enclosed

Open trailers are the most affordable option for standard vehicles. Enclosed trailers cost more but provide superior protection from weather and road debris.

Population Density

Urban areas like Charlotte and Raleigh may have higher costs due to traffic and access challenges. Suburban and rural locations can sometimes offer better rates.

TIPS & TRICKS

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

Off Season Savings

Shipping during off-peak seasons costs less. Even waiting a few weeks can help you avoid busy periods and save money. Plan ahead to take advantage of lower demand times.

Flexible Pickup & Delivery

Offering a five-day window for pickup and delivery reduces costs. Flexible scheduling lets carriers optimize their routes, and they pass those savings directly to you. Consider being flexible with dates.

Hub City Advantages

Choose pickup locations near major North Carolina highways like I-95, I-85, or I-40. Highway-accessible spots attract more carriers, creating competition that drives down rates and speeds up service.

Open Trailers

Open trailers cost less than enclosed options for standard vehicles. They’re safe and reliable for most cars. Save the enclosed trailer expense for luxury or classic vehicles only.

HOW IT WORKS

How does Car Shipping from North Carolina Work?

Picturesque view of North Carolina

Car shipping to and from North Carolina is a straightforward process that typically takes 1-5 days for delivery, depending on your specific route and distance. As a major hub serving 78 cities across the state, North Carolina offers excellent auto transport connectivity for both open and enclosed carrier options. The process begins when you request a quote and book your shipment with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Once scheduled, a professional driver will pick up your vehicle from your desired location in North Carolina. Your car will be inspected and loaded onto a carrier for safe transport. During transit, your vehicle is fully insured and tracked. North Carolina’s central East Coast location and major highways like I-95, I-85, and I-40 make it an ideal state for efficient auto transport services.

When shipping a car to or from North Carolina, consider seasonal weather patterns and peak moving seasons that may affect timing. The state’s diverse geography—from coastal areas to mountain regions—means pickup and delivery times can vary. To ensure smooth car shipping, prepare your vehicle by removing personal items, documenting its condition with photos, and ensuring it’s in running condition. Most auto transport companies require only a quarter tank of gas for safety during transport.

INSIGHTS & REGULATIONS

NC Car Transport: State Insights and Regulations

Auto transport truck carrying vehicles

When planning car shipping to North Carolina, understanding state vehicle requirements helps ensure a smooth transition. New residents must register their vehicle within 60 days of establishing residency [NCDMV]. The process requires a title, proof of insurance, and passing a safety inspection at an authorized station. North Carolina requires annual safety inspections for all vehicles, and emissions testing applies in 22 counties including Charlotte and Raleigh areas [NCDMV].

North Carolina follows specific vehicle regulations that differ from other states. Window tinting laws permit 35% light transmission on front side windows, while any darkness is allowed on rear windows [NCGS 20-127]. The state also enforces lift and frame height restrictions for modified vehicles to ensure road safety [NCGS 20-135.4].

For auto transport to North Carolina, consider the mild climate when preparing your vehicle. While coastal areas experience humidity and salt air that can affect vehicle exteriors, mountain regions may see winter weather requiring seasonal tire considerations. North Carolina is a “fault” insurance state, meaning drivers must carry minimum liability coverage of 30/60/25 [NCDOI]. When coordinating car shipping services, verify your vehicle meets inspection requirements before arrival to avoid delays in registration. These preparations make relocating with your vehicle to North Carolina straightforward and hassle-free.

College Car Shipping

College & University Car Shipping in North Carolina

North Carolina hosts several major university hubs, including Chapel Hill (UNC), Raleigh (NC State), Durham (Duke), and Charlotte (UNC Charlotte), making it a popular destination for student vehicle shipping [University]. Before transporting your car, research campus parking permits early—many schools have limited spots and waitlists [University]. Students moving to North Carolina should consider timing their vehicle shipment to arrive after securing housing and parking arrangements. Pro tip: If you won’t need your car during winter or summer breaks, explore off-campus storage facilities near universities, which often offer student discounts and climate-controlled options [LocalStorage]. Sherpa Auto Transport can coordinate delivery directly to your campus area or nearby storage location, ensuring a seamless transition to college life in the Tar Heel State.

Military Car Shipping

Military Car Shipping in North Carolina

North Carolina hosts several major military installations, including Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg), Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base [DoD]. Service members receiving PCS orders to North Carolina should schedule auto transport 2-4 weeks in advance to ensure availability during peak moving seasons [USTRANSCOM]. Upon arrival, military personnel have 30 days to register their vehicles with the North Carolina DMV and obtain a state driver’s license [NCDMV]. Active duty members are exempt from vehicle property taxes and can maintain their home state registration if preferred [NCDMV]. When shipping to base housing, confirm delivery access with your installation’s transportation office, as some bases require advance coordination for commercial carriers [DoD]. Sherpa Auto Transport works extensively with military families, offering flexible scheduling and understanding the unique challenges of PCS moves.

Sherpa gave me the best price and when a mistake was made, they redid the offer. I spoke to Isaac and he was a really nice gentleman. He spoke to his people and they kept my previous quote, which was a few hundred dollars less. Anytime I called and asked for him specifically, they would get him for me. It was a great experience. Also, the driver was very careful about my property and I appreciated that. He was able to get that car off exactly where I wanted it. I was impressed. Anybody that wants a car towed back should go to Sherpa.

Yelp
I dealt with George at Sherpa, he was amazing! He took care of the details for shipping my grandson’s car from NC to CA. He just completed his school in the USAF and flew out to his first duty station. The price was great and so was all the service. There were two fellas that came to pick up my grandson’s car. They were very nice and knew what they were doing, from loading it to preparing the Bill of Lading. 3 days later, his car arrived in CA! I was shocked! It was in perfect condition and he was thrilled! Thank you Sherpa for making this stressful time a piece of cake! A+ all the way!

I`ve had to ship cars back and forth for my kids to college. I did a search and picked Sherpa. Everything was very good. The quote was straight and they could meet the dates that I had, which were very specific. Sherpa is the front end and they connect you with the driver. All of that went very smoothly. The pickup was in Durham, North Carolina and the delivery was in California. My driver was exactly on time and so was the delivery. There were no surprises. The communication and the instructions were good. The follow-up was great and my car made it safe.

Too bad there’s not 10 stars, because I would definitely give this company 10 stars!! The whole process of getting my vehicle from Missouri to North Carolina was a very smooth transaction. Distance: Longer routes cost more. Shipping within the state or to nearby states is less expensive than cross-country transport.

Vehicle size: Larger vehicles like trucks and SUVs cost more to ship than sedans due to their weight and space requirements.

Season: Prices tend to rise during peak moving seasons (summer and early fall) and drop during slower winter months.

Auto transport times vary based on distance and route. Most shipments take 1-10 days to complete.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Local/Regional routes (under 500 miles): 1-3 days
  • Mid-range routes (500-1,500 miles): 3-5 days
  • Cross-country routes (over 1,500 miles): 5-10 days

For North Carolina shipments, expect 2-3 days to nearby states and 5-7 days for coast-to-coast transport.

Several factors can affect timing:

  • Weather conditions
  • Traffic and road closures
  • Carrier route and pickup schedule
  • Time of year (peak season is busier)

At Sherpa Auto Transport, we provide estimated delivery windows when you book. We’ll keep you updated throughout the process so you know exactly when your vehicle will arrive.

Yes, your vehicle is fully insured during transport. All carriers in the Sherpa Auto Transport network are required to carry cargo insurance, which covers your vehicle while it’s being shipped to or from North Carolina.

For added peace of mind, Sherpa Auto Transport also provides supplemental coverage on top of the carrier’s insurance. This extra layer of protection ensures you’re covered throughout the entire shipping process.

Before transport begins, you’ll receive proof of insurance from your assigned carrier. We recommend reviewing this documentation and taking photos of your vehicle before pickup to document its condition.

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

We recommend booking your auto transport 1-2 weeks in advance for most shipments to or from North Carolina. This gives us time to find the best carrier for your route and schedule.

However, timing can vary based on these factors:

  • Peak seasons: Book 2-4 weeks ahead during summer months (May-August) and snowbird season (October-November and March-April) when demand is higher
  • Flexible dates: If your schedule is flexible, you can sometimes book with less notice
  • Rural areas: Pickups or deliveries in remote North Carolina locations may need extra time
  • Last-minute needs: We can often accommodate rush shipments, though options may be limited and rates higher

The earlier you book, the more carrier options you’ll have and the better rates you’ll typically get. Contact us as soon as you know your moving dates to secure the best service.

Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise means the price you see is the price you pay. When you book your car shipment to or from North Carolina, your quoted rate is locked in and will not change.

Unlike some car shipping companies that add surprise fees or raise prices after you’ve booked, Sherpa guarantees your rate stays the same from quote to delivery. No hidden costs. No last-minute increases. Just honest, transparent pricing you can count on.

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket.

While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.
