Factors that Affect Florida Shipping Prices
Distance
Longer distances naturally increase shipping costs. A cross-country transport from Florida to California will cost significantly more than a regional move within the Southeast.
Route
Major highways like I-95 and I-10 offer cheaper rates due to frequent carrier traffic. Remote or rural routes require special routing, increasing your price.
Season
Winter months see increased demand as snowbirds flock to Florida, driving up prices. Summer and spring typically offer better rates and availability.
Vehicle Type
Larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks take up more trailer space and burn more fuel during transport, resulting in higher shipping costs than sedans.
Traffic Patterns
Holiday periods and peak travel times create delays and higher demand. Booking during off-peak windows can save you money and reduce transit time.
Carrier Availability
During busy seasons, carriers book up quickly. You may face longer wait times or premium pricing if you need immediate pickup during peak periods.
Open vs Enclosed
Open-air trailers are the economical choice for most vehicles. Enclosed trailers provide weather protection and security but cost 40-60% more than open transport.
Population Density
Major Florida cities like Miami and Tampa offer competitive rates due to high carrier activity. Rural areas may require additional fees for pickup accessibility.
Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
Off Season Savings
Shipping during Florida’s off-season can significantly reduce costs. Even waiting a few weeks outside peak snowbird season makes a difference. Plan ahead to avoid busy winter months when demand and prices surge.
Flexible Pickup & Delivery
Offering a five-day pickup and delivery window gives carriers more scheduling flexibility. This reduces their operational costs, and those savings get passed directly to you through lower shipping rates.
Hub City Advantages
Choose pickup locations near major Florida highways like I-95, I-75, or I-4. Highway-accessible locations attract more carriers, creating competition that drives down rates while providing faster, more convenient service options.
Open Trailers
Open trailers cost less than enclosed transport for standard vehicles. Your car stays protected during transit and arrives safely. Save the enclosed option for luxury or classic cars needing extra protection.

How does Car Shipping from Florida Work?

Car shipping to and from Florida is a straightforward process with Sherpa Auto Transport. First, request a quote online or by phone. Once you book your auto transport service, we’ll assign a carrier and provide pickup details within 1-3 days. The driver will inspect your vehicle, load it safely, and transport it to your destination. Most Florida routes take 3-7 days depending on distance.
Florida presents unique considerations for car shipping. As one of the most popular auto transport destinations in the U.S., Florida connects to 116 cities through our network. Seasonal demand peaks during winter months when snowbirds relocate south, which can affect pricing and availability. Coastal humidity and salt air mean carriers take extra care protecting vehicles during transport.
The car shipping process involves four simple steps. First, get your instant quote and book online. Second, prepare your vehicle by removing personal items and documenting its condition. Third, meet the driver for vehicle inspection and loading. Finally, your car arrives at the destination where you’ll complete a final inspection. Our team coordinates every detail to ensure smooth auto transport from start to finish.
FL Car Transport: State Insights and Regulations

When shipping your vehicle to Florida, you’ll need to register it within 10 days of establishing residency or employment [Florida DMV]. The process requires proof of identity, vehicle title, and Florida auto insurance. Florida does not require emissions testing, making registration simpler than many states [Florida Department of Highway Safety]. However, window tinting laws are strict: front side windows must allow more than 28% light transmission, while rear windows can be darker [Florida Statutes 316.2953].
Florida’s insurance requirements include $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability, which differs from liability-only states [Florida DMV]. Before arranging auto transport to Florida, verify your insurance meets these minimums. The state has no vehicle safety inspections, but lift and frame height modifications have specific restrictions for street-legal vehicles [Florida Statutes].
When moving from Florida, consider that winter tires aren’t needed in-state but may be essential at your destination. Car shipping companies recommend scheduling transport during Florida’s dry season (November-April) to avoid hurricane-related delays. If relocating from colder climates, your vehicle won’t need winterization modifications for Florida’s subtropical climate. Always choose licensed auto transport carriers and confirm pickup timing aligns with your move-in date for seamless vehicle delivery.

Florida hosts over 400,000 college students across major university hubs including Gainesville (University of Florida), Tallahassee (Florida State University), Orlando (UCF), Tampa (USF), and Miami [Florida Department of Education]. When shipping your vehicle to campus, research parking permit costs and availability early—many universities have waitlists and charge $150-$400 annually for student permits [University]. Consider timing your auto transport 2-3 weeks before semester starts to ensure delivery aligns with move-in dates. For students living on-campus, explore nearby off-campus storage facilities for break periods when parking passes may expire [University]. First-year students should verify their school’s vehicle policies, as some institutions restrict freshman parking [University]. Coordinate with your auto transport provider about delivering to temporary housing if your permanent residence isn’t ready, ensuring a smooth transition to Florida campus life.
Military Car Shipping in Florida
Florida hosts several major military installations, including Eglin Air Force Base, MacDill Air Force Base, Naval Station Mayport, and Naval Air Station Pensacola [DoD]. When shipping your vehicle, coordinate delivery timing with your report date and temporary lodging arrangements. Military personnel can often receive discounted rates—ask your auto transport provider about military pricing [GSA]. Upon arrival, you’ll need to register your vehicle with the Florida DMV within 10 days of establishing residency and obtain base registration through your installation’s Vehicle Registration Office [Florida DMV]. Keep your PCS orders, vehicle title, and proof of insurance readily available for both processes [DoD].

Most Florida shipments move quickly due to high carrier traffic. Popular routes like Florida to New York or Florida to California typically stay on schedule.
Your driver will provide updates during transit. We recommend booking 1-2 weeks ahead to secure your preferred dates.
Yes, your vehicle is fully insured during transport. All carriers in the Sherpa Auto Transport network are required to carry cargo insurance that covers your vehicle while it’s being shipped.
For added peace of mind, Sherpa also provides supplemental insurance coverage on every shipment. This means your vehicle has multiple layers of protection throughout the entire transport process.
Before your shipment begins, you’ll receive documentation showing the insurance coverage details. We recommend reviewing this information and taking photos of your vehicle before transport for your records.
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
For most car shipments to or from Florida, we recommend booking 1-2 weeks in advance. This gives us enough time to find the best carrier and secure your preferred dates.
However, timing can vary based on the season:
- Peak seasons (May-September and snowbird season from October-November): Book 2-4 weeks ahead. Florida sees heavy demand during these times.
- Off-peak seasons: You may find availability with just a few days’ notice, though earlier booking still ensures better rates.
- Last-minute shipments: We can often accommodate rush orders, but expect higher costs and fewer carrier options.
The earlier you book, the more flexibility you’ll have with pricing and scheduling. Contact us as soon as you know your moving dates to get the best service.
The Price Lock Promise is Sherpa Auto Transport’s guarantee that the price you’re quoted is the price you’ll pay—no surprise fees or last-minute increases.
When you book with us, your rate is locked in. Many other car shipping companies quote a low price to get your business, then raise the cost before pickup. We don’t do that.
With our Price Lock Promise, you get full transparency and peace of mind. The quote you receive upfront is your final price, so you can budget with confidence.
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket.
While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.
