What Sherpa’s Customers are Saying

Consumer Affairs
I was a bit nervous purchasing a car in California sight unseen and having it transported to North Carolina. I connected with Sherpa on-line to receive a quote and timing. I was pleasantly surprised to not only receive the quote in email but a phone call to review the quote and details. Long story short the team at Sherpa was always available to answer any questions I had along the way and very transparent throughout the entire process. The car was picked up and delivered within the window of time promised and our driver was courteous, professional and extremely kind. #bestserviceever 🙂

This is the 4th year using Sherpa and I could not be happier with them. They provide a 5-day pick-up date but I have yet to wait the whole 5 days. Last Sunday I called to get a quote, and by Tuesday, the car was picked up and by Thursday my son’s car shipped from NC to RI! They are quick to get shipments completed and their communication throughout the whole process is incredible. The drivers are also awesome, I was constantly getting updates from them. Don’t be fooled by other transportation companies, they will give you an estimate a lot lower but will result in a horrible experience. Do yourself a favor and don’t bother with the other companies, Sherpa is honestly the best for your transportation needs.

Yelp
I dealt with George at Sherpa, he was amazing! He took care of the details for shipping my grandson’s car from NC to CA. He just completed his school in the USAF and flew out to his first duty station. The price was great and so was all the service. There were two fellas that came to pick up my grandson’s car. They were very nice and knew what they were doing, from loading it to preparing the Bill of Lading. 3 days later, his car arrived in CA! I was shocked! It was in perfect condition and he was thrilled! Thank you Sherpa for making this stressful time a piece of cake! A+ all the way!

KEY FACTORS

Factors that Affect North Carolina Shipping Prices

Distance

The further you ship your car, the more it costs. However, longer trips often have a lower cost-per-mile than shorter ones.

Route

Shipping along major highways is cheaper than rural routes. More carriers travel busy corridors, which keeps prices competitive and transit times shorter.

Season

Demand spikes in summer and early spring, driving prices up. Shipping in the off-season — like fall or winter — can save you money.

Vehicle Type

Larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks take up more space and use more fuel. Expect to pay more than you would for a standard sedan.

Traffic Patterns

Busy travel weeks, like the days before Thanksgiving, slow carriers down. Booking during lighter traffic windows can lower your cost and speed up delivery.

Carrier Availability

During peak season, fewer carriers are available, which pushes prices up. Booking early gives you more options and often a better rate.

Open vs Enclosed

Open trailers are the most affordable option. Enclosed trailers offer extra protection for luxury or classic cars but come at a higher price.

Population Density

Shipping to or from a busy city can cost more due to traffic and access limits. Suburban or rural pickups may require extra fees for door-to-door service.

TIPS & TRICKS

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

Off Season Savings

Car shipping rates drop during the off-season. Even shifting your shipment by a few weeks can help you avoid peak demand periods and save a noticeable amount on your total cost.

Flexible Pickup & Delivery

Opting for a five-day pickup and delivery window gives carriers more scheduling options. That added flexibility often leads to lower rates, since carriers can plan more efficient routes.

Hub City Advantages

Choose a pickup or drop-off location near major highways in North Carolina. Spots close to interstates like I-85 or I-95 attract more carriers, which means more competition and better pricing for you.

Open Trailers

Open trailers cost less than enclosed ones for standard vehicles. Unless your car needs extra protection, an open trailer is a smart, budget-friendly choice that most drivers rely on every day.

HOW IT WORKS

How does Car Shipping from North Carolina Work?

Picturesque view of North Carolina

Shipping a car to or from North Carolina is a straightforward process with Sherpa Auto Transport. It starts with getting a free quote and booking your shipment. Once booked, a licensed carrier is assigned to your route. The driver picks up your vehicle — right from your door — and delivers it to your destination. Most auto transport routes to and from North Carolina take between 1 and 7 days, depending on the distance. Coast-to-coast shipments take longer, while regional moves are often completed in just a day or two.

North Carolina is a well-connected state for car shipping, with 78 cities served across our network. Whether you’re moving to Charlotte, Raleigh, or Asheville — or shipping out of the state entirely — carriers travel these routes regularly. That means faster pickup times and more competitive pricing. One thing to keep in mind: mountain regions in western North Carolina, like the Smoky Mountains area, may require open carriers to take alternate routes. This can slightly affect delivery windows. Overall, auto transport to and from North Carolina is reliable, efficient, and simple when you work with an experienced carrier like Sherpa.

INSIGHTS & REGULATIONS

NC Car Transport: State Insights and Regulations

Auto transport truck carrying vehicles

When planning car shipping to or from North Carolina, knowing the state’s vehicle rules helps avoid surprises. New residents must register their vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency [NCDMV]. You’ll need a North Carolina driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a passed vehicle inspection to complete registration [NCDMV]. Unlike many states, North Carolina requires both a safety inspection and an emissions test for vehicles in certain counties, primarily in the Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham metro areas [NCDEQ].

North Carolina law limits front side window tinting to 35% visible light transmission or more [NCDMV]. Lift kits and frame height modifications are also regulated — headlights cannot exceed 54 inches from the ground [NCGS 20-117]. When arranging auto transport to North Carolina’s mountain regions, consider that roads in areas like Asheville can see significant snow and ice in winter. Preparing your vehicle with all-season or winter tires is strongly recommended [NCDOT].

For insurance, North Carolina requires minimum liability coverage of 30/60/25 — meaning $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage [NCDOI]. North Carolina is also one of the few states using a contributory negligence standard, meaning any fault on your part can bar an insurance claim [NCDOI]. Factor these rules into your auto transport planning for a smooth transition.

College Car Shipping

College & University Car Shipping in North Carolina

North Carolina is home to major universities like UNC Chapel Hill, Duke, NC State, and Wake Forest, drawing thousands of students who benefit from having a car on campus. Before shipping, research your school’s parking permit requirements — most campuses restrict freshman vehicle access [University]. If you live on campus, consider off-campus storage facilities near your university during winter and summer breaks to avoid costly shipping back and forth. North Carolina requires vehicles to be registered and carry minimum liability insurance within 30 days of establishing residency [StateDMV]. Students moving to the Research Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) or Charlotte area will find having a car especially helpful, as public transit options can be limited outside city centers [NCDot].

Military Car Shipping

Military Car Shipping in North Carolina

North Carolina is home to several major military installations, including Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg), Camp Lejeune, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base [DoD]. If you’re PCSing to one of these bases, start your auto transport early — ideally 4–6 weeks in advance — as military relocation seasons (summer months) create high demand [MilitaryOneSource]. Use your Government Bill of Lading (GBL) or personally procured transport options to potentially offset shipping costs [DFAS]. Upon arrival, most installations require vehicles to be registered on-base within 72 hours, so have your proof of insurance, valid registration, and military ID ready [USArmy]. Door-to-door transport is especially convenient when navigating base access protocols.

Upfront guaranteed delivery. Great communication. Guaranteed pickup in 4 day pickup window. Here is why you should go with Sherpa. North Carolina Vehicle Transport FAQs

Preparing your vehicle for auto transport is simple. Follow these steps to ensure a smooth pickup and delivery in North Carolina:

  • Clean your car: Wash the exterior so it’s easier to spot and document any pre-existing scratches, dents, or dings.
  • Document existing damage: Take clear, time-stamped photos of all sides of your vehicle before the carrier arrives. This protects you if any disputes arise.
  • Remove personal items: Carriers are not insured to transport personal belongings inside the vehicle. Remove everything from the interior and trunk.
  • Keep the gas tank about a quarter full: Enough fuel is needed to load and unload the car, but a full tank adds unnecessary weight.
  • Disable any aftermarket alarms: An alarm that triggers during transport can cause delays and headaches for the driver.
  • Check for leaks and mechanical issues: Make sure your vehicle is in good working order. Inform your carrier of any issues ahead of time.
  • Retract or remove antennas and accessories: Fold in side mirrors and remove any external accessories that could be damaged or cause clearance issues on the carrier.
  • Note the tire pressure and battery charge: Your car needs to be driveable so it can be loaded and unloaded from the transport truck.

Yes — your vehicle is insured during transport. Every carrier in Sherpa Auto Transport’s network is required to carry cargo insurance, so your car is protected from the moment it’s loaded onto the truck until it’s delivered to you in North Carolina.

Here’s how the coverage works:

  • Carrier cargo insurance: All carriers we work with must meet minimum insurance requirements before joining our network. This coverage protects your vehicle against damage that occurs while it’s in the carrier’s care.
  • Sherpa’s added protection: For extra peace of mind, Sherpa also provides an additional layer of coverage on top of what the carrier carries.

Before your vehicle is picked up, we strongly recommend doing a thorough walk-around inspection and noting any pre-existing damage on the Bill of Lading — the official inspection report signed by both you and the driver. This document is your best protection if you ever need to file a claim.

For most shipments to or from North Carolina, we recommend booking at least 1–2 weeks in advance. This gives carriers enough time to plan their routes and helps ensure a smooth, on-time pickup.

That said, timing can vary based on a few key factors:

  • Peak seasons: Summer and the winter snowbird season are the busiest times for auto transport. During these periods, book 2–4 weeks ahead to lock in availability and avoid price spikes.
  • Your route: Popular routes — like Florida to North Carolina or the Northeast corridor — tend to fill up faster. Less common routes may need extra lead time to find a carrier.
  • Open vs. enclosed transport: Enclosed carriers are less common, so booking early is especially important if you need extra protection for a luxury or classic vehicle.

The earlier you book, the more options you have — and the better your chances of securing a great rate. With Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise®, the price you’re quoted is the price you pay, so there are no surprises at pickup.

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

When shipping your car to or from North Carolina, you’ll choose between two main transport methods: open and enclosed auto transport. Here’s what sets them apart:

Open Auto Transport is the most popular and budget-friendly option. Your vehicle is loaded onto an open-air carrier — the same kind you see hauling new cars on the highway. It’s safe, reliable, and used for the vast majority of everyday vehicle shipments. If you’re shipping a standard car, truck, or SUV, open transport is usually the right call.

Enclosed Auto Transport puts your vehicle inside a fully covered trailer, shielding it from weather, road debris, and dust. This option costs more — typically 30–40% higher than open transport — but it offers maximum protection. It’s the preferred choice for luxury cars, classic vehicles, exotics, or any vehicle with high sentimental or monetary value.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose open transport if you want the most affordable, widely available option for a standard vehicle.
  • Choose enclosed transport if your vehicle is high-value, rare, or you simply want extra peace of mind.

Yes! Sherpa Auto Transport offers door-to-door car shipping service throughout North Carolina — including major cities like Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, and Asheville, as well as smaller towns and suburbs.

Here’s how it works: instead of requiring you to drop off or pick up your vehicle at a terminal, we send a carrier directly to your specified pickup location and deliver it as close to your destination as possible. That could be your home, your workplace, or any other address you choose.

We say “as close as possible” because there are occasional exceptions. Large car carriers can have difficulty navigating narrow streets, low-hanging tree branches, or tight residential cul-de-sacs. In those cases, your driver will coordinate with you to find a nearby, accessible meeting point — such as a parking lot or main road — that works for both of you.

A few things to keep in mind about our door-to-door service:

  • Flexible scheduling: We work with you to find a pickup and delivery window that fits your timeline.
  • Price transparency: Thanks to our Price Lock Promise®, the quote you receive is the price you pay — no surprise fees at delivery.
  • Open or enclosed transport: Door-to-door service is available with both open and enclosed carriers. Not sure which is right for your vehicle? Check out our Open vs. Enclosed Car Shipping Guide.

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket.

While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.
