What our Malibu customers say about Sherpa:
“The driver was from a different company, and the fellow who showed up was delayed at the Port of Los Angeles. He phoned us and told us about it. He kept us informed. So, it was not a surprise that he came a few hours later than expected. But he did show up. He was absolutely terrific. He was kind and patient. He was efficient. When the car arrived to our daughter, she had very nice things to say about his performance as well. So, we were very happy.”
“Sherpa is a great company to deal with They found a transporter for my 65 chevelle malibu, however when I received my vehicle the battery was dead where he had turned the ignition to accessory instead of off…had to buy a new battery. Sherpa stood by their guarantee. Also, the company was extremely nice.”
“I was making a big move from Michigan to California fresh out of college. Young, scared, and confused, I often found myself overwhelmed with the many vehicle transport options available. Frantically, I googled “best auto transport companies for cross-country moves” and stumbled upon Sherpa in a Forbes article. After retrieving a quote for nearly every company in the article, I instantly put Sherpa at the top of my list because of their promised flat-rate policy.”

Note: These figures are based on Sherpa’s actual data from the past 12 months of vehicle shipments to or from Malibu, CA. When choosing an auto transport company, it is crucial to select the best car shipping company by considering factors such as reliability, customer satisfaction, and transparency in pricing.
Factors that affect Malibu Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: The length of the journey from or to Malibu, CA significantly impacts car shipping costs. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
- Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your car affect shipping rates. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks cost more to transport than compact cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
- Transport Method: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from Malibu. Enclosed transport, while pricier, offers extra protection from Malibu’s coastal elements and is ideal for luxury or classic cars.
- Season: Summer is peak season for auto transport in Malibu, with many people relocating or shipping vehicles to enjoy the beautiful beaches. Expect higher rates during this time compared to the cooler months.
- Route Accessibility: Malibu’s location along the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) can affect shipping costs. While scenic, the winding coastal road may require specialized transport, potentially increasing prices.
- Delivery Timeframe: Flexible pickup and delivery dates often result in lower car shipping costs. Expedited services for quicker transport to or from Malibu will increase the price.
- Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to ship. Inoperable cars require special equipment for loading and unloading, increasing the cost of auto transport to or from Malibu.
Understanding these factors can help you estimate your car shipping costs more accurately. For a detailed breakdown of pricing factors, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Malibu car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundled shipments along the scenic Pacific Coast Highway.
- Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates when transporting your vehicle to or from Malibu. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some luxury cars, open shipping offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
- Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major routes like US-101 or I-405. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates potential liability issues during transport.
- Be flexible: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for your Malibu car transport. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of off-peak shipping times and potential cost savings.
- Consider seasonal factors: Malibu’s popularity as a beach destination can affect car shipping rates. Planning your transport during less busy times may result in more competitive pricing for your auto transport needs.

Malibu Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When planning your car shipping to Malibu, CA, it’s essential to consider local regulations and practical aspects of relocating. Malibu, known for its beautiful beaches and luxurious lifestyle, has some unique considerations for new residents and their vehicles.
First, let’s address vehicle-specific requirements. California has strict emissions standards, so ensure your car meets these before shipping. Upon arrival, you’ll need to register your vehicle with the California DMV within 20 days. The process involves completing a registration application, providing proof of ownership, and passing a smog check for most vehicles.
Malibu doesn’t have toll roads, but nearby Los Angeles does. If you have a FasTrak transponder from another state, remove it before auto transport to avoid unexpected charges. You can easily obtain a new California FasTrak once settled.
Parking in Malibu can be challenging, especially near beaches. Many areas require permits, so check with your new neighborhood or property manager about obtaining necessary passes.
When moving to Malibu, set up utilities early. Southern California Edison provides electricity, while Las Virgenes Municipal Water District handles water services. For internet, providers like Spectrum and Frontier are popular choices.
Don’t forget to update your voter registration and driver’s license within 10 days of establishing residency. The Malibu Library offers free library cards to residents, providing access to a wealth of resources.
Malibu’s Mediterranean climate means mild, dry summers and cool winters. When shipping a car here, consider the salty ocean air’s potential impact on your vehicle. Regular washing can help protect against corrosion.
Finally, familiarize yourself with Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), Malibu’s main thoroughfare. It offers stunning ocean views but can get congested, especially during summer months. When your car transport arrives, take some time to explore this iconic road and your new coastal paradise.
Malibu, California Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Malibu?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Malibu. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Malibu?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Malibu?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Malibu?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Malibu
When planning car shipping to or from Malibu, CA, it’s crucial to consider the unique seasonal factors that can impact your auto transport experience. Malibu’s Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm, dry summers and mild winters, offers generally favorable conditions for car shipping services year-round. However, there are still important considerations to keep in mind.
During the summer months (June to September), Malibu experiences warm temperatures and minimal rainfall. If you’re scheduling car transport during this period, consider these tips:
- Place a sunshade under your car’s windshield to protect the interior from intense sunlight.
- Remove any heat-sensitive items from your vehicle to prevent melting or damage.
- Be aware that summer is a peak season for Malibu car shipping, so book early to secure your preferred dates.
Winter in Malibu (December to March) is mild, but occasional rainstorms can occur. When shipping a car during this season:
- Ensure your vehicle is prepared for potential moisture exposure during transport.
- Choose pickup and drop-off locations on level ground to avoid any issues with wet or slippery surfaces.
- Be flexible with your schedule, as rare winter storms may cause slight delays in auto transport services.
It’s also important to consider peak times for car shipping in Malibu. The city sees increased traffic during summer months and holiday weekends when tourists flock to its beautiful beaches. To avoid potential delays and higher rates, consider scheduling your car transport during off-peak seasons or mid-week.
By keeping these seasonal factors in mind, you can ensure a smooth and efficient car shipping experience to or from Malibu, CA. Always consult with your chosen car shipping company for the most up-to-date advice on transporting your vehicle to this beautiful coastal city.
Car Shipping for College Students in Malibu, California
When considering car shipping to Malibu for college, it’s crucial to understand the parking situation. Pepperdine University, the main college in Malibu, requires students to register their vehicles and purchase parking permits. On-campus parking is available, but spaces can be limited. Most off-campus apartments offer parking, but it’s wise to confirm this before signing a lease. For students planning to ship a car and leave it during breaks, Pepperdine provides long-term parking options. However, it’s essential to inform campus security in advance. While snow isn’t a concern in Malibu’s mild climate, students should ensure their vehicles are prepared for coastal conditions. Before arranging auto transport to Malibu, verify that your roadside assistance coverage extends to California. Lastly, consider the convenience of car shipping services for stress-free transportation to and from campus, especially for out-of-state students.
Reviews from our California Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied California customers:
“They were recommended to me and I was very happy with them. I transported a 2019 F-150 and a 2017 Malibu. They hooked me up with K1 and they got here within three days. The rep that I dealt with was wonderful. He always kept me in communication with what was going on and how quickly he can get me somebody. They told me the 900 down and the $1,500, and there was no change in price at all. I paid in cash right when the transport got there. It got here a couple hours before my flight got in which was perfect. My ex-husband received the vehicles and he inspected them. They were in perfect condition.”
“I locked in with Sherpa to transport my SUV from Boston to California. I was looking for transport within a day or two from the day I locked in. Within literally 30 minutes I got a call saying a transport had chosen my car and I should hear from them within 24 hours. I heard from the transport within 2 hours. The gentleman from *********************** made all the arrangements with me. My car was to be picked up the next day and I would get a call 30 minutes prior to pick up to give me time to get to an arranged spot for pick up that I chose. Sure enough the next day I got the call and brought the car to the pick up point I requested. The man I met was great, he checked the car over, took his pictures and loaded it up. I was given all the paperwork Sherpa said I would get and the car was on its way.The car was supposed to be delivered to California between July 4-6. I was told I would receive a call 24 hours out and then again 30 minutes out. I was given contact information to check on my car if necessary and instructions on final payment (Sherpa`s fee paid after they secured *********************** and ********** fee upon delivery). On July 3 I received the call my car was coming on July 4 and then on July 4 I received the call that it was 30 minutes away. ******* was my driver with ***********************. When he arrived, he quickly and safely unloaded my car, told me to check it out and handled all the paperwork. He was on his way within 20-30 minutes. And I have to say he was very friendly and gave us all the time we needed to check over the car. My car arrived in 4-5 days and I`m happy to report there were no problems whatsoever. We took it for the car wash that comes along with Sherpa`s deal and we hit the road again as planned. I have to say, Sherpa`s people were great. They were helpful, professional and just plain nice! They secured a transport in record time and that transport was just as helpful, professional and awesome at what they did!!! I would HIGHLY recommend Sherpa to anyone and everyone and I would also highly recommend ***********************!.. The ease of this whole process was amazing! Thank you Sherpa and thank you ***********************!”
“I wanted to ship a car to a new house. We had two cars and we can only drive one. I had a Toyota Mirai shipped through Sherpa. I liked their price and the customer service was good. I called up, talked to the person, and he knew what he was talking about and was clear about what things would happen. It was business-like. They gave me all the details. There was nothing that was left to the imagination. I knew exactly what things would be. The quote was reasonable and better than the others. Plus, I was impressed with the straightforward means of communication. The delivery didn`t take long. They were two brothers who were driving nonstop across the country. I had to find someplace on the receiving end to take it for me because I couldn`t beat the car. So, I contacted the local Toyota dealership and I said, “Okay, I gotta have this car delivered someplace. Can you guys do that for me?” They agreed to it and I told them it`s a Mirai and a Mirai is a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, which isn`t sold outside the state of California because there`s no hydrogen here yet. Now, there`s gonna be hydrogen here, but it`s not here yet. And had I tried to sell it, I would have lost money or had to turn it back and I didn`t know what kind of hit that would take on my credit, which I didn`t wanna do. So I said, “Okay. Well, I`ll ship the car here and we`ll just wait for it to be installed.” The car was delivered there after hours, which was unavoidable but the keys were discovered where they`re supposed to be. They put it inside their service bay because everything`s indoors because it gets cold here. So, it was inside the service bay. When I arrived here, I was able to go pick it up. It had some road dirt but other than that, it was as good as when I dropped it off. The drivers were hard-driving fellows. They communicated with me well. I didn`t have any way of having the car delivered to a person. So, finding a dealership and the fact that they dropped it off right there at the front of the dealership and then put the keys someplace secure was good. Sherpa got the job done. The car is here and it wasn`t damaged or hurt in any way. The guy who picked up the car was a very pleasant fellow to work with. He photographed the car, took pictures, looked around it and if he saw something, he showed it to me. There was a very small pit someplace near a license plate. I don`t know what it was, but he pointed that out. I said, “No, I completely agree. It`s not a problem.” He went off and he took the car up to San Bernardino where these two brothers took over and they were off. Overall, they did a good job.”
“We shipped a Chrysler 200 from Palm Springs, California to Chicago, Illinois. I looked at Sherpa because I got a good track record with them. I had three good experiences in a row. The quote I got was very fair. I like that they have a program whereby for $100 more, you can tighten the pickup and delivery window, which is really important when you`re traveling and you are gonna get on an airplane. You don`t want your car not picked up the night before you`re traveling on the plane. They have a really nice and flexible program that way. The final cost was the same. In relation to the quality of service, it was a very good value. Sherpa is the broker and they found the transport company. The dispatcher from that company provided an excellent level of customer service. The driver was a little over-ambitious. He wanted to pick up the car one day before the window and deliver the car one day before the other side of the window. You`d rather have that than saying it`s gonna be delayed by three days. I was able to call the dispatcher at the shipping company. He called the driver and let him know what was going on. There was a little bit of a language issue between the driver and me. His English was not 100% but that`s okay. He took care of my car and it was fine. I wished I didn`t have to put the two clarification calls into the dispatcher. But in the whole scheme of things, that was minor. The car got dirty on the road but there were no scratches and bumps. It started up right away. All`s well that ends well. I`ll be using Sherpa again the next time I have to transport the car. The company that they used for shipping was quite good, especially their dispatcher.”
“Sherpa`s pricing was very competitive, and the little extra was throwing in the free carwash at the end of the trip. I contacted them to see if they met my schedule. It seemed like they were able to line up pretty closely to the schedule. I was impressed with the rep that I initially spoke to. I didn`t need to call on him for urgent needs, but it sounded like he would be there if I needed guidance or assistance. He gave me a direct number and said, “If you need anything, just give me a call.” Sherpa had a small provider pick the vehicle up and take it to the larger vehicle. The guy was nice and punctual. He took very good care of getting the car on his trailer and towing it off. As far as that point, I was happy. They gave my daughter a call when they said they were going to call back. So my daughter ended up having the number of the driver. She`s in the Coast Guard. She wanted to make sure she was going to be available because she has to get approval to be gone from the workspace. So she was in communication with the driver and that all went perfectly.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Malibu, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of California. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
